  1. Groundout to second. Very close play, but no replays in spring training.
  2. Three walks in the second inning for Hembree. Bases juice and two outs for Reynolds...
  3. Sources say he's got a minor league contract offer from the Yankees on the table. Hope he tells them to stick it. Go to Japan and show everybody what's what, Ruben.
  4. Grand Slam in the ninth by Con4to helped make it respectable.
  5. Yeah, I done it. I done it good and you know it's true. Yeah, folks bitch about my throwing, but the numbers don't exactly indict me. I'm a big league catcher and my rate stats put me at or near the top of the heap. Question is, can I do it for a full season. I know you're asking that. Well, you need to show some guts and answer it yourself. I'm kinda busy.
  6. Ceetar wrote: I doubt player rep Adam Eaton has read LaRoche's contract. And if it was, couldn't LaRoche have just said "no, I have it in writing he can be here" and would they have even tried to stop making it a permanent thing if they had it contractually guaranteed? I know for certain that you and I have not read it. We're all speculating.
  7. Ceetar wrote: I doubt there was a written clause in the contract, but maybe. Well, player rep Adam Eaton reportedly says otherwise. Ceetar wrote: Did it stipulate he gets his own locker and jersey? That he should clean spikes and help out and get to shag flies? And what point does this run afoul of child labor laws? I'm pretty sure the first two aren't really the issue. As for the last one, I can imagine the Sox management feared that they were setting a bad example and were getting called out, or suspected they might be. Maybe the kid is homeschooled to the gills when he's not at the ballpark.
  8. Chris Sale, who has some sort of cross between the juice of David Wright and the can-do-no-wrong affection of Jacob deGrom, is opening up both barrels. (Sorry about the Deadspin link but it collect links from more authoritative sources.) MLBPA is getting involved.
  9. Dude behind the plate wearing a script "New York" road jersey with Keith Hernandez's number and captain's "C." What a horror.
  10. Bart raked in the first. Raked.
  11. Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale A tale without censorship It started with a title run And a bold World Series trip The Mets were a mighty baseball team And they added several guys Between all them and those replaced There’d be many goodbyes! The series outcome sure was rough And the add-ons had a cost The hardest choices still to come O, many Mets were lost! O, many Mets were lost! The team ground through the winter months With Mets tossed on the pile Like Niuwenhuis! And Clippard too! O’Flaherty! And Scott Rice! Juan U-Ri-Be! Jack Leathersich and Dillon Gee! HERE IN METLY EXILE!! ___ So this is the tale of Met castaways Some Mets for a long, long time They’re spread all throughout Florida Or Arizona’s clime Eric Young and Bobby P Will do their very best To make another roster and To pass each steroid test No Niese!, No Murph! No Recker here! A handsome catcher he Like Cary Grant in Houseboat He’s sex beside the sea! So join us here each week my friends, For updates with a smile! Of all these twenty-fifteen guys LOST IN METLY EXILE!!!
  12. And add in thems wot we've acquired. #NeilWalker #AntonioBastardo #ThatHendersonDude Still, that seems a lot of Met dudes with with big-league pedigree that they've shed in one offseason, no?
  13. How are your recent ex-Mets doing in their first spring training with another team? You don't want to root against them, but you want to think that the Mets were smart enough to move on when they did. OH, you're so TORN!! Darrell Ceciliani, Toronto Blue Jay is 8 for 18 with a homer and four RBI, for a line of .444 / .565 / .778 // 1.343. Yikey. Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Milwaukee Brewer, on the other hand, is 4 for 22, with 1 RBI, slashing at .182 / .250 / .364 // .614. That's even a little more foreboding when you see he's piled up a very Kirky 12 strikeouts. But Daniel Murphy, Washington National, looks upon Kirk's .614 OPS and wonders where he can buy some of that. Daniel is 3-20 so far, and while two of those hits are doubles and he's knocked in four runs, a .150 / .190 / .250 // .440 line is not what the Nats are paying for. But Daniel's not the only modest-powered, white second baseman/utility guy the Mets let fly this offseason. Why, there's Kelly Johnson, Atlanta Brave. Kelly's boomeranged back to the Braves with a .263 / .417 / .421 // .838 line that shames nobody. He's gone 5-19 and he's second or third on the depth chart at four or so positions, so he'll be starting soon enough. You can't think of Kelly without calling to mind Juan Uribe, Cleveland Indian, who arrived in the same trade. Juan's a pro and he started out as if to show he's put his bruised torso (and scary windedness) behind him, getting three hits in his first six at-bats. But he was forced to leave camp last week to clear up a visa issue. Good luck with that, Juan! We'll be counting on you when the Indians face the Yankees. Want to know know who's tearing up the Grapefruit League. Why, Wilfredo Tovar, Minnesota Twin, that's who! Tovarisch has gone to the plate 19 times and line up .333 / .368 / .389 // .757 display on the scoreboard, which I'm certain is better than anything you've ever done. But you know what the world needs? Catchers. Burly, rugged, handsome catchers. And that's why we turn our attention to Anthony Recker, Cleveland Indian. There's nothing wrong with his visa, and frankly if he had to enter the country, they would just let him walk right in, knowhatimean? Anthony has had limited experience, because you don't want to over-expose an attraction like that, but he's gone one for three with a walk and a homer. That's as it should be. And happy times seem afoot for Eric Young, Jr., Milwaukee Brewer. Eric has been to the plate 21 times, and racked up a .368 / .381 / .368 // .749 line. He'll be doing there what he did for us, desperately trying to compete for playing time with Kirk Niuwenhuis. Let's look at the pitchers. That starts with Jonathon Niese, Pittsburgh Pirate. Niesey has thrown but five innings for his new team, but that's been enough to log an 0-2 record and a 14.40 ERA. He has walked three and struck out but two. Clearly the Mets defense is still hurting him. You can't think of Niese without your mind immediately wandering to Dillon Gee, Kansas City Royal. Dillon has had a far healthier five innings, going 1-0 and posting a 1.80 ERA. He has walked two and struck out three and maybe we'll see him in our opening series. You know who spent a lot of time as a Met? Bobby Parnell, Detroit Tiger did. And despite being a bull penner, he's logged more time than his starting teammates above this spring, having thrown 5.1 innings to the tune of a 3.38 ERA. He's walked four and struck out four and I can't think of anything that sounds more Parnellian than that. Did somebody say walks?! Well, that brings to mind Álex Torres, Atlanta Brave. Alex is unsecured upon in his five innings of work thus far, protecting Atlanta leads as doggedly as he protects his noggin. Álex has whiffed four and to his credit, walked but one. Álex Torres, ladies and gentlemen. But you can't talk about Álex without thinking of Carlos Torres, Atlanta Brave (also!). The longtime Met garbage-time reliever is matching his namesake almost batter for batter, throwing a scoreless 4 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking two. He's yielded but one hit!! Relievers throwing goose eggs? Well surely that's not the situation with Tyler Clippard, Arizona Diamondback. Well, not quite, but that little mercenary isn't doing too bad either, yielding one run in four innings which adds up to a 2.25 ERA. He's struck out five and walked three and THAT'S NOT SUSTAINABLE, TYLER! Surely, you say, surely Eric O'Flaherty, Pittsburgh Pirate isn't mowing them down so prolifically. Well he fookin' is! That ol' Irishman Airc Ó Flaithbheartaigh has pitched through St. Patrick's Day to the tune of five innings and a 1.80 ERA. And while that tune may sound like a sweet Irish air, he's walked two and given up seven hits, so this tune may turn sour soon enough. Scott Rice, Arizona Diamondback has reason to be pissed. He got re-assigned to minor league camp without having faced a single batter. What a bunch of crap! I bet Clippard put a scorpion in his bed or something. That would be so Tyler Clippard. Also re-assigned-without-activity has been Jack Leathersich, Chicago Cub. Unfortunately, we know his bad fortune isn't Clippard-related, but rather the result of a bum elbow. Jack will miss all of 2016 with Tomato Juice surgery. Best of luck, Jack! Anyhow, thanks for playing Camping with the Castaways. I'm Bob Ewbanks and we'll see you tomorrow.
  14. The Nats have a "Gio" and a "Giolito"?
  15. Yeah, the system may congested with shortops, but they just cut one loose, and I'm not far behind, with the road in front of me now blocked only by the injured Cabrera. And Flores. And Reynolds. And maybe Muno. And possibly a non-roster player or two. Baseball is tough. But I may be tougher. I'm Gavin Cecchini and I've gone from an all-field/no-hit prospect to a hits-pretty-good-if-he-can-hack-it-in-the-field guy. And you know what? Both those reports are WRONG. I'm going to break through this year. Wadda you think? [fimg=500:msjxnpgq]https://metsmlb.files.wordpress.com/2015/03/gavin-cecchini-photo-day-1.jpg[/fimg:msjxnpgq]
  16. Perhaps, but now any player who comes out and says he was unhappy is going to look like a DEEK. And even if he says it off the record, I imagine the players have a good idea who has been talking to whom. It started out as penny-ante poker, but now THE STAKES HAVE BEEN RAISED INCREDIBLY HIGH!
  17. This could get stinkier before it gets better. Reports surfacing that the team openly discussed staging a walkout in support of father and son, and that during the discussion, Chris Sale directly told Williams to get out of the clubhouse. Got to find a way to get more at-bats for Ken Rosenthal. He's on fire. [fimg=300]https://pbs.twimg.com/profile_images/545915462609932288/X_vDhHiE.png[/fimg] OE: Also follow Jeff Passan, who says Sale "lit up" Williams.
  18. Giving a preferential option to those who played who played for the team getting their old numbers if they return as coaches (if it's not already assigned to a player) is a pretty long-running tradition, though, isn't it? Yogi wore 8. Willie wore 24. Harrelson wore 3. Stearns wore 12. That's a stretch of precedence that gets us from the sixties to the aughts Even less legendary types got low numbers. Bobby Valentine got 2. Mike Cubbage got 4. And they didn't even wear those numbers as Mets players! It's kind of a nice bow to their notability. But players, Mookie will tell you, still get precedence in times of conflict. Bob Geren in 7 was another story. And he didn't even show his appreciation by sticking around.
  19. Jacob deGrom is getting into badass form, striking out three and giving up but one hit in his three innings. Mr. Matz wasn't as successful, giving up three runs in four innings of work. The Neo-Deadball Era continues as only one of the Mets' nine hits went for extra base, compared to three of nine for the Marlins. None flew over the fence. Curtis Granderson had two hits and is up to .357. Cespedes went 1-1 and is at .381. Johnny Monell (.389) is threatening to make the team, perhaps as an extra bat if the team breaks camp with 11 pitchers, possibly as the backup catcher dude, if they decide to get Plawecki more plaworki.
  20. I don't know. He probably isn't hanging out with his dad all the time, but learning absolutely filthy sex stuff out in the bullpen, getting a couple hundred bucks to run to Chiplotle with the clubbies, learning Spanish slurs, choking guys with Jonathan Papelbon, taking a little BP, signing a few autographs, practicing his mack on middle school-aged baseball groupies, cutting class, stealing cigarettes and beer, and having the time of his life.
  21. Eric Campbell, you are, surprisingly, triumphant.
  22. Vic Black, who surprisingly said goodbye to New York without having secured a job with another team, has seemingly clarified his situation by undergoing shoulder surgery. I suspect the next time we see him will be with an independent league team. We’ll keep him and the rest of our dangling minor league free agents around until the end of spring. But hey, look, Brooks Conrad found a job! Logan Verrett gets punched into the grid in the bullpen, as he's the last pitcher in camp available for that slot who is on the 40-man roster. But with Tejada's release, there's an open roster spot, so the Hendersons of the world need not despair utterly. And speaking of Tejada's release, the only available infielder left in camp and on the roster is Eric Campbell. So my dream of a boo-free opening day may not come to pass after all. 23. And, as expensive as setting up a broadcast crew might be, there's something to be said for using spring training the way teams use them and throw some opportunities to out-of-work and aspiring broadcasters, apprentice camera operators, college intern sideline reporters, psychotic statisticians, openly gay post-game hosts, and the like. The MLB network games are fun for that very reason. I get an occasional "Hey, look, Tom O'Malley and Brian McRae are sharing the booth!" without having to worry about them stinking up a game that counts in the standings.
  24. Yeah, they're both within their rights. I just think it's kinda stinky for either side to talk openly about it. How'd you like to go from the kid with the big league dad to the kid whose dad had to eat $13 million and the last year of his big league career in order to protect?
  25. Adam LaRoche ... was known for always having his son around the team including in the clubhouse where the kid would pal around with Bryce Harper who was closer in age to the kid than he was to the father. Shmoly shmap! Ken Rosenthal is reporting that LaRoche retired as a matter of principle when management told him to stop bringing his kid around so much. Just talked to ‪#‎White‬ Sox president Ken Williams. Here is what he told me about LaRoche: "There has been no policy change with regards to allowance of kids in the clubhouse, on the field, the back fields during spring training. This young man that we're talking about, Drake, everyone loves this young man. In no way do I want this to be about him. "I asked Adam, said, 'Listen, our focus, our interest, our desire this year is to make sure we give ourselves every opportunity to focus on a daily basis on getting better. All I'm asking you to do with regard to bringing your kid to the ballpark is dial it back.' "I don't think he should be here 100 percent of the time - and he has been here 100 percent, every day, in the clubhouse. I said that I don't even think he should be here 50 percent of the time. Figure it out, somewhere in between. "We all think his kid is a great young man. I just felt it should not be every day, that's all. You tell me, where in this country can you bring your child to work every day? "I respect the man and his decision. I can't disagree with what (Blaine Boyer) said about Adam as a person. But I take exception to the 'evil' part." Boyer said of LaRoche earlier: "He is an unbelievable husband, an unbelievable father, a friend you can only dream of. "I honestly think this is between good and evil. I know which side Adam lives on. I'm thankful to see the way he's acting. It's an unbelievable test of who he is, the husband he is, the father he is." How mortifying. And way to keep a family matter private, Ken Williams. This could get stinkier before it gets better.
