  2. Most of the bad ones weren't as bad as all that.
  3. Mets announcing that deGrom won't make his final start.
  4. Wimps.
  5. Mets planning to address the media this afternoon to announce the Alderstension. Notable in that (1) it seems Sandy usually prefers to face the media in less formal settings than a podium at a press conference, and (2) unless somebody else represents ownership (Bill Maher?), it'll be Jeff's first face time since the harassment/wrongful termination lawsuit broke.
  6. Even with a 9-0 win, the Yankees still won't even their RS/RA ratio.
  7. I thought Jeter jumped the shark with the Gatorade commercial. And I, 18 years earlier. Someday, somebody is going to explain to me how "I did it my way" is, in itself, virtuous.
  8. Yeah, that midnight blue sky in the lower lefthand sample gave the whole thing a life and depth that stood out for me among all the excellent samples, even if that meant keeping the buildings greyscale for contrast. The buildings are also more distinct from one another in that rendering.
  9. I seem to recall some folks sweating over the notion that he's only played one post-elimination home game in his MLB career. And folks were sweating whether the team would stay alive until Thursday. Sadly they miss what's going on, and that's him dragging them down to the bitter end. I mean, if the team is still alive, do they have the farcical substitution ritual, where the gets pulled in the seventh? Or he gets pinch-run for after a flare single in the bottom of the sixth? Or being alive, do they play to "win" (and by keeping him in, that means pretending to play to win), and therefore risk the chance that his final at-bat could be grounding into a game-ending double play with the tying run on second.
  10. What architectural conundrum led to the jagged teeth that are sections 108 and 127?
  11. A 10th win would sure help to push the voters over any psychological hump. You know what else would help? This gif of deGrom's slider.
  12. I'm excited by that field layout that allows for 175-foot homers down the right field line.
  13. It strikes me that (1) this is Atlanta's first serious in-season brain change since 19-fuckin'-90, when they fired Russ Nixon mid-stream and re-hired Bobby Cox. John Schuerholz took over as GM that season as well, and like Cox, held the seat until his retirement, which was a smoothly orchestrated transition, rather than an overthrow, just like Gonzalez replacing Cox (2) The Mets jumping in and nailing down Sandy Alderson may have been somehow in response to the suddenly open seat in Atlanta. Pure speculation, of course, but it'll be interesting as well to see if any of Sandy's deputies get an interview.
  14. Nothing yet. It's unofficial at this point. Presumably, it'll come out in a post-season press conference. It's technically not so much a three-year extension, so much as picking up a pre-existing option and then adding an extra deuce. I had thought I recalled Alderson said earlier in the season that he was interested in GM-ing the Mets for two more years. Maybe he meant two more years beyond his current contract, which in his mind included the option. Or maybe he wants a little more security now that he's not going to get the commissioner job.
  15. And just like that. Pittsburgh beats Atlanta and the Mets spend their off-day climbing into second place.
  16. Jon Heyman is reporting a three-year extension for Alderson, which is a year more than I was expecting, but OK.
  17. Loving the aura around the skyline in the blue night in the bottom left version. Hard not to love the cityscape reflected in the water as well, much as I doubt represents a phenomenon that's ever been experienced ever in New York City ever.
  18. The guy has been in the system for eight years, with Collins for five. Presumably he's instructed a batter or two in that time.
  19. If nothing else, it would mean a more skilled infielder to coach the infielders than Teuf or (probably Terry) ever was. Not that having skills means you can teach skills.
  20. I don't mean to suggest otherwise.
  21. Adam Rubin reporting that (1) Terry Collins is likely to stick around; (2) Wally Backman will return the big league staff as the new third-base coach; and (3) Tim Teufel will transfer off the base lines and become the batting instructor. Ken Rosenthal reporting that (4) the Mets are working on an extension with Sandy Alderson. Edgy MD reporting that (5) this all sucks if your name is Lamar Johnson.
  22. Having trouble seeing what the point of firing Wren is, considering they made a big commitment under him to lock up all these guys with one-three years of experience, I'd've guessed that they were committed to seeing the plan unfold over several years. I mean, yeah, they've had a terrible September. Three lousy weeks. That should at worst get the hitting coach fired. And fire whoever taught BJ Upton to throw, but come on. I figured Wren would at least be around until Jonathan Schuerholz was ready for the job.
  23. The backlash has been tremendous. Even so, folks in my FB feed drooling over the commercial insist there has never been anything bad said or written about the guy. Quel?!
  24. Maybe we need to sign a side deal with Darren. Produce our designs under the protection of his license. I'm sure our Lee Mazzilli's Head Rolls design would be his best seller.
  25. I'm saying. Someday, like using midgets and albinos as flunky mascots, or using slurs for nicknames, this is going to be seen as a weird and demeaning anachronism, and it's not like the novelty has any humor value left at this point. It'd be a healthy thing if management took the senior players aside and quietly told them to let this die next season. If everybody is going to jump ship eventually, why not be the first? I'm sure they'll find another way to ride the rookies besides public emasculation.
