  1. Yeah, Akeel is a candidate. Nothing above Savannah, but...
  2. So, pretending (1) there'll be no trades between now and the Rule 5 draft, and (2) Jeremy Hefner is somehow indeed off the roster and protected. That essentially leaves 42 guys on the roster, which trims to 41 with the retirement of Abreu. The team can shed (in reverse order of pain) Matsuzaka (who walks as a free agent) Centeno Walters Rice Tovar Satin Puello The then get to add six: Syndergaard (duh) Mazzoni (comparable ERA to Syndergaard in Vegas) Verrett (even better) Leathersich (didn't produce in Vegas, but you just have to look at those K numbers to know he'll be grabbed) Muno (gravitating away from shortstop but the power numbers are desirable) Thornton (didn't pitch nearly as well after coming over, but the Mets didn't get him to lose him.) Borderline (guys you'd like to protect if'n you could) Chasen Bradford Gamboa? T.J. Rivera (eye-popping Bingo and St. Lucie batting averages) Chase Hutchingson (anybody named Chase) Xorge Carillo Darrell Ceciliani Cam Maron Miller Diaz Other Possible Guys the Mets Might Remove from the Roster or Non-Tender Brown Eveland Carlyle.
  3. Yes, it's going to take time, but a lot of time could be carved off with the way they practice it, and there are certainly more challenges per game than intentional walks. And I think it would have served the game well for them to address this.
  4. Trying to frame the offseason picture. Started to include a list of the guys eligible for the Rule 5 Draft, and... did you know a LOT of guys are eligible for the Rule 5 Draft? I mean a LOT! Some poor saps who've never played above the Gulf Coast League and likely are never gonna see St. Lucie, they've spent four or five years sapping around the Dominican Summer League and the GCL. In their DREAMS, they'll get picked in the Rule 5 Draft. Some of these saps don't even have faces. But, once I get started I can't stop. And the last table is pretty long. Please don't hate me for that. Three other notes: 1) Yeah, Dillon Gee at this point is in the bullpen. Where else are you gonna put him until parts start moving around? He's the number six starting pitcher and he's out of options. 2) The number-seven starting pitcher may or may not be Jeremy Hefner, depending on the mysterious health situation he finds himself in. But I can't find him. Did the Mets remove him from the roster before disabling him? Because that would be a bum deal for the guy, rehabbing all this time and not collecting a big league salary for it. But I also don't see him on the Rule 5 draft eligibility lists? Wouldn't he end up there if he wasn't protected by an MLB roster status? 3) Juan Carlos Gamboa. What's the deal with that guy. The record says that he played in the Mexican League. Does that mean he's no longer Mets property, or that the Mets have loaned him out to the Mexicans? Also, while the Mexican League is generally classified as AAA, I'm guessing that there's the "Mexican League" and the MEXICAN LEAGUE, because Gamboa had a dominant season after being mostly feckless in the New York Penn League the last two seasons. Who pulls off that trick? Anyhow... 5. I have no problem with allowing a pitcher to throw his four pitches. (Hey, at least it's nominal action!) This isn't where the problem is. I'm surprised they didn't do anything with trimming time off of replay challenges. (1) There's no point really for managers to have to cross the field to speak with an umpire, when a signal to a base coach or defensive player can do it. (2) There's no need for umpires to have to don coil-wire headsets behind home plate when they can carry around wireless bluetooth tech.
  6. Candidate to get the Diamondbacks job (and possibly fired two days later): Joe McEwing.
  7. Yeah, I try and frame the question as such.
  8. He is willing to go multiple innings on Torres. Sometimes.
  9. Does Terry Collins refuse to use his designated seventh- and eighth-inning guys in the sixth last night like Ned Yost did? I know Terry can muster the mental strength and confidence to break out of his self-imposed formula. I've seen him do it! But would he do it with all the chips on the line? For the purposes of this exercise, we're in a one-game playoff and Vic Black is still hurt. Terry's "seventh-inning guy" is therefore Carlos Torres. Does Terry go to Torres or Familia there? Or does he stick in an off-day starter on one day of rest. (I don't know who would be analogous to Ventura. Probably Wheeler.) (Maybe he goes with Carlyle?)
  10. I thought this was threaded already. Five Hollywood actors play themselves at an awful Hollywood party at James Franco's new home. When the Rapture strikes during a convenience store run, the runners/protagonists (Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogen) head back to the party, everything goes pell mell, and the boys try and hold out as demons run loose and anarchy breaks out among the sinners left behind.
  11. A month in which your performance is so good, it has a sexual value.
  12. KC's alright, but I don't really trust a team without a secondary color.
  13. And once more, JdG is your NATIONAL LEAGUE ROOKIE OF THE FUCKING MONTH.
  14. Depends on how badly they want out of the rest of the Reyes contract. Sixty-six big ones over the next three years, with another $22 million option or $4 million buyout in year four, is a lot for a club to suck down for a shortstop in an apparent decline. We are the team that blessedly relieved them of Jon Olerud's contract when it looked to be going bad, only to see Olerud find himself anew. All it cost was Robert Person. Not that I see this move happening, but who knows the ways of men?
  15. Vic Sage wrote: i root for the Billy Beane's Athletics, so i don't have to hear morons talk about the fact that Oakland's failure to win a championship somehow "disproves" the efficacy of quantitative statistical analysis. Love to see post-season ball in that park, too.
  16. Loathesome is as loathsome does. I got little phil ill will. What did they ever do to me, 'cept play good ball when I'd rather the Mets did? They had a nice run, but they earned it and did it around a home-grown core. Wish they beat the Yankees a few more times, but that's too bad.
  17. Bartolo Colon y esposa Paula, jealous of metirish and in desperate need of cheap US flags, spend the penultimate day of the season swearing loyalty to the USA. Take that, Maduro.
  18. Ray Knight was just my deliberately wrong guess to throw everybody off the notion that I cheated on all my correct guesses.
  19. batmagadanleadoff wrote: I think that the Marlins new stadium, uniforms, and total roster turnover erases their old douchebag image. They get a clean slate with their re-branding. Florida Marlins = dicks. Miami Marlins = cool. Yeah, I guess it could work that way, if I didn't think their stadium was garish, their uniforms clownish, and their roster turnover more of the same chump-and-dump.
