  1. Yeah. The funny thing about blackballing Clemens and Bonds because it's just so easy to fill out a cromulent ballot without them. I have trouble seeing how you can include Bonds and Clemens while leaving McGwire off. But I guess they are still technically clean. No admissions and no convictions, but the public evidence against them on record is pretty clear.
  2. The thing is that most all of those are defensible. I mean, I'd bag Morris and Smith right out, but I wouldn't be embarrassed to vote for any of those others. But I've got no more votes than Ian O'Jeter does.
  3. Funny note in that report that Wheeler was sent down when Atchy was re-disabled. Who knew their fates were so linked?

That happens, and you still think your team is in a race, you make due with Recker and Teagarden (and Juan Centeno and Kai Gronauer), while you work the trade wires. If you're not in a race, well, you take advantage of that unfortunate time to give these guys their work. Buck may well be a waste of bucks. Don't sweat backup catchers. They're there for color, mostly. Anybody could get hurt. Wright goes down and it's Flores, Lutz, and Satin. Not much big league experience there. Can't solve all the problems at once. There are shortstops to be had.
  5. Ouch, you paid to see American President in a theater? I don't want to say you deserved it, but... .
  6. Ashie62 wrote: I don't believe this satisfies the need for an MLB backup for D'Arnaud.. Go fish.. The Red Sox backup catcher is David Wade Ross, who hit .216 / .298 / .382 // .681 last year, and is bald. The Braves backup catcher is Gerald Laird, who gets in drunken brawls at basketball games and stores spare bedding in his jowls. The Tigers backup catcher is Bryan Holaday, who wears number 50, has hit one big league homer in 22 career games, and wears number 50. He's not there to be the "MLB backup for D'Arnaud." He's there to be the reserve in Las Vegas. Don't sweat backup catching.

But trying to get something for him wouldn't be an issue if not for the Wilpon financial woes. Of course it would, and it certainly should be.
  8. And boy, you knew he was going to get injured, didn't you? Strained a groin during pre-game warmups, if I'm recalling rightly. Was re-activated (the second time) on the same day Wheeler got promoted. Must've looked like father and son on that plane. Old looking Mets who were nonetheless under 40: Scott Atchison Roy McMillan Tom Paciorek George Stone Harry Parker Kelly Shoppach Ed Kranepool, frankly, by the end
  9. Accomplished catch-and-throw guy with puncher's power. Good choice, I think.
  10. For San Francisco. He rejoined them at the top of 1969, I think, and eventually got a chance to manage them in 1974.
  11. Well, it's not like the teams would be paying full freight for Davis, so wouldn't be exploiting any superior budget. They'd simply be hoping to grab a castoff. And it's all speculative. This isn't predatory. Predatory would be teams signing away high-end Mets free agents the Mets like but cannot afford. This scenario, if it indeed comes to pass (and I'm dubious), involves teams not signing or acquiring a starting firstbaseman, but instead waiting until the dawn of the season, hoping for the Mets toss a highly questionable one aside. They are welcome to run their teams that way.
  12. I don't see where it makes much difference which teams are hoping to get him on the cheap, if that's in fact what's going on, which is pretty much a point of speculation at this juncture, so you may have been prematurely galled.
  13. Guaranteed if he's with the team past a certain date. Do we know what he's projected to make? More like $4 million, right? If he gets released, it's likely to be at the end of spring training, when his performance will have influenced the calculus in the decision.
  14. Looks like a completely different guy with that beard. OE: Linkie didn't work.
  15. Sandy, welcoming players to camp: Great to see you, Ike! How you feeling? Ike: I hate you and your ASS FACE! Sandy: Whoah, hey. Maybe we just step over here and talk. Ike: I can't believe... that just came out like that. I'm just... (HUGE heaving sobs.) (Sandy hugs Ike awkwardly. Nods over Davis's shoulder to Dykstra to get out on the field and start fielding grounders at first.)
  16. With 23.4% counted, Maddux is still at 100%. I'm guessing, on the other hand, that anybody who is perhaps turning in a blank (or otherwise miserly) ballot, will be less likely to publicize it this year, for fear of the blowback.
  17. Handsome #5 is Fred Wilpon. Homely #16 is [crossout:3b2ap2vf]Sandy Koufax[/crossout:3b2ap2vf] Bernie Madoff.
  18. Only MLBer to see combat in both World War II and Korea. That's something all by itself.
  19. Shouldn't really be anything awkward about it. Ruby can be weird about drama.
  20. I thought National Anthem Singer (or "NAS:") might similarly be a helpful boxscore addendum.
  21. Ceetar wrote: Is there a blog or site out there that tracks first pitches? It'd be an interesting stat to throw out there "Mets are 4-2 when Michael Almonte throws out the first pitch" or something. We had a thread once about stuff that should be included in boxscores. This was one.
  22. He went 36 2/3 innings in for Bingo with a 3.44 ERA, striking out 41 and walking 13. Then he went to Vegas and added 28 more innings with a 3.21 ERA, striking out 27 and walking another 13. That's got to be good for a spring training invite, right? Right?
  23. And we're all agreed. Something white happened, if indeed a minty white.
  24. Wow, flashback to the 1979 10-run inning. That seemed like about a third of a month's share of runs then. An inside-the-park homer by Doug Flynn in that inning. Talk about out-of-nowhere. First one at Shea since the sixties, I think.
  25. Could anybody do so much damage in a Mets career of three at-bats and two defensive innings as Mark Little did? One of my lousy Nationals Park games was Emil Brown paying tribute to Mark Little by taking a moment in an otherwise ephemeral career to do some real damage.
