  1. I take it back, I think. There won't be a roster pinch, I think, because of the magic roster spot created by the Jenrry Mejia suspension.
  2. I like when MLB legacy pitchers are the sons of hitters and hitters who are sons of pitchers.
  3. Not sure who the Blevins signing knocks out. Edgin, until the team is confident he's ready for full-time duty? Gilmartin, so the Mets can send him down to the minors where they can reinitialize his career as a starter? Keep three lefties and knock out Goeddel, who performed well, but saw the least time? Anyhow, I see a deepish bullpen that's a potential asset, health and other realities permitting. Aside from that, I see another Monell-threatening roster pinch developing. 4. Yeah. A son of Sergio if ever there was one.
  5. Great. I meant to start a thread sometime on this, but here is as good a place as any. Blevins pitched to 15 batters, retiring them all, before having his season end. Has anybody ever had a longer perfect season? I imagine a solid handful have gone deeper into a season before surrendering their first baserunner, but perhaps none have had the dubious grace to get injured before that first guy ever reached.
  6. well fine. I certainly could've researched that one a tad. but none of these guys were borderline. the closest is Jackie, I guess, but it's not like his playing career didn't or wouldn't've merited it by its lonesome. Jackie Robinson's ten most similar guys: George Grantham (934) Denny Lyons (885) Freddie Lindstrom (873) * Edgardo Alfonzo (873) Jose Vidro (871) Mike Greenwell (865) Jeff Cirillo (863) Irish Meusel (855) Joe Randa (853) Melvin Mora (853) *Hall of Famer It's hard to say how much more of a career he might have had, of course, but even without, you know, baseball's ban on black players, college and football and World War II would likely have delayed the start of his career to some extent anyhow. Jackie Robinson, absent his crowning achievement of integrating baseball (character! sportsmanship!), is no automatic case.
  7. metsmarathon wrote: what borderline case has it pushed a guy in on? it seems to be a door that swings only one way. Three broadly admired guys that come to mind who made it in by the skin of their teeth: Gary Carter, Bill Mazeroski, and Red Schoendienst. I can't testify to the mind of every (or perhaps any) voter, but their (alleged) elevated integrity certainly was presented with their cases. I'm not sure why Gary Carter's case shouldn't be treated as borderline, as it took him six ballots. The Hall had been very stingy on catchers in the years after Bench's election. Ted Simmons, Darrell Porter, and Lance Parrish didn't sniff any support. Carlton Fisk finally broke the logjam in 2000. I also don't know why these things cited on their plaques shouldn't matter except in borderline cases. Your claim was that they don't appear at all. You're moving the goalposts on me.

  9. A wealth of Mets feedback there. Thanks.
  10. Signed away by the Twins, according to Rhett Bollnger of MLB.com. Looked 10 years older than his listed age, and impish. Came up with a rep as the best defensive shortstop in the Mets' system (at the time, anyhow), but never much got a chance to put that on display, logging 50 defensive innings over two seasons. Was reduced to mostly playing other infield positions at Vegas this season as the team tried to get as much work as possible there for Matt Reynolds. Called up very late in the season in both 2013 and 2014 when the Mets found themselves short on infielders at the end of the season. In 2013, Ruben Tejada had broken a leg chasing a popup with about two weeks to go. In 2014, he had actually been sent home, but ended up getting recalled with a week to go when Dilson Herrera strained a quad. History could have given him an eleventh-hour trifecta with Ruben Tejada once again ending his season in a boot this year, but the team went for the super-green Matt Reynolds in the post-season, and out-righted poor Wilfredo instead. And thus he became a minor league freebie.
  11. Maybe one of those escape clauses is what the situation needs. Sign him for six, and allow him to walk after two or three if he's out-playing his deal. I wish my brother Sandy was here.
  12. well, that's basically my point though. setting aside the whole steroids question, has there really been a player who was not voted in for his playing record, first and foremost? the writers don't go talking about players in the waning stages of their careers as "fred's sportsmanship is off the charts. the way he congratulates opposing hitters when they hit home runs, he's paving his way to the hall of fame" or "there goes billy again, arguing with the ump that he really was out on that play. that kind of integrity is going to get him into the hall after he finally calls it a career" or "after every game, chet goes down to the children's hospital and spends his game check paying for cancer treatments of all the kids - he's been doing it every day of his career now; he's a hall of famer if I've ever seen one." no, it's all about the playing record, and to a lesser extent the wibbly wobbly contributions to his team thing. I guess that means winning instead of losing. unless the writers decide they really need something to make a fuss over. then, all of a sudden, oh, this guy didn't have enough character, even though his playing career makes him so much more than a borderline case. honestly, though, I don't give too much of a flying fuck about pete rose getting into the hall. the inconsistency of the application of the voting standards is what gets me. if character, sportsmanship, and integrity mattered a damn, ty cobb would be nowhere near that place, and Gaylord perry would be persona non grata. it's all about the playing career. the rest of that shit is just blah blah blah, lets talk nice about the guys we're enshrining - I'm sure they're just wonderful people. but it's all about the playing career. you know what's on the plaques under the relief images of the players enshrined in the hall? playing record. not a record of their sportsmanship. not a record of their integrity. not a record of their character. playing career. lets stop the farce. "pete rose. Charlie hustle, hit king, etc. he bet on baseball as a player and manager, and received a lifetime ban from baseball in 1989" You acknowledge up front that these assessments have made a difference, but hen deny that further down. Character and sportsmanship aresn't supposed to be everything. They're supposed to be a factor. And they are. While it's explicitly listed as a qualifying factor (and always has been), there's nothing farcical about people honoring that. There are borderline cases that have been swung either way by assessments of a guy's character. As for Rose, it makes little sense to give a guy baseball's highest honor while he's banned. I'm rooting for Rose, as much as he doesn't deserve it. But induction the Baseball Hall of Fame, should it happen, shouldn't be the first step in his rehabilitation. It should be the last. And yes, there are plaques that mention players' character. Gary Carter: "AN EXUBERANT ON-FIELD GENERAL WITH A SIGNATURE SMILE... . ... TIRELESS WORK ETHIC ... ." Jackie Robinson: "DISPLAYED TREMENDOUS COURAGE AND POISE IN 1947 WHEN HE INTEGRATED THE MODERN MAJOR LEAGUES IN THE FACE OF INTENSE ADVERSITY." Cal Ripken, Jr: "ARRIVED AT THE BALLPARK EVERY DAY WITH A BURNING DESIRE TO PERFORM AT HIS HIGHEST LEVEL. DEDICATION AND WORK ETHIC RESULTED IN... ." And the moral degeneracy of Ty Cobb, as unpleasant a character as he might have been, is greatly overstated.
  13. Fare thee well, Kari Ann Gee. Like your husband, you exceed expectations. And Hudson, like his dad, preferred to be photographed with a hat.
  14. Was I right or was I right? Pete Rose is now the shafted hardworking white guy who earned every penny he got, having now been shoved aside by thugs and freeloaders who want everything handed to them (or they'll just take it). I'm not saying what color these people are but look for yourself.
  15. Very close. I dislike both insets depicting demoralized opposition fans. That's a punk move, and not in a good sense. A very Daily News move, too. I went for YES-PEDES because I like how the right edge of the subtitle follows the arc of Cespedes' back.
  16. Yeah, I was just gonna leave that handsome baseball on the tee right there. I've got work to do. So I gotta type fast and get back to the grind. Anybody who's read A Terrible Beauty (a W.B. Yeats reference for a subtitle!), offseason book reports are encouraged.
  17. Mostly just three paragraphs. The Bill James part is a copy-and-paste job.
  18. No. Why do you ask? You asked a question. I answered.
  19. Prediction: He serves the six-year sentence, with the Giants carrying him a good stretch of the way.
  20. If one were to take the time to document a thousand instances in which Ty Cobb went out of his way to be kind to people, including black people, would this change his image? I fear it would not. No one really knows whether or not J. Edgar Hoover was a homosexual, yet stories of his attending parties in a dress, stories which are not only false but preposterous, have stained the culture, and cannot be bleached out . . . In any case, it isnt that the stories of Ty Cobb as a violent racist are false, but rather, that there is another Ty Cobb as well, undocumented because he is less dramatic. In the first edition of this book I wrote an essay about a photograph, a photo of Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson. Here, Ill re-print it: In photographs (make it a point to notice) Ty Cobb is often shown hiding one hand or both, twisting an arm behind his back or burying it in an article of excess clothing. One photograph of him with which I am particularly taken shows him posing with Christy Mathewson in the dugout before the third game of the 1911 World Series. Mathewson, as always, looks poised and confident, staring out toward right field. Cobb is peeking out of the corner of his eye at some unseen distraction another photographer, probably but what makes the photograph remarkable is that, to begin with, Cobb is wearing a suit that doesnt look as if it could possibly have fit any of his relatives. Cobb was a big man (he is usually listed at 62?, 180) yet this suit has got to be four sizes too large for him it is hard to believe that a reputable haberdasher would have let him leave the store with it. He is holding what looks like an expensive overcoat, and he appears to be dragging it on the ground. His hat is jaunty and his smile is decidedly nervous, and he looks frankly a little bit crazy. There was such a contradiction in that dugout. Cobb was then a five-time American League batting champion, with more or less seven seasons under his belt and yet he was also a twenty-four-year-old hick from Nowhere, Georgia, a little in awe of Matty, of the photographers, of the crowd. He had no weapons, at that moment, to defend himself against his inadequacies no spikes, no bat, no glove. He was so crude that he must have felt that whenever they took those things away from him, his shortcomings glowed like hot iron. And whenever he saw them glowing, he got angry. You can see it in his face, I think, that if he could just put on that uniform and go out on the field it would be such a relief to him, out where manners and taste and style were all defined by bases gained and bases lost. And everyone, for a change, would have to apologize to him. Since then I have noticed several other photographs in which Cobb has the same crazy look on his face. It is not an angry look; it is, rather, a look of acute embarrassment, a look of inadequacy. Ty Cobbs racism and his anger, I believe, were fueled not by smugness or even resentment, but by an unusually intense fear of his own limitations. No one is more macho than a man who feels inadequate; no one walks straighter than a man who is half drunk. When Ty Cobb felt threatened he lashed out at the world. He felt threatened a lot but as long as he wasnt challenged, he was a very nice man. Bill James As it is, someone has taken the time to try to give the other side of the story, or the bigger picture, of Cobb. Whether it will make a difference or as Bill James says he fears it won't, time will tell. But I'm going to give it a read when I get a chance.
  21. He's frequently cited as baseball's most textbook example of a loathsome irredeemable person. The game was racist, but he was the racistest. The game was rough, but he was an assassin in cleats. When the case for Rose's induction comes up, an argument is frequently made to the tune of If the despicable Ty Cobb is in the Hall of Fame, how can they keep Rose out? The biopic of him depicted him as attempting to rape a woman but pathetically failing because he can't achieve an erection. His moral degeneration is symbolized in his physical degeneration, the way we like it. But that incident didn't appear in the rather vicious bio that the film is based on, or any other account. The filmmakers defended it as "something he might have done," which is a justification that is itself reprehensible, from where I sit. We also like our national sins put in little compartments. The whole institution was racist, but really the racism was on the likes of Hornsby and Cobb. Walter Johnson and Christy Matthewson and Lou Gehrig were good decent men who were better than that. I agree they were better, but the sin should be fairly placed on everybody who participated in it and benefited from it. And not just on an socially awkward rube from Cottonsville, The South. That's just too easy.
