  1. Only a few seconds, but that footage of Mays teaching the basket catch to Mazz was golden. Where's that from? The 1976 highlight film? Not so golden is the shot of Lee's shorts the day the got traded.
  2. And all that makes it a sobering day for Brian Bixler.
  3. That's brain thinking. Who else has something for me? Keep 'em coming. Think like GM. A creative GM.
  4. Mitchell looks like he's biting at the bottom of that pile.
  5. If reports suggesting that the Mets are ready to pay full freight on somebody are accurate, then who? Folks seem to be backing off of assumed price tags on Granderson and Choo. But if the team's going to bite the bullet, and Honus Wagner isn't out there, who do you make your check out to? Certainly an alternative to the free agent marketplace is the trade-and-sign option, or even trading for a guy already signed to a prohibitively large contact. But who?
  6. Meet the newest fringey Met. Don't bother trying to find a wife, fellas. He's single. And ladies, well, he's single. Go, Joel, go!!
  7. Well, Nick Evans has averaged about that many plate appearances per year, so...
  8. It's probably not about affording. The Mets are likely to go big on somebody. But do you really want it to be this guy?
  9. New NRI Met. Right handed Dominican swingman. Coming over from Toronto where he learned all the secrets of Metliness from Dickey and Reyes.
  10. The market may well come back from $90 million, though. It did with Bourn, and he ended up getting the 4/$48 million that's in the range of what we're talking about, and so far he hasn't been looking like a good buy. He also has a $12 million option on a fifth year, which vests with 550 plate appearances in 2016. I could live with tacking that on a Choo deal.
  11. Also seems to have a frame that looks like he'll be carrying x-tra weight going forward. It's a baseball-y frame, but not a frame that looks like he'll be an option for center in two or three years. Built like a thirdbaseman, in fact.
  12. Yeah, well, you know he's going to come in high.
  13. Any late bids on Choo? I was thinking four years and $50 million. I was starting to wonder about how much of a lowball that might be when I opened this thread and saw that I went four years and $48 million a month ago. I'm coming up!
  14. Frayed Knot: "Aoki is a betterleadoff man than Young. Ceetar: A wounded squirrel is better than Young. I just learned that Corey Hart's middle initial isn't "F." at all, but "C." His full name is "Jon Corey Hart."
  15. I might've agreed once. And then Duets happened. (Duets was actually watchably bad. I mean, there was music and stuff.)
  16. Frayed Knot wrote: I'm not sure how many SS days Peralta has ahead of him at this stage. His range was never the greatest to begin with and no one gets quicker as they get older and thicker (turns 32 early next season). Sometimes PED guys do. Just saying.
  17. Oh, yeah, I agree. I just figured that was assumed. I don't mean to say that the slugger awards can't and don't work to recognize one guy at each outfield position, but that they're not explicit about awarding one guy at each outfield position, and they perhaps should be, especially now that the Gold Glove Awards are distinguished as such.
  18. I'd kind of be disappointed NOT to see this script resurface as Go to Hell, Giancarlo Stanton and Go to Hell, Bryce Harper and Go to Hell, Travis D'Arnaud as the years pass, maybe finally seeing the light of day in 2037 as Go to Hell, Anesh Vanu.
  19. It's hard not to get a whiff of Jason Bay (minus the healthy legs). That's why I'm going with a similar package as smg58, but with more escapabliity.
  20. Ow. That really stings.
  21. Seems like he's been around forever, but he's only 31. He had surgery on both knees and missed all of last year, but he hit 30 homers the year before, and that means he's going to get big league money from somebody, but probably not so much so as to preclude additional bigger-ticket shopping by the Mets. He's a corner outfielder, which is what they need, but with that double knee surgery, he may be gravitating toward first faster than most, and you may have heard something about the Mets having a glut down there. Any curiosity here? What kind of number would you put on it? I'm thinking $5.5 million with a $12 million option for year two, and maybe a $2.5 million buyout on that option. Still though. I could get excited over Marlon Byrd. Hard to get worked up over Corey Hart. I don't care how the song goes, signing him feels like surrender. He's mostly stayed trim, which is good news for the knees, I guess.
  22. Yeah, Texas has youth and redundancy, and would certainly make an alluring trading partner.
  23. Hubie Brooks won it in with a half season in 1986, and it was the right choice.
  24. That didn't take long to revert back to the previous thingie. I wonder what makes a guy jump at a minor league offer so early in the process. I guess having an ERA that precludes a major league offer makes you happy to grab a deal that's offered you, but there were reportedly at least three teams interested in him. He was clearly a top target for a minor league deal. I guess a team's interest can dry up pretty quickly, and they few qualms about quickly moving on to the next targer when it comes to offering minor league contracts.
  25. Surprised they still do it with three outfielders at any position, rather than be more position-specific. I'm going to award Bud Norris the highly coveted AL Pitcher Silver Slugger Stealth Award. The National League DH Silver Slugger Stealth Award goes to Jordan Brown of the Marlins, I think. It was a rather pathetic performance, but he made 17 trips to the plate and got 5 RBI. But I"m not going to award that one.
