  1. LA News writer seems to think Yasiel Puig is the worst person ever. He was late!
  2. The league felt so bad about how bad the expansion pool was for the Colts and Mets, they arranged a second mini-expansion draft following the 1963 season. Each of the other teams were to put four players into a pool, from which New York and Houston could select up to eight, paying the other team 30,000 a piece. It was, of course, another disastrous pool of talent, and if served anybody, it served the established teams by offering them a way to get 30,000 for their worst players. The future Astros made only one selection and the Mets two --- starting pitcher Fat Jack Fisher and west coast slugger Haas. Haas was hampered by the reality of batting outside of the desert and an inability to field. For a team in between Marv Throneberry and Dick Stuart, the latter issue was somehow a concern, so they farmed him out and found out quickly that his numbers in northeastern locations didn't reflect in any way those he put up in the southwest, and he never made the big squad. I think they really hoped he'd be the steal of the draft.
  3. That was pretty good. You refuted my point and made it sound like Alderson also. I applaud.
  4. I don't know that they have to be told anything. You want to see if you're the firstbaseman? Check the lineup card. If Duda gets the call three days in a row, Duda, Davis, the press, you, and me, will know Terry's made something of a commitment. When they ask if this means Duda is the 2014 firstbaseman, he can give one of those maddeingingly thoughtfully-engaging-but-empty Alderson answers. "You may see more Lucas going forward. That's a definite possibility. Things could shake out any number of ways depending on a lot of variables. Lucas starting there regularly... yes, I would say that's one of the more likely outcomes. One of several. But a lot things are unknown at this juncture and it behooves us all to be humble."
  5. It's not a question of what you are or are not entitled to do.
  6. They left out Panama. Woe to all the NL teams who miss out.
  7. There's a story about DeNiro zipping in to the set of The Fan by helicopter, doing his scenes, and zipping out. When he complimented John Kruk on his acting chops, Kruk supposedly responded with "How the fuck do you know? You're never here." That said, I think labeling these guys with generational supremacy only encourages that sort of thing.
  8. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Edgy MD wrote: Why make a decision at all? What new data suggests that anybody has won? Mix and match until somebody actually excels beyond the others. But you have to decide on how to mix and match. Sounds as though a decision has been made to give Doodoo a shot for a certain unspecified period of time. Sure, you have to make a decision. I just wouldn't go making such an announcement. Creates more drama if things swing in another direction.
  9. All the more reason not to designate Duda as your firstbasey guy.
  10. Why make a decision at all? What new data suggests that anybody has won? Mix and match until somebody actually excels beyond the others.
  11. It's a whole category unto itself --- Hollywood legends who never stopped working despite abysmal batting averages over the second half of their careers. Paul Newman DeNiro Woodsy Allen Francis Ford Coppola You know, Mary Shelly's Frankenstein is a perfectly decent film, but in it you can watch three careers clearing the shark at once in Coppala, DeNiro, and Brannagh. And Brannagh was too young to be doing no shark jumping. Flying toward legend status and then blammo, his career was going nowhere. He may be the latter day Orson Welles.
  12. 'tain't the bullpen. Terry's seat may not be particularly hot, but there's no harm in starting the watch early to measure temperature fluctuations as they wax and wane.
  13. Bingo pulls off a Metly performance, going up 1-0 in the first before ultimately going down big, 7-1. Unknown Starter was named Cody Anderson. St. Lucie hung in there for a 6-5 win. Gabriel Ynoa started and won, tiring in the sixth. Brandon Nimmo opens the season 2-3 with a double, a walk, and two runs scored. T.J. Rivera, a middle infielder to this point in his career, started at first and hit like it, going 3-4 with a homer and 5(!) RBI. Savannah in the bottom of the ninth losing 6-0, Mazzilli at the plate. Las Vegas just getting under way.
  14. Reports have Lucas Doo designated as the firstbasey guy.
  15. Washington Post writing about it too. Too bad nobody takes Francessa seriously enough for this to threaten his job. Too bad people look at his comments as representing a broad base rather than his need to fill air while knowing nothing.
  16. Reds were the start of Willie's 0-5 launch in 2005. Here's to them redeeming themselves by sparing us as deep an opening hole in 2014.
  17. Score runs, give relievers margins for error, and they will serve you. Young, first pitch swinging in the ninth, down six, should be made to walk home.
  18. It ain't the bullpen if we don't score but two runs a game.
  19. Let's chase this guy.
  20. Granderson: Day-game hitter.
  21. "Strikem Hout." Love that guy.
  22. "Bason Balz." I hate that guy.
  23. Wally Backman's Vegans are hosting with Rafael Montero facing The Unknown Starter. In the Eastern League, Pedro Lopez's B-Mets are sending Darin Gorski out to the mound to face that guy's younger brother The Mysterious Twirler. The St. Lucie Mets know how that game is played, so manager Ryan Ellis has Yet to Be Determined going for him as his team hosts the Palm Beach Cardinals and their moundsmith Mike Mayers. Finally, we head to the South Atlantic League, where Savannah manager Luis Rojas puts his hope behind Robert Gsellman, who did such solid work for the Cyclones last year. He'll be opposed by Lakewood BlueClaw and big league legacy Marc Leiter. Now I'm off to see what's happening in that Jailhouse Beatdown thread.
  24. Maybe "A Crap Do You Give?" should be a catch-all thread. Or a series! Or a blog! Or a hashtag! We've become such an entitled society that we feel entitled to be liberated from the effects of another man's entitlements.
  25. The ol' 7-2-3. Three reviews in that game, by the way.
