  3. Dickey and Wright do come off as Gary Carterish, don't they?
  4. In honor of Jordany Valedespin, I've been curious about the Mets and pinch-hit homers? I bet you have too! That's why you won't have any problem answering these questions. 5. But re-reading, Rubin's story suggests there was some bus-throwing. http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/news/story?id=5547824 Even if it was only aimed at Perez and Castillo, by not explicitly naming them, nobody explcitly absolved Beltran. At least, not at the time.
  6. I figured his absence was noted because reporters were on the trip.
  7. Thought this was about disagreements over the knee injury. I don't remember the (very stupid) Walter Reed attacks originating with the Mets brass.
  8. I'm not particular on the type of talent I would get, just hope for equal or better value or hoping the team holds.
  9. Oh, I think the talent was (and is) there. Just not the discipline. They speak of makeup. Whatever it means, it don't mean him. Miami is exactly the place --- they'll play him enough for him to do something spectacular once a month but tolerate the lack of polish that would be counterproductive and demoralizing in a pennant race. Plus he'll be closer to his pharmacist. Suspended in the minors. Twice actually --- once with the Mets and once with a winter league club. Would love to eventually get those chapters added to his bio.
  10. Fulfills his photodestiny. Signs with Marlins. Sort of a perfect landing place for both parties. Minor league deal, tho.
  11. Yes they are all suspects. Ceetar wrote: No, I think saying they all are/were is as much of a washing of the hands as believing none are/were. It's unfortunately much harder than that. Maybe to you. It's not to me. Yes, you've applied the notion of relativism to many, many things. But there is a truth that exists beyond what is true to you and what is true to me. And that's what we mean to pursue in our discussions Put the guys in that performed to Hall of Fame levels on the field and stop worrying about if the special substances they took were legal, not legal, legal in baseball, or even helpful. It's certainly a valid argument, but there are other perspectives, and the actual criteria of the Hall of Fame challenge voters to take these other perspectives. Ceetar wrote: And if you want to play some sort of morality police... How patronizing. Ceetar wrote: ..., wait for actual freaking evidence of cheating the rules and regulations, not wild speculation or assumption. Wait. WAIT! YOU, a few posts up, without any concern for "freaking evidence," just declared all MLB players to be guilty.
  12. No, I think saying they all are/were is as much of a washing of the hands as believing none are/were. It's unfortunately much harder than that.
  13. Rumor Roundup wrote: Davis buoyed his value by posting a league-high .449 on-base percentage in 204 plate appearances after the All-Star break, and while that gaudy mark was fueled in part by a .351 BABIP, the Arizona State product also sliced his strikeout rate and padded his walk rate considerably. Both are promising signs for Davis, who slugged 32 home runs in 2012 but has been exploited by pitchers able to find holes in his swing. I disagree with that, unless "holes in his swing" means "he can't hit the breaking pitch under his knees." But that's a hole in most people's swing, and that's why it's a ball if you don't swing at it. The problem is that he chased continually in the first half and that was all anybody tended to throw him. In the second half, he came back with a new discipline, and laid off that crap. It was encouraging, but it remained to be seen what would happen when the pitchers adjusted. Would he be able to punish pitchers when they came back up to him? Would he fall back in the rut and start hacking at the low slider again when it became less common? It's a shame he got hurt.
  14. Even though there is zero evidence linking Piazza to performance enhancing drugs, there were writers who kept him off their ballot last year simply due to the fact that he played in the steroid era... I have hearsay and conjecture! And those are... kinds of evidence.
  15. Historically, it's more likely that a weaker candidate gets in because he tops a weaker ballot, than a stronger candidate gets left out (at least for a while) because he ended up on a stronger ballot. But the latter scenario sure seems to be coming up now.
  16. Wille McCovey? DH. Ralph Kiner? DH. Mel Ott? DH. Jimmy Foxx? DH. Rusty Staub? DH.
  17. Can there be any doubt that many of the most unimpeachably great baseball players --- Rushmorian figures like Ruth, Williams, and Aaron --- would have spent half their careers or more as DH's if the rules allowed for it? They might have objected (which Frank Thomas did, by the way [and maybe Edgar Martinez, for all I know]), but they would have been advised by their manager that he's in charge of the team, and they would have sat down and eaten sunflower seeds until it was their turn to bat. Because that's what the manager decided was in the best interest of the team. And being a good teammate is a Hall of Fame criterion too.
  18. May I mention that the game isn't over yet? Jay-Z was looking pretty bad for 24 hours after supposedly marching Cano's team out of talks with Seattle. The next day he had his 10th year. And heck, I applaud anybody who tells the Yankees that they don't have enough money to get him to play for them.
  19. You should know better than to stand between me and my Wendy's, Bucket. To his credit, I think he was slenderer as an Oriole. Or possibly, black is simply slimming.
  20. Hi, suckers. I'm Randy "Moose" Millgan. You may know me as a fringey, thick-in-the-middle firstbaseman of Met seasons past. But I stayed in the game as a scout, and between the Mets and my current organization of Baltimore, TheBaseballCube credits me with all of one (ONE!) signing. 21. Or they're big on tautologies. Kase homered on the Ike Davis tee-shirt thing. The Mets aren't giving you enough crap to throw your money after? Really? Go hang out with the 7-Line Army.
  22. If a guy is advocating for a "complete overhaul," and yet he's OK with the Mets standing pat at what currently appear to be their two most needing positions, then I think he needs to reconcile some things within himself before spilling any more electronic ink.
  23. It's also tiresomely old to anyone who's followed the game for even a single year. Go visit the factory where they make this stuff, Bitter Bill.
  24. They've certainly pared their payroll down to nothing. He would probably be taking home more than half of their payday expenses.
  25. Turned down seven years and $140 million from the Yankees before they went to Beltran. What do you think? Texas?
