  1. I don't think that's the bottom line.

Vic Sage wrote: High Spirits (1988) This comic fantasy features OToole as the lord of a haunted castle; the film is ruined by the presence of Steve Guttenberg (which is true of every film he was ever in). I'm telling you. One day, the world's going to see. Neil Jordan just doesn't have the stuff. Interestingly, one of O'Toole's recent credits is as the narrator of Eldorado --- a horror comedy also featuring Gutenberg and Darryl Hannah. Somebody in the world somewhere --- somebody with money --- decided a High Spirits reunion was what the world needed. One thing worth including was his voice acting for Ratatouille. Notable that his last three films all seem to be religious subjects.
  3. Wheeler.
  4. Daniel Murphy is at Dunkin Donuts 323 42 St. Come and have coffee with Daniel! I think Gee is there also. Get down there, folks. This is your Winterfest.

  6. Siskie actually walked off with the win.
  7. I like how the opening montage, presumably culled exclusively from 1983 Spring Training footage, opens with a shot of a Met (Bailor?) being thrown out at first. If that does't wet your whistle for what's to come, what will? Almost all the shots are from games against the Cardinals, and you'd think that they were all from the same game, but you see the Cardinals in home whites and road baby blues, and then you recall that pretty much every third game was against the Cardinals back then, as they shared a spring complex. Cool also how prescient the editor of that montage was, including shots of Keith Hernandez and Frank Howard, who weren't part of the story at the time, but soon would be huge parts. No Strawberry, however.

Yeah, the proof is in the pudding, and that sort of pudding is not the type the kids from the Pink Floyd record are going to eat happily. Hi, I'm Steve Leavitt, and when not inspiring over-produced mid-eighties singles by YES, I've beaten the bushes for Mets (though now with the Twins) looking for prospects. My territory typically has been Southern California and Hawaii, and MAN SAKES, the women. But you can't allow yourself to get distracted, because that moment is the difference between the signing CRAP or CARP, and while Jack Zdurienicik has landed you plenty of the former, I'm the guy who signed the latter. 9. OK, sure. If that's how you like to see me dressed in your head, go for it.
  10. 1972 Mets Jim Fregosi and Danny Frisella went to the same high school (Serra HS, San Mateo, CA), but Frisella was four years younger, so they were unlikely to have been teammates unless Frisella was an eighth-grade wunderkind.
  11. batmagadanleadoff wrote: How'd you find that pair? Wasted perfectly good time fooling around with some names until I found a match.
  12. Presumably teammates on the Norwood (MA) HS team (graduated within a year of each other), and teammates on the 1979 Mets. Probably some more such pairs if we're willing to do some digging.
  13. Well, don't get me wrong. By any measure I've come up with so far, the most likely outcome for the rotation as it now stands is a net loss of four wins. I'm foolish but not stupid.
  14. A lot of things have happened to suggest the trend lines of the past will deviate going forward. They always do. It's not a miracle when that happens. Yes, a lot will have to go right. It always has to be that way, more or less. The Mets' two championship teams were largely injury-free.

  18. No, that's not what I mean.
  19. I'm not on board with the idea that the team can't compete without Harvey. Heck, they spent a chunk of the season not winning with him on the mound, anyhow. You have five pitching slots to make up for what you lose from him. It's a challenge, but not impossible. In fact, it's the sort of adjustment teams make pretty regularly. The teams winniest year came in a season when a dominant Gooden fell back toward the pack. It's not what you want, but it's what you are trying to do anyhow --- get the team firing on all cylinders so you're not leaning on one guy.

  22. Lots of craziness and fun-ness transpiring at the winter meetings, unless your name is deGrom or Lagares. Life got a little more complicated for those two. For Brown, too, but he has the advantage of being out of options, so Lagares skates to the side for a bit while the Mets attempting to sort out the Davis-Duda conflict. Velasquez is a curious little bit of pilfery, as the Mets gobble him up a cold week after he got signed by Minnesota after a few years in the purgatory of indy ball. One can perhaps the Mets were scouting him there and were miffed at beaten to the draw by Minnesota and took note when they didn't add him to their AAA roster. Mets get the player, while Minnesota eats any signing bonus they might have given the guy. Hope the team ordered a whole bunch of small-cap D's for their jerseys because the clubhouse is going to be crazy with them, with a D', a DE, and a DEN all at once.
