  1. You're talking Tom Robinson. Gary, Keith, and Ron are not local radio broadcasters. The closest thing I can find on Rose is that he is "believed to have" signed a longer-term deal. And even if he did, his extended tenure places him in a position to receive security beyond the industry standard. I really don't think we need to frame circumstances as ominous for Lewin a week after he was re-signed. Oooh, they reportedly hired a pre-game/post-game host with play-by-play experience? Wouldn't most candidates come in with the same?
  2. Are multi-year contracts standard for local radio broadcasters?
  3. Screw Somers. I'm campaigning for Faith and Fear, on the Air.

"ScarJo"? Is this what the world has come to?
  6. Rubin says that a broadcasting source says that industry scuttlebutt says that WOR says that the new Mets pre-game and post-game host will be Andy Masur, presumably no relation to Bill Mazer. Masur is a Chicago-area native who had been calling games for the Padres for a number of years.
  7. Power it is. Hard to mentally place a black player on the Philadelphia Athletics, but there you have it.
  8. And the last active Philadelphia Athletic is... ?
  9. Was bullpen catcher for the Dodgers before that.
  10. Frayed Knot wrote: But is he (Franklin) gravitating away from SS because he lacks the skills for it or is it strictly because Seattle came up with a better option? I certainly haven't seen enough M's games to know. Nor I, but I have read REPORTS! And the reports I've read peg him as below average.
  11. Franklin's gravitating away from shortstop already. You look at pictures of him and he doesn't even look nimble. I think he projects more like a Wigginton --- enough bat that you want to get him in the lineup, but not so much that you can shrug off what he can't do on D. Wiggie can crack a lineup for 10 years but rarely on a good team. Maybe a more generous projection is Uggla. I can think of worse paybacks, but I imagine the team wants to wait a few weeks to see what they have in camp now, just like a few possible suitors for Ikas Duvis are waiting to get a look at the guys they have in camp.
  12. That's a great trade. No guarantee that Pedro becomes the Pedro he was with the Sox, but he sure looks like it. I needed an ace too. I cut a load of salary and was chasing after Tim Lincecum. He had me up to $33.5 per annum million over seven years before I said "this is crazy." I signed Josh Johnson instead for $22 million per over four. This game is an incredible time-waster. Yet, it might all be worth it for a 23-strikeout win-or-go-home playoff game. Were you managing? Did you have to leave him in with an "exhausted" label?
  13. That didn't happen. What season is that from? OE: The best part may be "Ground Outs - Fly Outs: P Martinez 3 -1." His fielders had to make four outs all day.
  14. Does anybody remember this he-said/she-said between Bobby Valentine and Cal Ripken from 1999? I do not.
  15. Yeah, if that training camp did him any good, he may be more or less as good an emergency option at shortstop as Turner was. Depends on whether his sore ankles we saw last September are going to be chronic thing or not.
  16. metsmarathon wrote: what you describe is an entirely different movie. a good one to make that i would love to see, but it's an entirely different animal. I don't think so. I think it would have been a film that honored the spirit they were trying to get across --- medium is the message and all --- while advancing the art of stop action.
  17. George Foster? That guy had a lot of helium. _Qa4FALuUew
  18. Big whoop. Helium's, like, the second most abundant element in the universe. Find me a prospect with a pocket full of thulium, then we're talkin'. #metsmarathonpost
  19. I like the ancillary effect that putting a young pitcher on tight restrictions can have --- forcing him to attack the strike zone. Hasn't really worked on Wheeler yet, though, has it?
  20. GENIUS! ME! GENIUS! Simmons should throw one or two percent of that deal to me. He never would have called his agent if not for me. Seriously, though, is there any sort of precedent for this? Locking up so many guys so early? I like it. Now I want to see Murphy and Gee and Parnell tied up. (Not literally).
  21. Maybe that's just David's Tidewater dialect coming through.
  22. "OK, guys, here's the strategy. We've got Koehler out there today, and he's pretty good. So what we're going to do is... keep the game utterly scoreless. Just... just do everything perfect until the 12th inning. By that time, I figure they'll be on their sixth pitcher, and we'll be able to grind something out. The way I see it, with two-outs, our .169 hitting catcher can slap a single up the middle, and at that point, we'll wave --- I'm looking at you here, Teufel --- we'll wave Duda home to score him from second." "It'll be the arm of Justin Ruggiano against the wheels of Lucas Duda. Just stick with that plan, fellas, and we can't lose. Take that, Seawolves."
  23. They went 8-11 vs. Miami last year. Certainly that can be upgraded to 12-6 or 13-6. But the world doesn't work that way all the time, does it? What's the key to beating teams with good pitching and lousy hitting? I would guess it's clean execution/good baserunning. Put yourself in the best position to get/make the one break that can be the difference in a low-scorer. Don't get Juan Pierre'd to death in 2014!
  24. The Braves are in extension mode, which I'm trying to interpret as a message to their core employees that we'll give you your security if you hunker down until the new stadium gets built. Last night brings us the news that manager Fredi Gonzalez and GM Frank Wren have been extended, and that comes on top of pre-arbitration lockup contracts being handed out to young building blocks like Julio Teheran, Jason Heyward, and Freddie Freeman. Andrelton Simmons, call your agent.
