batmagadanleadoff wrote: Everyone's all of a sudden trying to redo the Mets bullpen. Familia was fine, more or less. Gordon HR'd off him but that'll happen. Nobody's infallible. That freak error aka the inside the parker was the real killer in Game #1. I wish people wouldn't try and extrapolate so much deep meaning from five games. I find all this over- analysis so tedious and tiresome, I barely read any of it anymore. I'd rather just enjoy the WS for the spectacle that it is and the history that it'll make and leave it at that. I don't know that the Royals are better. What's better? The teams'd have to play each other hundreds of times head to head to figure that one out. And if they did and the Royals ended up winning, say, 154 out of 300, would that settle anything? The Mets absolutely demolished the Cubs in the NLCS. Made mince meat ouf of them. Does anybody really think the Mets are that much better than the Cubs? If at all? The Mets led in every game. The Mets should lobby for shorter games.

I'm sorry my observation invokes desperate prayer. I'm responding to a statement from Transmonk, and my response is rooted in reason. There shouldn't be a whole lot of extra-contextual meaning extrapolated from that. I think the idea that answers should only come from the outside and dramatic offseason transacting and not be the result of years of building doesn't hold up. And I think harvesting from the fruits of those years of building isn't "doing dick." OE: Nonetheless, I expect there will be transacting and nothing I wrote should imply advocacy for or a prediction to the contrary.

I don't think the Mets bullpen was average. I think it was and is a strong bullpen. They had a 3.48 bullpen ERA (compared to a league average of 3.66) and a WHIP of 1.235 (league average = 1.298). And they were augmented in the end by two strong starters. Average fielding? Well, I'd say that's probably as generous as the notion of an average bullpen is ungenerous. At least.

The Tribe of Nancy: Wifey Watch and SOs, 2015
Edgy MD replied to Edgy MD's topic in New York Mets Talk
I'm guessing that they aren't backwards so much as those spineless, sort of ribbon or string binding that people do with self-constructed family albums. -
TransMonk wrote: I, too, worry about power. It will be hard to rely on Wright for more than 15-ish HRs (essentially replacing what will be lost when Murphy leaves). Duda's consistency is also a big question mark for me. It seems like power is going to have to potentially come from a new center fielder or middle infielder...which is not where one traditionally finds a lot of pop. A full year from d'Arnaud would help...but I've never seen one of those before. It's very early in the off-season, but I'm on the Colby Rasmus bandwagon. Well, it's good to see that we don't have to buy into the rebuild-like-KC-with-high-contact-high-batting-average line. Obviously, we can't "rely" on anybody for anything, but Wright is a good bet to provide more than he (and Campbell) did last year. And we can reasonably expect more power to come organically from catcher and left field.
-
I agree. Valentin was cool, though. And they got him on an NRI deal. Most otherwise, though, they bought that team.
-
I think way too much was made of KC's superior bullpen. I was generally happy with what the Mets came with. But, you know, KC won. I think there are a lot of assets to work with, and they won't need too much supplementing. Montero's condition is a mystery to the public at the moment and may be a mystery to the Mets as well. Black too. I think I left him off the list of minor league free agents, but I'm pretty sure that's where he's headed. (I started that list before he got removed from the roster near the end of the season.

Not this guy's: [fimg=400:bpl3fojw]http://lesterslegends.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Curtis-Granderson.jpg[/fimg:bpl3fojw]
-
He is. And I really appreciated how he assumed many of Wright's "face o' the franchise duties" while Wright was away from the team. But people get dealt. And the river rolls on.
-
We will get them tomorrow, though. Tomorrow being Opening Day 2016, a contest in which the defending champs are frankly doomed.
-
I do think it's the beginning of a string of excellence. I've been using the term "golden era" or "golden age" and I've been using it at least since spring. I know I didn't suggest any such thing in 2006.
-
Al Leiter is a big proponent of cash in his pocket. If that came to pass, apart from the ugliness, we could probably expect a work stoppage or four as the players and owners fought over this new pot.
-
I think about that also, but I was always curious how much we make assumptions about that. We get extreme results like Prior and Wood, and then we follow the breadcrumbs backward to hang their injuries on Baker. But how much of that is coincidence and how much is causality? And are we selecting data to get the result we want? Obviously, the Mets obsess over the health of young pitchers, but here we are, with Harvey, deGrom, Matz, and Wheeler, all with surgically repaired arms. Maybe Baker is to blame, but humility suggests we need to dig further. Here's an old point-coutnerpoint article about Baker: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/354126-does-dusty-baker-abuse-pitchers What's interesting is to look at "Well, we'll see" cases they bring up back in 2010 Homer Bailey and such from the 2015 perspective.
-
Just posting this because the Mets are going to need an outfielder and Centerfield has expressed underwhelming feelings about the free agent and internal options, apart from Cespedes. This might be a third route. Might. Man, there's not a large difference between Korean baseball players and NASCAR drivers with regard to how they are tricked out, is there?

John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Fun to see a name I don't know anything about, Luis Carpio, make the list. I imagine a combination of Mike Carp and Jorge Julio Handsome 18-year-old Venezuelan who jumped the GCL, going from the DSL to Kingsport, where you'll almost never see a top-ten prospect. But he got on base with a Dilsonian efficiency. He explodes out of a a squat stance like Ricky Henderson, but isn't a big stealer. They like how he moves on D but they aren't projecting a lot of growth in his game in the future.

The Dodgers and Cubs couldn't get him out in the post-season.
-
So, from the Mets PoV, who's our winner?

As they build their roster for 2016, the Mets look to have a lot less redundancy than they had last year. Looking at how many players were dealt away at or around the trade deadline, and that almost all of them came from the AA level, you'll see a big soft spot this coming offseason around the AA-AAA bubble. Consider at this time last year, Noah Syndergaard was about 10th on the organizational depth chart for starting pitchers. A top-five-in-the-universe prospect with a full season of AAA under his belt — many or most teams might look at such a specimen as the guy the whole season hinges on. The Mets were all "Well, we'll call you when we need you." With graduations like his, with the deal-offs, with the number of minor league vets who moved to the Asian leagues toward the end of last summer, and with all the minor league free agents below, the Mets will have to get creative in order to strengthen the upper minor leagues and to give themselves similar support. But, you know, the basic core of the roster is the core of a league champion. All off-seasons have to start somewhere. But this looks like a tough one for Paul DePodesta. The Mets were reportedly highly motivated to sign Cespedes when they realized how willing he was to patrol center. Now that that willingness has to be understood in the context of (1) some questionable instincts and (2) perhaps some damaged health, they clearly are going to reassess. Which doesn't mean they'll pull out, but it changes the calculations. I'm not necessarily concerned with what's out there. At least right now. There are alternatives on the trade market and the international market and such. We'll see how things unfold. We have this exclusive period to work with. But right now, Cespedes is golfer with a bum shoulder and a swollen knee.
-
I certainly noted it at the time.

Outfielder who has had his rights posted by the Lotte Giants of KBO. High average, high OBP, relatively low in the power department. Will be 28 next season, which is younger than virtually all MLB free agents. KBO works with the old posting system, which means all bids are blind. Additionally, the team can withdraw him if they don't like the high bid.

Mets Willets Point wrote: It seems the Mets are richest in starting pitching and therefore a starting pitcher would be what other teams would most want in a trade, but I don't want to see any of them go. What do folks think is the likelihood that we'll have a rotation with Harvey, deGrom, Syndergaard & Matz next season? Nothing guaranteed, but pretty high, I would think.
-
FWIW, there's no need to be firing anybody. Terry's contract expires at the end of this season. He has a 2016 option, but letting him go is as easy as willing it.

IGT World Series Game 5 - Royals at Mets - 11/1/15
Edgy MD replied to Gwreck's topic in Archived Game Threads
"I've got to make a better throw regardless. I'm not going to sit here and make excuses about grip or whatever. There are no excuses about what happened. It is what it is." "It took some balls. It really did take some balls. Down by one in the ninth, two outs, you've got to tip your hat. He got an outstanding read, and like I said, I didn't make the throw." "I know for me, personally, I'm not going to dwell on it. I'll definitely reflect on it. I'll learn from it. I'll get better from it. But hopefully, I'll move on." Boo For Kansas City's part, Rusty Kuntz insists Hosmer ran because of how well KC had scouted the Mets and they knew Duda's was an arm they could challenge. And so Kuntz gets himself a ring, but a pretty shiny ring doesn't change the sad fact that his name is Rusty Kuntz. -
When faced with either one move (pulling Harvey) or the other (riding Harvey), it seems most of us see the middle ground as the most viable: of riding Harvey until the leadoff batter gets on, and then pulling him. Sometimes it's better to be wise than smart. (I'm looking at you, Brian Kenney. Indefensible? Go back to your tanning salon.) And I'll repeat that it was foolish for the over-pumped Harvey to run out to the mound. Stay calm and stay in your zone, man.
