Braun certainly took it way too far, made it way too personal and hateful, but that doesn't mean he was wrong to fight it or to challenge the process or tester. That he's an asshole isn't really of concern to me, since I'm not hanging out with him. Really? You really have no idea? Because I really don't want to spend all day on this if you're just feigning confusion. You claim that everybody would and does behave as Braun did. I think that's plainly untrue.

"I truly believe in my heart, and I would bet my life that this substance never entered my body at any point." It's fine if players want to argue their case within the rules that apply to the crime...but they shouldn't then say shit like this that is blatently not true. That's all I'm saying. He got off on a technicality the first time, but that's not the same as being innocent. He proclaimed innocence before he got off on that technicality. Everyone claims they're innocent when they're not. I mean, the only other option was to go full-on "no comment" and it's not like that really would've been received differently. This is plainly untrue. There are, again, plenty of players that, once they failed a test, copped to their use, came clean, apologized, and took their punishment. I'm unsure why you would asset this. Braun didn't do this. He, in fact, bet his life, among other ridiculous and nasty and damaging things. This means not only does Trans Monk get to ridicule him, he can actually legally take Braun's life if he is of a mind to.
  3. Vic Sage wrote: Murphy's OPS+ is not 126... It's 105 for his career, and was 126 only in 2011 (when he missed 1/3 of a season), and then he put up a 103 (2012) and a 108 (2013) over a full seasons [and a 96 in 2009]. He'll be 29 at the start of next season, and will only be under team control for 2 arb years (2014-2015) before FAgency. I think you misread what I wrote. I don't state that his OPS+ is 126, but rather stated the numbers the last three seasons for each.
  4. MLB's reigning iron man, in fact.
  5. Well, more than a few people, once caught, came clean, apologized to their fans and the team, and took their medicine. He lied to his friends, fans, teammates, and fellow players, and actively solicited them to put their own honor on the line to defend him. He claimed an anti-semitic conspiracy, and threw innocent civilians under the bus, damaging their lives, reputations, and careers. So, when you ask what was he supposed to do, well, not that.
  6. It's kind of blowing it up to turn this into a Hall of Fame discussion, though.
  7. So, let's scratch that itch --- how much better is Ian Kinsler (105, 97, and 118 OPS+ the past three seasons) than Daniel Murphy (108, 103, 126)? How much more/less should the Mets have offered? Would you have blown 100% of your hard-won Metly financial flexibility on the bloated slugger's bloated contract?
  8. Fielder grounded out in the eighth inning of game six in his last trip to the plate as a Tiger, but I like to think of his belly flop in the sixth as his last Tiger statement. Somewhere, Ty Cobb's head exploded.
  9. metirish wrote: New York Mets ?@Mets 10m The #Mets have signed RHP Miguel Socolovich to a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League Spring Training. Clearly the Wilpons pandering here to Flushing's large Yugoslav-Venezuealan community.
  10. I think that's a lot of what's going on. When you get used and lied to by your big shot dad, it's understandable that you turn out aloof and untrusting.

So there will be some happy people. He had a rep for moving on from playoff losses disturbingly quickly with Milwaukee, didn't he? I think the guy's a trip. A little bit disturbed and detached and untrusting, though.
  12. There's some legitimate disagreement as to whether there is a moral element to the goal. Else, there's always the Yankees.
  13. The if-he-was-any-good-another-team-would-want-him-more logic applies to everybody. Somehow, though, the Mets do find players --- some of them good, some of them affordable, and some small amount both.
  14. Probably the hospital standard, but I hear ya. SOMEBODY'S ADDING SOME NEW PLAYERS!! LOL! #MEFUNNYHAHA
  15. It's not too big a jump to see Braun as a whole 'nother level of miscreant. And Monk has had a front row seat in Wisconsin for his sideshow of backstabbing and corruption. Explicit victims too.
  16. Got to be a sobering moment for Hawkins knowing that by signing that contract, it meant no more hugs from Anthony Recker. [fimg=600]http://us.rd.yahoo.com/sports/rss/mlb/SIG=12br2hfkf/*http%3A//media.zenfs.com/en_US/Sports/AP_MLB/201308170031019021277-p5.jpg[/fimg] For all intents and purposes, his life is effectively over.
  17. Lefty Specialist wrote: Well, if the Wilpons are looking for character guys, there's no one better than the guy who cost a UPS guy his job with his lying about taking steroids. 'No' is such a wholly inadequate word. Yeah, but that's the fun. Let it leak out that your wholly against douchebagels, depress the market on douchebagels, sign a bunch of douchebagels, declare that "Oh, I don't mean these douchebagels... these dbs are all redeemed!" Go to bank, cash championship check, give Satan a fist bump when you get back to your Lincoln Navigator." But yeah, Braun's the worst.
  18. Sorry to dig up this ol' thread and link to Deadspin, but the A-Rod hearing is happening and it's important and stuff.
  19. It would be fun if the Mets tried to buy low on the whole lot of them --- Cruz, Braun, Peralta, Melky, FMart (and how low is buying low on FMart?), and Everth Cabrera. Roids? HGH? That's all in the past! Character issues? We're operating a halfway house, here! We're the BiogeneMets! Bring your angle bracelet on up to CitiField and help rebuild your reputation as you help the Mets win the pennant. Don't worry, with Braun here, you'll never be the biggest d-bag in our clubhouse!
  20. So, when you talk about The Swimmer, you do talk about yourself. Or at least, your dad.
  21. Hot, greasy Marlins stars and what became of them upon arriving in Toronto: Josh Johnson: Went from throwing 191 innings with a 3.81 ERA to throwing 81 innigns with a 6.20 ERA. Strikeout rate actually went up, but hit rate increased dramatically, as did HR rate. Saw DL time for triceps soreness, forearm tightness, and ultimately bone spur surgery. Emilio Bonifacio: Played everywhere on the diamond, but lost 71 points from his OPS, before being dumped for cash to the Royals, where he instantly rebounded. John Buck: Flipped to the Mets in the Dickey deal, another muscling-up trade that went pear-shaped. Mark Buehrle: Added .39 runs to his ERA. Jos Reyes: Had pretty much the same season as last year, if certainly not the same season he had two years ago with the Mets that got him his big salary. The main problem is that it only lasted 93 games, following an ankle injury. That's an injury that certainly dampened his value as a baserunner/stealer and likely will continue to do so going forward. In addition, he suffered the indignity of hitting the disabled list to make way for Aaron Laffey, newly claimed from the Mets. The horror! Moreover, his salary is about to start getting silly.
  22. It's the absence of Jeter.
  23. MFS62 wrote: I'm getting a Robbie Alomar flashback, although Robbie was a little older when he came to the Mets. Later And Cano hasn't come to the Mets, and Alomar wasn't a free agent, and there was no dramatic coverage over the acquisition. It just happened one day. Any big ticket can be compared to any other big ticket that didn't work out. The only lesson you can take from that sort of thinking, though, is not to get up in the morning.
  24. The thing is, from the agents' point of view, they just drove up the Yankees' likely offer by a few mill just by spending a few hundred dollars on dinner. I wonder what makes for more snark: the Mets' management not actively moving to improve the team, or the Mets' management actively moving to improve the team?
  25. I think those guys should be put in a group house for a new hit reality series on SNY --- The Hardcores. A lot of folks seemed to be talking about Shea and how cheers reverberated there.
