  4. That was nicely clobbered. It's nice to have Lucas Duda back.
  5. Poking as I was around beisbol history today, I found something remarkable. If the Mets stay the course and pull off a sweep of the Padres, and the Rays were to similarly take care of business against the Tigers, the Padres would displace the Rays as the poorest performing of the active MLB franchises historically. At least, that was true enough when I first discovered their perilous predicament earlier today and began conceiving this post. Now, as I prepare to hit submit, I realize the Rays lost this afternoon to the Tigers, 21, and so will retain their ignoble crown at least until the end of this series, even if they win and the Pads lose the next two. BUT ALL BETS ARE OFF THIS WEEKEND! Below see the all-time standings for all the active teams. Note that sorting the teams by winning percentage and sorting them by games out won't get you quite the same order, due to the gross disparities in games played. But it's close enough. 6. Indeed, he could end up a Met.

  8. There's also presumably the fact that, with the altitude factor and their existence overlapping with the steroid era, the HoF electorate has been distrustful of lofty stats put up by some otherwise seemingly viable candidates such as Larry Walker and Andres Gallaraga. But you'd figure some guy like Roberto Alomar or Eddie Murray might have tacked an otherwise uneventful year in Colorado onto the end of his career.
  9. I got the idea that it was a game shot and the catcher was just offscreen. Eggshell white seats represent the existential fragility of the entire Mets franchise at the time.
  10. That's one left-handed lookin' lineup.
  11. I just realized and I must double check with youse that the Colorado Rockies have never had a Hall of Famer take the field for them. Is this possibly right?
  12. Went 1-2 with a RS, an RBI, two walks, and a SB. That's a very Nimmo debut!!
  13. Well, that sounds like some bad research by Young Guy McClearhead. To be clear, I have nothing against not sending a ballot to writers who haven't had a baseball beat or written on baseball for years. While that set may have a largish overlap with old (or relatively old) guys, it's not the same thing. And there's nothing about having or not having a current baseball beat that logically should be associated with honoring or not honoring the character and sportsmanship criteria.
  14. I'd agree with that, yes, but I'm not sure the Mets can necessarily endure his loss more than they could have three-four weeks ago. I think they're gonna want that starting catcher redundancy for the rest of the season. And if d'Arnaud is going to walk himself safely across the finish line, then they possibly look to deal his partner in the offseason. If a super-trade goes down (not sure it will, but...), I don't think he'll be part of the package. I'm thinking Herrera and Flores seem kind of redundant right now, so maybe one of them is more expendable.
  15. I'm guessing the plan will be the same as last time keep Plawecki around until d'Arnaud demonstrates that he's ready to catch a starter's workload (80% or so) and then swap in Recker as the backup until September (or until they get sick of him).
  16. I'd post a Top Ten Things about this photo, but I could never limit myself to ten.
  17. How cool is it, though, that what could have been demoralizing ill tidings for everybody was the lower hand to the three aces of Syndergaard's performance, Wright's appearance, and the pre-emptive acquisition of Clippard? Don't bring me no bad news.

Ceetar wrote: ... and are on record stating they're voting for arbitrary personal reasons. And the younger ones are somehow pure? Ceetar wrote: And I KNOW a few of the younger guys (who can't vote yet). But you KNOW them all caps and that's somehow important to you. But not to me. Ceetar wrote: ...but because they're more apt to take a logical, fact-based approach. I'd like to see a logical fact-based argument for why I should believe this. I see plenty of young writers making arguments I disagree with, regurgitating received wisdom that is based in anything but established fact. Like the notion that morality guidelines are ignorant. They're not. I saw a young writer write last week that Pete Rose should be inducted because Ty Cobb was a rapist.
  20. Not only pulled within a game of foist last night, but gained a game in the Wild Card on both the Cubs and the previously hotter-'n'-Hell Giants. Strangely, the Phillies are a last-place juggernaut right now. Five in a row and nine of the last ten, but still sit comfortably at the bottom of the league. They sure are breaking Toronto's spirit, though. The Jays had neither Reyes nor Tulowitzki on hand and had to make their stand with Ryan Goins at short as they fell 32.
  21. I imagine this makes him ineligible for the 2016 post-season. Is that correct? If so, that surely increases the likelihood of a non-tender. Am I wrong in thinking that the North American indy leagues tend to honor PED suspensions handed out in affiliated ball?

  23. I don't like giving up Lagares and Nimmo in one deal, even if we get Gomez back.
  24. It certainly makes sense not to make a decision you don't have to, unless you think you could gain something by sending some kind of message. But the guy is off the roster, off the payroll, and his career is in shambles. I don't see what there is to gain by doing anything except getting on with the season and the business of running the team. It's a big week!
  25. Here's hoping the Padres don't even it up. XLhxF-Un39k
