  1. I kinda liked this, as part of the brief run of almost-memorable movies starring young River Phee.
  2. That's funny. My thoughts were pretty close to your original.

And he puts up a walloping 1-8 in the Phillie series. I demand his cheek be swabbed to test for the presence of Timo DNA.
  4. No doubt a team can celebrate a player's success on behalf of his team and treat him like a dude on one hand while still keeping a hazing regime in place on the other. Not saying what's going on --- maybe nothing is --- but I expect players can be as fickle with their affections and appreciations as fans are.
  5. Light of Davis.
  6. Nice.
  7. I like analyzing problem players through the lens of Michael J. Fox vehicle-inspired threads. Takes the edge off. Next up: "Familia Ties"
  8. Marty strangely calls YSII YSI.
  9. Just listening to an interview with him, mostly low-cal stuff from one of Gil Sr.'s overgrown fanbois. Then the minor bombshell comes. During 1969, Gil Jr. was a college student and his Dad got permission for him to travel with the team, work out with them, dress for the games and sit in the dugout. Probably relatively common knowledge but I didn't know that despite the number of books I own (and some I've read, and one I helped write[!]) about 1969. He says he was drafted by the Cards and then went over to the Mets, but it must've been fast. because his bb-ref page only shows Mets stats. He seems to have done decent enough to continue past the two years he put in (his second year as bad as his first was good), but apparently he had been hurt. I seem to recall him getting in some terrible legal trouble, but that apparently was a grandson, also named Gil (not sure if he was Gil Jr.'s son), who killed a guy who was riding on his hood (joyriding?). The victim was apparently mobbed up. Howard Cosell told the story of Gil's funeral and having Gil Jr. in the back seat of his car and Jackie Robinson crying inconsolably.
  10. Best takeaway is the notion that Hef might have more to offer than we expected. Worst takeaway is that, as reality settles in with Buckaroo, we're realizing some limitations from the right side. After Wright, Buck, Byrd, Turner, and Cow, even when it works out, it feels like we're fakin' it. Recker? Not so much. Got to work Lagares in there more often than not, and if that don't work, go out and find some Mark Little or Brady Clark.
  11. Recker needs to get the Nickeas out of his stat line.
  12. Ah crap. My first Strat-O-Matic team was the 1978 Braves.
  13. Lefty Specialist wrote: 'Manny being Manny' only worked because he produced big-time. If you pull that crap without having the stats to back you up, you're just a jerk. I'm certainly not suggesting his situation with the team is going to "work."
  14. Everything affects a player, though: the number of people in the stands, whether his girlfriend is going at it with his mother online, the abuse or support of the fans, whether he's hitting well or slumping, or the high or low expectations of a team (which may or may not be symbolized by the player's position in the batting order). Psyches are real, and managing psyches is a big part of a manager's job, and managing Duda's strikes me as one of the more delicate parts of that job.
  15. While I've never heard the term "selfies," I approve. Yeah, I think that was him.
  16. It's Backfire City. When you're not moving a guy to protect his confidence, and it gets all over the media that you're not moving him to protect his confidence, it kind of messes with his confidence, so you might as well move him, to restore his confidence.
  17. This guy is the beautiful girlfriend who's absolutely crazy, isn't he? He's gonna make you sorry if you let him go (like Dykstra), and he's gonna make you sorry if you keep him (like Timo). He's gonna be too volatile to play infield (like Mora), but too inexperienced and unrefined to play outfield (like Samuel), leaving the latter the best option, but it'll suck a large chunk of the offensive value from him. So what do you do? I guess you can continue supersub him, playing him several times a week, but never giving him a particular assignment, giving him 425 PA and motivation enough to keep doing fantastic things like last night. After a year and a half of that, it'll come to a head, but either by then he'll have grown up a bit or the team will have milked enough production out of him to make a hard decision easier. I suspect that, if he becomes a starter --- and everything except his maturity level seems to suggest he should --- "Jordany being Jordany" will quickly become a staple of game reports. https://si0.twimg.com/profile_images/3498668338/6a16bd7a7fa677707c874411c167891f.jpeg>
  18. Cammy Maron engaged.
  19. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Definitely a Manuel move. Against Pittsburgh, I think. 20. I remember Chuck Tanner doing it against Wally Backman way back when with the winning run on third. It could have been a viable strategy against Wally at any time though.
  21. By the way, that pieface was more than a little violent.
  22. Frayed Knot wrote: I don't think English or Spanish speakers can understand him right now Something about hitting a homer making it easier to run the bases.
  23. It's a long time since I saw a five-man infield.
