  1. Wow, that green light for Young is almost ballsier than the squeeze call would've been.
  2. Now is a good time for a bunt. I like squeezies. But man, the 2014 51s are having a nice inning.
  3. Bunting, bunting, bunting...
  4. Little d's all over the ballpark!
  5. I can't see any reason they wouldn't if it was the move they wanted.
  6. d'Kong76 wrote: Who is unabashed Duan? I'm confused. You don't remember duan? Our erstwhile poster from Dublin? Footballer? Rock journalist?
  7. Well, stinking out of a gift opportunity is no fun. Please don't retaliate.
  8. The Nats are getting weird. Radio booth sees intent in that HbP.
  9. Now we might have scored if Eric Young was on second there.
  10. Tempted to pinch run for Duda here, but it's too early. On the other hand, the only run has come on his wheels.
  11. I was taking my toilet. Was there anything particularly dicky about Harper's sac fly?
  12. Well, it's nearly unthinkable, but Duan was unabashed about suggesting that the way to crown the truly best team is to bag the post-season altogether. The team with the best record is your champ.
  13. Well, I guess Wright was correct about Franzen sucking, just correct at the wrong time.
  14. He was initially replaced by a combination of Bobby Valentine and Joel Youngblood. If the Mets had a late inning lead, they'd send Foli in at shortstop and slide Flynn --- a good shortstop but a great secondbaseman --- over to the keystone to finish the game. Torre grew unhappy with the defense he was getting from Valenblood (Valentine's range was pretty narrow at this point, and Youngblood was undisciplined), so by the end of the season, Flynnie was his fulltime secondsacker. The Mets wouldn't be getting any offense from second again until 1984. Millan would resurface again with the Taiyo Whales, and become somewhat famous in Japan for being the first westerner to attend the famously martial and exhausting winter camp that Japanese players endure.
  15. I guess we have to buy the damn book. A vicious assault shut the door on his MLB life and we get two paragraphs?
  16. Werner: From the very inner-circle of the Friends of Bill.
  17. The shortest name in big league history shortens (ends actually) the Cat's last MLB life. Ott fined $250.
  18. An Anthony Recker cameo!
  19. Sheesh, I'd like two of them.
  20. Javier Vazquez officially retired this season when he went to work this season an international special assistant to Major League Baseball Players Association executive director Tony Clark. Can't yet find a statement of surrender from Miguel Batista. Wouldn't be surprised to find him in the Venezuelan winter league this year pitching himself into shape. This is going to come down to Bartolo vs. Endy, I think. 19 =#BFBF00][crossout]Vladimir Guerrero[/crossout], of 39 years, 21 days old. Final Game: 9/28/2011. 21. Charlie Lea was a good pitcher. Plus it was cool that a team could relieve Lea with Lee. He went 16-11/3.12 in 1983 and then was the All-Star starter, going 13-4 by mid-season in 1984, but injuries and lack of offensive support undermined his second half. He finished at 15-10, missed the next two seasons, and was never good again. Schatzeder was a good guess, temporarily. Definitely from the era of their superstar outfield. OE: Homerun by batmagadanleadoff! Look at that fucking hair. If that guy doesn't drive a primer-painted pickup truck without his shirt on around Babylon and surf at Jones Beach, I don't know what. That motherfucker isn't just a 20-game winner. He's your go-to source for WBAB bumper stickers.
  22. Yeah, I included Dead Again and Munchausen on a secondary list, but these Cranepoolers, they cheat. They cheat like hell. Sheesh, nobody's even touched on Jakob the Liar. It's like it doesn't exist. I haven't seen it, but it seems like just the most lost decision-making process ever. > Robin, I know this is big, but only you can do it. It's a film about finding our humanity... in the midst of the Holocaust. >>> What do you mean only I can do it? Roberto Begnini just did it, and it won a pile of awards. > But this will be... KINDA different... and... >>> And The Pianist. They gave an Oscar to Roman Fucking Polanski! > So, you'll be, like... the third in four years to... you know... go there! >>> What kind of money are we talking?
  23. Well, because he stated less than a third of his appearances as an Expo. Hard to win 20 that way. His top win season in the big O was during the first of his two tenures, going 10-5 (in 21 starts) in 1979 with a 2.83 ERA. That was good enough to get him traded to Detroit (straight up for Ron LeFlore!), but he floundered in the AL and was mostly a reliever by the time he returned to Canada in 1982. And yes, I had forgotten Schatzeder ever played for the Mets.
  24. A country day school and Julliard guy, he seemed ever-rooted in the humanities and gravitated toward humanist roles --- philosophers, psychiatrists, professors, musicians. Almost all of his characters could pull a Plato or Shakespeare quote out of his ass, and then ground it from seeming too high-faluting by coming up with a sophomoric retort on top of it. (A lot like seventies Woody Allen in that last regard.) was an anthropologist/philosopher. With his broad hairy chest and his mental quickness sharpened to go right back at somebody, he often played brawlers, righteous ones --- the dockside avenger in Popeye, the suburban avenger in Garp, the firefighter burned out by urban decay and dysfunction and bullshit in Club Paradise, the pub-brawler in Good Morning Vietnam. Even in Good Will Hunting, his genial mood suddenly turns as he throws a kid half his age and well built up against a wall and threatens to kill him for ungentlemanly comments about his wife, and the kid (and the audience) believes him. Always willing to throw down in defense of the exploited little guy, but it's notable that he never played a lawman or a soldier (except as far as you can call Adrian Tarnauer a soldier). He'd do bits as John Wayne or a type A football coach, but I imagine he couldn't find any depth beyound the surface joke playing a guy who took on violence or enforcement as a liftestyle.
