  1. Bid farewell to 1955 Dodger George Shuba, who accidentally made a giant leap forward in civil rights merely by shaking a black dude's hand. Such was the messed-up state of baseball and culture in 1946.
  2. Would be an interesting turn of events if the guy Dave Hudgens brought into the organization turns out to be his eventual replacement. On another note, when tracing links between generations, it'll someday be very interesting that Dilson Herrera once played with Bobby Abreu.
  3. How about that? Does Terry have enough juice to get an inexperienced guy appointed as his hitting coach?
  4. Tim Teufel. Choco Taco. The Danube. Alice B. Toklas.
  5. I'm not sure any would. It strikes me as fool's gold to think they are. Even one who pushed all the right buttons in one organization could be dead wrong in another. That's why I think, if you're OK with the bird in the hand, trust that.
  6. Yeah, you fire Terry because you've lost faith in Terry, not because there's suddenly a big difference-maker floating around.
  7. SquadronPyth WPyth LPyth Win %Pyth GBWashington9864.604---Mets8280.50916Atlanta7884.47920Miami7785.47821Philadelphia7389.44825 Terry speaks of needing to get 10 or 12 games better. The good news might be that some of that could (could) happen just by standing still. The bad news is that getting 16 games better is probably a better target.
  8. If the first tiebreaker was division record, Atlanta would win, with a 40-36, vs. the Mets 38-38. They also have the better intra-league record. Mets as noted, have the head-to-head edge and the better run differential.
  9. He should have at least asked Terry how he feels about Japan Women's Soccer.
  10. Gardenfired. One of only two men to hold that job since 1987.
  11. That's a good Rich Becker post.
  12. An interesting wrinkle its the trend lines the last few seasons are taking him in two different directions. Splits by Season 2014 OPS vs RH: .915 OPS vs. LH: .516 Difference: .399 2013 OPS vs RH: .831 OPS vs. LH: .610 Difference: .221 2012 OPS vs RH: .745 OPS vs. LH: .662 Difference: .083 2011 OPS vs RH: .886 OPS vs. LH: .715 Difference: .171
  13. Yeah, but, an alternative is the semi-platoon, as noted above, where he gets perhaps every-other lefty starter. That could allow for a best-of-both-worlds scenario, where he gets time enough to improve, without enough time to sink the ship. A .516 OPS is enough to get a Gold Glove shortstop benched.
  14. It's great that Duda won the penultimate game with a KABOOM against a southpaw, and greater still that he hit power markers like 30 homers and 90 RBI, but his breakthrough season still leaves the team somewhere close to where they were at first two seasons ago, with a guy who made a mark with a strong second half, but hasn't been able to handle the lefties. And while he's not the fielder that Davis was, he's OK, and far more confident and competent than he ever would have been in the outfield, and he's healthier than Davis and blahblahblah. The Davis ship has has sailed and he's the dude. But... what to do about those splits? SplitPABAOBPSLGOPSvs RHP471.273.372.543.915vs LHP125.180.264.252.516Overall596.253.349.481.830 Do you keep sending him out there and figure he'll get it? Do you alternate him and Campbell against lefties? Do you give Soupy all the lefties? Do you bring in another alternative non-Soup dish to serve against lefties?
  15. Sure. Of course, it helps to get your first job at the top of the field. But I imagine such opportunities are still quite rare. Rubin reports that he has expressed interest in being a batting coach, though not right away. Best to him, certainly. He's also planning on playing in Venezuela this winter.
  16. Steve's friend sounds like a real picnic in pants.
  17. #WhyThisKindOfSocialMediaMarketingBlows Not just sports franchises. Twitter: where unfunny people get a mic and a spotlight.
  18. Well, if his teaching is as clear as his post-game interview this afternoon, whoever hires him is screwed. But you know how this coaching game goes. You start out grinding your shit out in the minors. And very few guys who made the big falafel want to spend their next life back on the bus circuit. And Bobby made the big falafel.
  19. Drop to a knee, EY.
