  1. Sandy as A's GM was pretty big on in-season trades.
  2. Yeah, one minute feel like a queen bee when you lasso a big league ballplayer, and then you go to Anthony Recker's (!!) wedding with a puffy Justin Turner, and you're all, "Errr... um... ."
  3. Stacking the lefties up top against Arrietta. They have to get to him early, because they could haunt them come bullpen time. Campbell and Monell. Squishy.
  4. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Fuck him. Everyone forgets how fat he got... . Oh, I don't forget this at all. I was first in line to move the guy absolutely (and coldly) philosophical that his DFA was for the best because he certainly had made himself an unattractive commodity on the market. The guy had a habit of disappearing exactly when the team needed him. Rallied in September 2013 to get himself back to average, but he was consistently not answering the bell in April through August. There's nothing a manager should crack down on faster than a guy on the fringe enjoying being a big leaguer too much (hello, Beardinhius). Casey felt this way, and so did Whitey.
  5. Last season: 109 games, 322 plate appearances, .340 / .404 / .493 // .897, 153 OPS+ This season: 69 games, 214 plate appearances, .314 / .388 / .565 // .953, 162 OPS+ As lousy as it is, we may need to accept that this may be for real, and he's the next in a line of limited-ranged white infielders (Kent, Wiggum, Fleppinger) the Mets seemingly moved too early and too cheaply. I know. Who needs more bad news?
  6. Good preview about The Two Jakes, but it lacks a certain Kinks-y element.
  7. It's interesting that independent sources have both the Dodgers and the Cubs interested in Niese. It may satisfy Sandy the market analyst to make a deal with at least the hint of a second team bidding.
  8. That's certainly what I've speculated about him. A hard bargainer. I interpreted the comment as Sandy taking the heat off his bosses by suggesting that no trade has yet gone down because he hasn't found the deal to help the team, not because the purses are to tight to take on salary.
  9. By the nature of the strategy, trying to manufacture runs diminishes your chance for a big inning while committing to the plating of a single run. Eh on you too. Can you tell me where people are generally trying to be cute? That squeeze last night was seemingly the first one called this season, clearly uncharacteristic and born of desperation, and clearly executed poorly by all three players involved. And it was probably a bad call by the manager.
  10. It seems like a team with a punchless lineup should at least be more adept at manufacturing a run when they need it. But with no base stealers at the top of the lineup, terrible bunting execution, and pop outs and strikeouts looking with men on third and less than two outs, when all they need is a deep grounder or modestly deep fly... they're rather awful at manufacturing runs. They're a team that doesn't hit homers playing for the homer.
  11. Technically, it goes on the books as a resignation. It makes sense that they would follow Metly protocol, though. There's some DiPoto-era Mets hanging around that organization, with Rico Brogna (good fit!) on the staff and Tim Bogar specially assisting the GM. It was clearly going to end with Scoscia on top. He has the juice and has a lot of medium-profile jobs open (Philadelphia, Miami, San Diego) and high-profile ones possibly opening soon (Los Angeles, Mets, Washington).
  12. But the alternative for second is whom? There's a team-wide slump going on. I'm more concerned with Granderson batting leadoff.
  13. Mets oppose Jake Arrieta with Jacob deGrom, and hope to get in on that scoring thing. [youtube:31fhfjt0]voCM0eUyG2c[/youtube:31fhfjt0]
  14. We're a long way from there, but this game could end up in the hands of our pitcher/pinch-hitter.
  15. No hope in your offense, waiting for a run to score by accident, is no recipe for entertainment.
  16. No challenge necessary.
  17. Well, now we'll see if we get a pitcher.
  18. Well, not Terry. And... Robles comes in without double switching. The virtue of stretching your pitching in extra innings seems to have been lost.

I was thinking the same thing. With two out they might have gone that way. But I don't think Terry's radicalized enough yet to use a pitcher to lead off. If they pull Familia here, there'll be a double switch anyhow.
