  2. I think it was Marty Appel, his friend, who collaborated with him on his book. Here it is: http://research.sabr.org/journals/online/47-brj-1984/428-day-munson-taught-yankees-pr-a-lesson
  3. Chad Ochoseis wrote: I once read an anecdote about Thurman Munson - supposedly, he once deliberately dropped three third strikes in a game, so that he could throw to first to get the outs, enabling him to pass Carlton Fisk for the AL lead in catcher's assists. I don't know if I believe it - whatever Munson's faults, he never seemed to be the kind of guy who cared about individual records - but I know I read it. I think the tale goes that the press notes for the day noted that Carlton Fisk led the league in assists by a catcher. Munson thought this was a pretty arbitrary thing to praise the guy for, so he spent the day undermining the stat, and (I think) gesturing to the press box each time.
  4. And maybe MLB could come up with a "Family Medical Leave" status — that's the same as bereavement leave in name only, but doesn't lead to any premature punches in the gut when announced.
  5. Yeah, but pom-poms are cool.
  6. Hey, I'm Josh Smoker, and once upon a time I was Alfonso Soriano, sort of. I mean, I was a big-time compensation pick by the Nats when Soriano got signed away by the Cubs. But it didn't work out for me with the Nats, and frankly, I hated it. I DESPISED it. Toiling in the low minors in a crooked outfit like that. I confess, they didn't like me too much either, and I ended up in indy ball. And fuck it, I let it fly. I'm a lefty with high nineties heat, and those mopes couldn't touch my shit. So I'm back in affiliated ball. I played at three levels with the Mets last season, struck out 11 dudes per nine innings, and the Mets wondered what they needed to send defenders out there at all for, and they PUT ME ON A BIG LEAGUE ROSTER. That's right, I'm on the 40. I'm toiling for the 51s, working on my off-speed stuff, and while I got Bastardo and Blevins over my head, the Leathersiches of the world are thinning out, and you can call me Elton because I'm still standing. The world isn't going to wait forever for me to start my big league career, so I'm down here in Vegas pressing my case as hard as I can. I've got a badass closer name, I've got a bug-eyed girl who drives me wild, and I've got Jon Niese's old number. Things are looking up, but how are they going to play out? You be the judge. 7. Blevins getting two strikeouts in 1/3 of an inning. I kind of like that a guy can be credited with a strikeout, even without the "out" part of the play completed. The real-words-mean-what-they-mean part of me doesn't like it, but the stats-fetish part of me digs the opportunity to put up more than the apparent maximum possible number of strikeouts. I wonder if there are similar scoring quirks. If an infielder puts a throw in a first baseman's glove well ahead of the batter-runner, but the first baseman drops it, I don't think the infielder gets the assist (while the team isn't credited with making the out). If a batter hits a ball over the fence, but passes a runner or otherwise makes an out rounding the bases, I don't think he gets a home run (while not being credited with the run or all four bases). But it seems to me that these would be consistent with the spirit of the strikeout-without-an-out rule.
  8. Blake Taylor is floating in the baseball limbo that is extended spring training. He's technically on the Brooklyn Cyclones roster, but I speculate that he may see some time with the Fireflies in the first half of the season.
  9. Accounts suggesting that there was something wrong with the child, but the condition is improving, and he's expected to be released tomorrow.
  10. Look, a lot of people are late bloomers with the power. Like, I dunno, Don F. Mattingly, that's who. I do everything else, and the power... it's coming. Right now, it's coming in Binghamton. Don't believe me? Ask Lucas Duda if he feels my hot, sexy breath on his shoulder. I bet he does! What do you feel? 11. A heart-rending lack of opinions on Paul Sewald, but he's been the hoss of Wally Backman's pen so far for Las Vegas, throwing 5 1/3 innings over four games, yielding but a single run (on a homer), whilst striking out seven and walking but one. Sewald!
  12. Maybe I just like pom-poms. Nothing wrong with my glasses, though.
  13. A 6-0 win behind Matz and a Sunday lineup against an ace pitcher will cure a lot of ills. It was like the baseball equivalent of putting the lime in the coconut.
  14. Good things happen when you bunt your way on. Nice to see them open up against a top starter like Kluber. Confidence boost!
  15. I got six innings this spring. Less than I hoped for, to be frankish. I've given four good years to this system, and that's no small thing when you've already given the same amount back in college. I'm a Pan Am Games vet and I've succeeded everywhere I've been. OK, not the AFL, but that's, like, the season after the season. Phooey on that. I was tired. I'm Paul Sewald. I'm a 10th-round pick from 2012, and I'm a damn consistent relief pitcher, striking out 10.6 every nine innings and walking 1.7. Over my whole career. Know what those numbers say? They say "I'm Speed Racer and I drive real fast; I drive real fast and I'm built to last." So, yeah, I'm off bloodying some noses in Las Vegas. You know how it is. But soon, my call is gonna come. What happens then? You tell me. 16. Like that guy in that movie. The other guy. In that other movie.
  17. Matt Harvey is ... a) fine. fine but not executing. c) hurt. d) feeling the effects of his lifestyle, and learning humility the hard way, like that guy in that movie.
  18. OK, Wrightie. All you. That's OK.
  19. Alejandro, thou art the tying run.
  20. OK, let's finish the comeback.
  21. Negatory x-rays on d'Arnie. No doubt that 'Wecky starts tomorrow, though.
  22. Cabrera seems to be from the jumpy-throwy school of thought. Blows the transfer with too many moving parts.
  23. Well, I get the willies whenever I see the chrome insignia. Chrome insignia + Matt Harvey = stinky, often enough.
  24. I don't stink. Mets don't stink. Not in the eighth inning, they don't.
