It's no small thing that at least part of Matz's historic day yesterday happened after he failed to get his bunt down.

Campbell had his best game of the year yesterday without putting the ball in play.

1. Terry tipped his hand earlier in the week with a statement that began "When we move Flores to second... ," so if there was a sighting of Flores working out over there, it wasn't much of a story any longer. He was expected to move when Murphy returned. 2. One of those two is going down. I suspect it'll be Dilson, as he's (ironically, considering his fate) the more valued asset. Campbell's on-base performance today also may have saved his skin. But Murphy's return is not the last transaction. Campy is still in a prime position to feel the sting when the Mets activate Wright or trade for trade for Frazier or promote Reynolds or something. 3. Sure it's a vote of confidence, but I doubt his leash is as long as most others'. On the other hand, the alternatives are few right now, apart from the one you're moving away from. It certainly could be setting up for a trade for a shortstop.

Turns out that whatever the rule is, the Mets were permitted to carry 26 guys for the afternoon, or at least for the second game. (I think it was for both game, though.) After the game, the Conservation of Lefties Law kicked in, and and Leathersich (who'd been pitching better, I think), was ticketed out. Both the Reds' middle infielders made dives and landed on their hands the last two days, both came up staring at their hands trying test the mobility of their thumbs, and both subsequently mishandled balls. Long live the Flores-to-second shift. It might have been a major story (if a dumb one), but by hiding the lineup change in Matz' debut, Terry turned it into a footnote at best. #genius

The Yomohama DeNa Baystars of the NBL Central League have just dashed the hopes of one candidate for the coveted title of Millennium Met, signing away the most successful of Las Vegas' left-handed relievers, Duane Below. Duane joins a Yokohama team that has recently ended a 12 game slide that has knocked them off their perch, but they still sit only three games off the pace in the Central. For their part, the 51s fill the void in the bullpen ably with the recently activated Jenrry Mejia, allowed to "rehab" in the minors during the final weeks of his PED suspension.

This is fascinating. Not only is there no obvious candidate for the next Met call up, there's certainly anything but a guarantee that the Millennium Met will be a call up, drowning in trade talk as we are, there is no guarantee that the MM will be a call up.

Long live Matz' batz!

Nope, Barney Robles steps into his second game.

7-2. We're in Gilmartin Country.

First pitcher to drive in four in his MLB debut as far as history records.

[bigpurple:18lmoxt9]Let's go, Matz! Let's go, Matz![/bigpurple:18lmoxt9]

Wowzers. Back out for the eighth.

Crazy to see and hear them standing and cheering in the seventh like it's the ninth and he's going for the completey.

Four RBI. Or... the most RBI in a big league debut by any Met ever. Or... something like the last month for the Mets regular three- and four-hitters, Duda and Cuddyer.

Three more sharts with RISP.

Both Red middle infielders with hurting hands here.

That's business right there. We have a third run!!

What I'm talking about!

Thirdbaseman charging like a fiend here. Swing away, man.

That's Jay Bruce out there, Johnny. Not that I blame you, with two out, but... Jay Bruce.

"Chavezesque." Gary, that was a nice play by Byrd, but you know better than that.

We had an afternoon in a the country today and we stopped into a country lodge just in time for me to look up at a screen over the bar and see this beautiful piece of tee ball excellence.
