  1. Harper's no dummy. He knows that a common troll, given a high profile platform like the News, will get more page hits than Ernie Pyle or (insert journalist legend here) on his best day. Trolling gets page hits. And page hits keep the lights on. And so trolling is his game.
  2. That post inexplicably throws Daniel Murphy under the train. What's that about? Everybody needs their whipping boy.
  3. Expanding the rosters is another thing that protects people from the weaker part of their games, and so detracts from the human drama. Anthony Recker at third? That's drama!
  4. That's so incontrovertible, one of these contrarian yokels is bound to controvert it, just because. Me, I'm starting to drag emotionally on days when Harvey starts because I'm associating the tarnished insignia with him, the same way I associated black hats with Glavine.
  5. I thought I'd lose. Ya buncha contrarian yokels. The gray doesn't pop at all. It looks like primer. Gray works as a base. Not as the color of for your name and number and blessed little insignia. It's who you are. Why do you want to say so in tarnished gray? Especially rendered pencil-thin on the insignia when you have so little room to work with? Orange against royal works like few colors in the history of colors. It is the perfect orange sun against the perfectest of blue skies. It is the colors of an Indian princess and the colors of New York. It is a study in perfect color contrast. And it IS the Mets hat. Just thinking about it right now has made me happy, and I'm not a happy man. I see that new insignia and those duct tape letters and it makes me think all the world's a rainy day, our greatest minds have been locked in prison and outfitted in leftover clothes scavenged from a dumpster, and nobody's cleaned the windows for a few decades.
  6. Where do I sign, who do I give myself to, to help the Mets walk this one back? [fimg=350:2xm7v0tl]http://mlb.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pMLB2-20095567dt.jpg[/fimg:2xm7v0tl] [fimg=460:2xm7v0tl]https://img.washingtonpost.com/wp-apps/imrs.php?src=https://img.washingtonpost.com/rf/image_908w/2010-2019/WashingtonPost/2015/04/09/Sports/Images/JN2_90451428610990.jpg&w=1484[/fimg:2xm7v0tl] Alternate road, my butt. You're taking an alternate road to sartorial ruin, Mets. It looks lackadaisical and unfinished. Like a child didn't fill in an area with his crayon, or like a Photoshop project didn't designate color for an area, so it defaulted to the transparent background color.
  7. Ceetar wrote: It's absolutely why this is an issue "Absolutely"? I don't think you mean to use that word. I fear you're too caught up in your own agenda to actually read what's going on. This discussion was clearly triggered by two pitchers getting hurt.

If so, where is the rule stating how that's handled now? club presidents? sometimes it's just Manfred decided these things, because they're usually trivial. In 1973, the rule change was voted on by club presidents, who approved it, 8-4. So, no. Keith Olbermann told a story on his show yesterday about the NL putting adoption of the DH to a vote (around 1980). Philly GM Bill Giles was owner Ruly Carpenter's agent at the meeting and he had instructions to vote FOR it. But when the resolution stated that adoption of the rule, even if approved, wasn't going to begin for another two seasons Giles wasn't sure what to do and was unable to reach his owner who was out on his boat fishing in the Delaware Bay that day. So Philly wound up abstaining in the vote and that one non-vote was the margin which kept the resolution from passing. The NL has never brought it to a vote since. Makes me kind of nostalgic for the days when people were routinely unreachable. Actually a lot of things make me nostalgic for those days. Olberman largely cribbed that from Wikipedia. But Wikipedia's source is a 2013 Baseball Tonight broadcast, so maybe he's the original source after all. Anyhow, one thing missing is that Pittsburgh was instructed like someone out of 1776 to vote with Philly no matter which way they go, so Pittsburgh voted Nay also, and a proposal expected to easily gain a majority gained only four out of 12 votes (with Nelson Doubleday providing one of the Yay votes). The main NL proponent of the rule change was John Clairborne, GM of the Cardinals. Five days after the failed vote, Clairborn was replaced (related to this issue? I dunno) by Whitey Herzog, and the issue hasn't been brought to the table since.
  9. Ceetar wrote: Sure, but if all pitchers took hitting as seriously as he did last year, this wouldn't be an issue. If you've been reading attentively, you'd see that thathat's not why this is an issue. If you're concerned that pitchers and teams don't take hitting seriously enough, by all means, advocate for a more serious approach be taken. Please put the Mets and their pitchers at the front of this advocacy. The way I see it, if teams are generally neglecting an improvable part of their game, it's an opportunity for the Mets.
  10. I don't think "tough" has been a successful negotiating tactic with the MLBPA for some time.

  12. Can we agree that the rules aren't clear when they say "Any league may..." and it is ambiguous who speaks for an entire league, and what they can decide unilaterally and what they cannot? And can we agree to have no more posts beginning with "Where in the rules...?" Can we? Please? The Merger of the NL and AL and the abolishment of the presidents makes them all one entity run by the commissioner. I mean, all these things are run by committees nowadays. Can we agree that these sorts of contradictions make my head swim? The history of labor, the NLRB, and the MLBPA make it CLEAR that a change in working conditions of that magnitude will not be unilaterally imposed upon a union-organized shop without the consent and contractually negotiated agreement of said union. Certainly not with regard to a union commonly referred to as the most powerful in the country.
  13. I'm cool with Montero on the face of it. I like Montero. But I don't know the explicit reason for the start. There's been no doubleheaders and no- schedule quirks that has anybody on short rest. Secondly, I don't understand going even a day with the short bench again, if you can help it. Surely there are bull penners not getting a particularly large amount of work. But hey, transactin'! 14. Did some cross-checking, and it turns out that I had three w's from 1979 entered as q's. That didn't count on their record, so now that those wins are restored, adding in tonight's win, we're almost done with that season and that season's woe. Dillon Gee's and Daniel Murphy's effort this evening made the Mets a .500 team all the way back to Game 11 of the '79 season. In that game, ex-Mets Nino Espinosa and Tug McGraw combined for a five-hit, 3-0 shutout of their former teammates. The Espinosa trade bounty, Richie Hebner, went 0-3 in that game, with a walk, as Neil Allen went only four innings, allowing three runs. But now Neil and Richie, you're off the hook. The Mets are a .500 team, even counting your game! (But discounting all that came before your game. [fimg=750:2pidtc85]http://www.ultimatemets.com/scorecard_graph.php?game=2780&font=1[/fimg:2pidtc85]
  15. They're both there. Indeed, you participated in last night's.
  16. April 27, 1973, is the team record for shortest nine-inning game, I believe. It went only 1:36. But that technically went only 8 1/2. And the Mets lost, so...
  17. I was thinking Laggy might steal third. Cishek is in his own world out there.
  18. Send a pinch-runner in there for Doo?
  19. Wow, I thought that was catchable. Also thought Laggy would head to third.
  20. And boom, too much plate and the Mets fall behind.
