  1. I'm thinking that the team is 18-19, with help hopefully on the way, the concern shouldn't be about assigning blame at all, but about root-root-rooting for the home team. They aren't mutually exclusive. Maybe, but what a waste of energy and lack of perspective arguing over "WHO'S TO BLAME?!" --- treating a season as a blameworthy writeoff at 18-19. Can you pull it back in line? Can you salvage it in time? What can you do To save a party? Parcheesi?! Charades?! A spur-of-the-moment Scavenger hunt?! Or Queen of the Nile?! Terry hasn't even broken out the Parcheesi board yet.
  2. Sitting with Francessa is an assault on human dignity and I imagine that it is as true to say Mets figures have historically subjected themselves to it out of an obligation to their then-broadcast partner as it is to say that Mets figures now withhold themselves out of obligations to their current broadcast partner. That's the way Francessa's game is played and he's profited heavily from it. I haven't yet had enough of the Mets. I have LONG SINCE had enough of WFAN.

  4. Also Shecky Greene, Dana Delaney, Mark Mothersbaugh, Coolio, Michael McDonald, Gavin Friday, Wayland Flowers and Madame, Donald Sterling, and Shleprock.
  5. Sure he's been shakier. But he had a 5.35 ERA going into last night, and Mejia's was 5.06. Given that Mejia is expected to be around as the logjam of talent intensifies, and Colon is not, the decision seemed perfectly justifiable. Mejia lit the place up! In a good way! Yesterday, he was a pitcher struggling to find himself. Today he's a weapon!
  6. I can see Farnsworth taking Familia under his wing and giving him a swirlie. It's a shame he wasn't clean yesterday. You know the Yankees would be eyeing him this morning if he got the job done.
  7. That may well be the plan, and perhaps a good 'un. But he's the guy who is supposed to buy you time to make decisions most responsibly. And the reason he's in the rotation and not Mejia is that he's holding a spot for the best alternative to take it from him, and Mejia hasn't thus far shown that to be him.

You know the answer to that. $ If Mejia doesn't accept his new role he's done as a Met. I do feel that they should have given him the start in this series, but I thought it was crazy to sit EYj going into Colorado. So what do I know? I think it's more about innings than dollars. I think it's more about building the pitching staff the best way they know how than innings or dollars. Look, pretty soon, they'll have Colon, Niese, Gee, Wheeler, Mejia, Harvey, Hefner, Montero, deGrom, Syndergaard, and Matz (and other comers*, and the likes of merry wanderers like Matsuzaka and Torres) all fighting for spots in the same five-man rotation. Sooner or later, some of these guys --- like Familia before them --- were going to get transitioned to the pen. Mejia can still be a great asset there, and he can still get another crack at the rotation, but this is what honest competition looks like. And it could ultimately be glorious. * For at the center of them all shall be a man named RAINY LARA.
  9. Must've had a clue that Jake was about to drop the proposal bomb on Christmas morning, because she had her hair freshly done. He, of course, honored the occasion by wearing his favorite workout sweats.
  10. I never knew Bill Robinson was a Yankee. I have trouble seeing how Kingman and Mazzilli got on cards as Yankees, considering the brevity of their tenures.
  11. Now let's finish the Yankees of like the suckers they are and get our heads kicked in by the Marlins! YEAH!!
  12. Hard to think of a more fulfilling game to build on. 1. Taking a bitter rival. 2. On the road. 3. Packed house. 4. Starting a four-game series. 5. Successfully transitioning Mejia to the pen on a very positive note/positive performance. 6. Getting the offense going, and winning because of the bats, not despite them. 7. Coming from behind. 8. Twice. 9. The mopey rookie catcher, feeling heat from his backup, gets untracked. 10. The big-buckz free agent outfielder gets untracked. 11. Against his former team. 12. The outfield competition is rising all ships. 13. The goofy firstbaseman becomes a glove man. Even the downsides are ideal: 1. If you've got to pick a pitcher to get lit up, you pick Colon, the transitional piece. 2. If a closer is going to struggle, then let him still grind out the save, but further grease the skids toward a transition to an in-house solution. 3. Jeter's three hits and a walk produced no RBI, and no runs scored. The guy's had a career of empty calories and there it is in a microcosm.
  13. Meet the newest future Mrs. Met. Stacey Harris, with her hub-to-be, Jake deGrom! They like hiking! They got engaged at Christmas!
  14. Rainy is in Bingo, and a solid part of a solid rotation (Tyler Pill excepted), going 3-1 in six starts and 33 2/3 innings so far. He uploaded his strikeout software last start, fanning seven in 6 2/3 innings versus the Harrisburg Senators. Rainy is on track.
  15. Harvey debuts on the road in Arizona. Wheeler gets to touch down in game two of an Atlanta double header. This guy gets to crash land into the Subway series. #racistMets
  16. Expect some word-lengthy Megdal pieces real soon. Thank you, but... really, I'm full.
  17. Could mean Germen sent down, or somebody elbus shipped out.
  18. I know, right? Mike Schmidt, working for the Times!
  19. I'd also add... without a float of dough from the bank or a float of goodwill from the fans. Expansion teams don't start business with loans being called in and fan revolts under way.
  20. It's that sort of attention to detail that had led to a never-before-seen level of combined anger, distrust, frustration and dismay directed collectively at the Yankee organization by its fans.
  21. It was more than clear that this philosophy was built to instill in the minor league players, and reinforced with bonuses. You're not even allowed to tie bonuses to performance under big league contracts. And clearly Granderson, at least, would be motivated to succeed on any terms he can, because he's already secured his payday for the upcoming seasons.
  22. Monday, May 27, 2013 NYM 2 NYY 1 W: Lyon L: Robertson S: Parnell HR: Wright Boxscore Niese went 2-2 off Yankee starter Phil Hughes. Tuesday, May 28, 2013 NYM 2 NYY 1 W: Rice L: Rivera Boxscore Harvey started and struck out 10 in eight innings in this one. Ike Davis debuted in his new career as an eighth-place hitter. Wednesday, May 29 NYM 9 NYY 4 W: Hefner L: Phelps HR: Byrd, Boesch Boxscore Mets came out with five runs in the top of the first and there was no looking back. Thursday, May 30, 2013 NYM 3 NYY 1 W: Gee L: Nuno S: Parnell HR: Byrd, Cano Boxscore Dillon Gee, starting his run of success that continues to this day, was at his best, striking out 12 (and that's 12 YANKEES, which is always a delight), walking ZERO, and giving up one run on four hits, in 7 1/3 innings. It was enough to make any true New Yorker Met fan grow an inch or two. My heart, in fact, grew three sizes on that day. And then the team went out and got swept BADLY by the Marlins: 5-1, 8-1, and 11-6. Blurgh.
  23. I'm kinda hoping Yankee fans raining crosstown boos down upon #3 gets him going.
  24. Black got all crazy wild last night. Tacoma Top of the 8th Pitching Change: Buddy Carlyle replaces Jeff Walters. Ty Kelly walks. Jabari Blash lines into an unassisted double play, first baseman Allan Dykstra. Ty Kelly doubled off 1st. Pitching Change: Vic Black replaces Buddy Carlyle. Jesus Sucre walks. Leury Bonilla walks. Jesus Sucre to 2nd. With Endy Chavez (ENDY!) batting, wild pitch by Vic Black, Jesus Sucre to 3rd. Leury Bonilla to 2nd. Endy Chavez strikes out swinging. Phew, right?! That's a dramatic third of an inning. Presumably he heads to the bench and gets coached: "Just bear down and throw strikes. Trust your stuff." Tacoma Top of the 9th Xavier Avery walks. Chris Taylor grounds into a double play, shortstop Rylan Sandoval to second baseman Daniel Muno to first baseman Allan Dykstra. Xavier Avery out at 2nd. Nick Franklin singles on a line drive to right fielder Cesar Puello. With Jesus Montero batting, Nick Franklin steals (6) 2nd base. Jesus Montero doubles (7) on a line drive to right fielder Cesar Puello. Nick Franklin scores. Ty Kelly flies out to center fielder Matt den Dekker. So, oddly enough, it wasn't until he threw strikes that he coughed it up. All those guys who were walked either left stranded or erased by double play. Not a sustainable model, though, one imagines.
