  1. Wow. Good luck on finding that velocity in Norfolk, Slo-han.
  2. Well, that would depend on the nature of the trade or the nature of the signing, I think. Those are just names that a columnist is throwing around. Maybe, perhaps, it would be a trade-plus-extension. The Mets have had a noticeable dearth of Asdrubals in recent years.

  5. Rainy Lara.
  6. One subplot along the way is a group of young adults women from Russia competing as an ensemble. It's not stated but you get the idea that they fell into stepdancing because they couldn't cut it or didn't have/couldn't achieve the body type to make it as Russian ballerinas. Their coach files in from Ireland every few weeks and he's young and funny and enthusiastic, but what he keeps trying to get across to them is that they're solid mechanically, but their dancing is so utterly joyless. He tries all the teasing and charm he has, but you get the idea they can't project anything but how miserable it is to be a young woman in Russia these days.
  7. Hello, I'm... "Ewan Herndt." And you are...?
  8. Duke had a sweet role as VP of baseball ops with Baltimore. I think that was below the GM chair, but who knows who is ever in charge with the bloated Baltimore front office. Rick Peterson went on to become pitching coach with Milwaukee. He was let go with a year left on his contract, but that wasn't as much a reflection on him as it was a nu manager bringing in his own staff. He's now in the front office as director of pitching development with (you guessed it) Baltimore. With Willie and especially Jerry, I think they dug their own graves. But Willie is mostly a decent act with a love of the game, and I bet he gets at least an interim job eventually. He's kind of like Carter, though, in that he doesn't see the value in keeping his ambition under his hat, and guys like that end up as pawns in somebody else's big game.
  9. Heartbreaking to see a joyous art form reduced at it's pinnacle and supposedly highest expression to a joyless competition that leads to heartbreak for all but the very few. Also the trashy make-up-and-spray-tan culture that has sprung up around it can't not lead to Toddlers and Tiaras or Strictly Ballroom moments of how-did-it-come-to-this? head shaking. I did not know this, but somehow along the way, since (1) a commonly accepted defining trait of the idealized Irish lass is ringlets, and since (2) ringlet curls aren't so common as all that, and (3) keeping a girl with straight hair in curls is a pain in the ass and possibly damaging, literally every last one of the female competitors wear ridiculous wigs, no matter how lovely their natural locks are. The girl on the left above, for instance, seems like sweet and level-headed girl from Derry, Northern Ireland, but her costume makes her look like Marie Antoinette in drag. The one on the right, a New Yorker, seems to be in transition. She clearly started this dancing thing on a lark, but somewhere along the way, it changed to the most important thing, and then to the only thing, for her and her mother, who you can see transitioning from a decent person to a tiger mother/helicopter mother hybrid. Clearly, the child's future psyche is on the line at this tournament. The film, for better or for worse, isn't trying to necessarily lead you to the horrified conclusion I came to, but I might like a little history. When did the "Worlds" start becoming so global? When did the wigs first appear? When did they become de riguer? How much did participation spike after Riverdance? How much are the coaches getting paid and the families getting soaked? Are there any positive outcomes outside of a slot in a touring company of Riverdance or Lord of the Dance? I mean, how big is the professional world?

  12. The ironic thing is that Novak's career-defining role was as a woman who submitted herself to artificial transformation, and became a monster for it.
  13. I admire your faith that the pre-season blockbuster centered around Ike Davis for a shortstop is still coming.
  14. I had an oblique injury for the whole season, basically, Davis said. It would seem the disagreement lies in the ambiguity of this statement, or more specifically, the ambiguity in the word "basically". One could understand the statement as Davis saying he was hurt the whole season or, alternatively, as Davis saying he was hurt much of the season. I daresay Davis was hoping to float in that ambiguity. And Puma didn't exactly hang the guy out to dry, letting that quote speak for itself and buried at the bottom of his article. Anyhow, perhaps Davis has learned a lesson in being forthcoming and he's been scratched from the road trip due to a strained calf. Or perhaps he's been strained from the road trip due to a scratched calf.

  16. This will also speak to hitting metrics, as it will reveal more clearly whether a guy got that double because he walloped the ball at a trajectory and to a place where 83% of balls fall for doubles, or it benevolently fell in at a spot where and with such a force whereas only a mere 14% of balls are so lucky. I'd like to see the technology developed where this data can even be retroactively calculated based on available video. Come on, NASA, get with the program.
  17. I'd say there's nobody who can get a perfect swing on every pitch. Let's try not to judge broadly by every pitch starting on day one of spring training. The overall outcome today was benevolent. I'd take it every day, of course, but that too would be over-projecting. I agree that his problem is more reading horizontal movement, and therefore isn't as much with curves, as with sliders.
  18. I always thought that would have worked. And yeah, had they done it with Shea, they could have set prices crazy high.
  19. Love to see the Ike conflict, tearing us all apart.
  20. Is Eric Goedel's name pronounced with one of those invisible German R's, as heard in "The Goethels Bridge" or "Joseph Goebbels"?
  21. How many votes do voters get each round?
  22. Y'all kids and got nothing to be ashamed of. You re-tweet all you want.
  23. In a goofy contest flying around social media, that, if you're like me, you noticed but couldn't be bothered to care, David Wright has vanquished all pretenders and has been crowned The Face of MLB. Deadspin, with little evidence, but lots of rumor and innuendo, which are... types of evidence, is suggesting the victory was maybe rigged.
