  1. Yeah, maybe it's IGTs this team is missing. Jean Segura can't hurt us, because we KNOW HIM TOO WELL.
  2. Sure hope so. Team was wearing the real uniform, too. No bullshit, there.
  3. Never heard of "Irving Falu"? Sounds Jewish-Tonganese. Mets just won a homecoming day in I-don't-know-how-long. I was starting to think God hated "Taking Care of Business."
  4. Did Mejia crop his hair or is just relaxing it with a notion?
  5. Murphy has homered in every game following a visit to the White House.
  6. Paul Lo Duca could have hit that grand slam farther lefthanded.
  7. I find it amazing that his half apology invoked bringing back the Oriole Way. If there ever truly was such a thing, it's been gone since well before he was born.
  8. Raising a soft drink in the hope that he died sober.
  9. An old SI account of Welch becoming one of the first players to seek treatment for alcoholism during his career.
  10. Makes my long-assed list of pitchers who were every bit as accomplished as Jack Morris, or better, who got little or nothing with regard to Hall of Fame consideration.
  11. Bob Welch, Dodger champ and the last guy to win as many as 27 games with the 1990 A's, passes away at 57 (10 years younger than the rock star Bob Welch was). Cause of death not yet announced. The 1990 Cy Young Award was a hotly contested subject among my friends and me, but 27 is a big number.
  12. Appealing his five-game suspension. Appeals board should review the tapes and decide to change the suspension to 10. Of course, Jordany is somewhere asking, "Throw the bat at the thirdbaseman... why didn't I think of that?"
  13. I thought thems was some pretty interesting findings. The Mets are getting fewer hits/line drive than all but two teams.
  14. Sure but it's not like it's the Mets' policy alone to announce tickets sold over turnstile clicks. The point remains that Ashie's contention that, should sales plummet following a discouraging personnel move, it won't matter because the team sells so few tickets now as it is, doesn't really hold. Plenty of room remains for sales to decline and decline further. And as bad as this last week was, sales have trended up slightly this season. No thanks to me, of course.
  15. Well, by all means, take the day off from work and watch The Court Jester. I remember seeing footage of Kaye entertaining destitute European children during the post-war relief period, doing the mock-European accents that he (and Sid Ceaser) did so well. I don't know how well such humor would go over today, but you must pretty damn funny to make kids crack up by talking a jibberish version of their own language to demonstrate what it sounds like to you. Pretty funny how many of his performances were of the dual role/milquetoast-bully variety.
  16. Ceetar wrote: where can I get that blanket to add to my registry? Your best maybe is just knocking on Mrs. Murphy's door and asking nicely, I would think, but good luck after that.
  17. [fimg=500:2880jn7y]http://www.100percentauthentic.com/pics/50768_02_lg.jpg[/fimg:2880jn7y]
  18. Needs a Mets diaper bag.
  19. The worst-drawing teams now would be near the top draws of 1977.
  20. Interesting that he blew his marriage up not over some gimlet-eyed climbing starlet, but over somebody funny.
  21. John Lannan finally reports to Vegas after getting sent down seven weeks ago, but kept on reserve after clearing waivers, while he attended to family issues. There's a lefty.
  22. There we go. Wonder how much more rope Rice gets.
  23. Was Sylvia Fine related to Larry?
  24. That's a shame. I'm having trouble seeing Eveland fitting in.
  25. I submit that this is, to an extent, measurable. Compare line drive rates to batting average. The teams with lower ratios are (in theory, anyhow) enjoying more luck. Teams with higher ratios, one might conclude, are hitting the ball hard and nonetheless making outs. (The Mets do have two of the top ten batters in MLB in terms of line drive percentage.) #TeamLD%BALD%/BA1Blue Jays.175.261.6702Rockies.198.284.6973Royals.182.252.7224Orioles.193.267.7235Marlins.195.261.7476Angels.195.256.7627Nationals.194.251.7738Rangers.206.266.7749Athletics.196.252.77810Giants.194.248.78211Diamondbacks.204.259.78812Padres.173.218.79413Pirates.201.252.79814Rays.195.243.80215Astros.193.238.81116Mariners.196.239.82017Dodgers.208.253.82218White Sox.210.255.82419Indians.212.257.82520Brewers.214.257.83321Yankees.211.253.83422Red Sox.206.247.83423Tigers.228.271.84124Braves.204.241.84625Cardinals.215.252.85326Twins.212.245.86527Reds.206.237.86928Mets.212.235.90229Phillies.218.241.90530Cubs.212.233.910 I didn't know what I'd find when I went into the data. I'd hesitate to make too much of this outcome or call it conclusive. (What of strikeouts? What of walks? What of weak-assed line drives?) But it sure supports the luck-hasn't been-on-our-side notion.
