  2. Looking him up, it seems like yesterday Volquez was a perennial Red, but he's been a vagabond for over four years.
  3. They've had a pretty stable lineup in recent years. Too bad Volquez is gone (and it was particularly too bad last fall). He was very Redly to my thinking, even with the long hair.

  5. Yeah, how about that? I removed it from the thread, but not from the roster template. Thanks. Will cut.
  6. I missed an update or two while I was trying to catchup on the sooth threads, but we're pretty much back to something resembling normal. Welcome back, deBroom! 7. The best way to guarantee a talented young pitcher makes it is to start out with four of them, right? Well in 2012, there were six of us absolutely knocking 'em dead in Brooklyn. There was Hansel Robles, Luis Cessa, Rainy Lara, Luis Mateo, Julian Hilario, and me. We set 'em up and we shut 'em down. We kicked ass. We took names. It was frankly ridiculous. The New York-Penn League had a 4.27 ERA, but we had a 3.16 figure. The whole staff. The next lowest ERA was 3.30. That's nearly two standard deviations off. That was then, this is now. Hansel is a fixture in the New York bullpen. Good for him. Luis? He went to Detroit in the Cespedes trade, and the Tigers flipped him to the Yankees in the offseason where he's already thrown two innings as a Yankee. He's dead to me. Rainy stopped getting strikeouts at the upper levels, and has subsequently been giving up too many hits. Vegas, you know? Luis? He had an unfortunate run-in with Tommy John, and is trying to re-invent himself as a reliever. Hilario hasn't been a good pitcher since 2013, and may have run out the string. What can I say, he was the least of us back in the day. Don't tell him I said so. Then there's me. I've made the Mets 40-man roster. I've started three games so far with Las Vegas and I've only given up three runs. I'm right in the picture! And it's a very competitive picture! I'm Gabriel Ynoa, and I'm the last man standing. By which, I mean that I'm the last 2012 Cyclone with a fighting chance to crack that vaunted Mets rotation. I think I'm right where I need to be. But you know how this goes... what do you think? Thank you for playing Soothsaying for Sixteen, all you have played and continue to play.
  8. Playing the Braves a bunch of times can make first-placers out of anybubby. Bring 'em on.
  9. Mets/X Connections: Exene Cervenka was formerly married to MLBS Viggo Mortensen. In Nintendo's Ken Griffey Presents Major League Baseball, the game didn't have license to use real players' names. The electronic players they created were based on real players, but they were named based on a different code for each team. The Dodger players were each given a name of a semi-famous LA punk. Future Met Jos Offerman was named "Exene Cervenka. Future Met Mike Piazza was named "John Doe." Former Met Brett Butler was named "DJ Bonebreak." [*]In 1985, the Mets played in an epic game on the fourth of July. In 1987, X released an epic single titled "The Fourth of July." [*]Famous people born in Decuatur, IL: Del Unser, Jeff Innis, Kevin Roberson, and John Doe.
  10. Nicco Blank, most likely to get busted for stealing a car.
  11. Holy shit, Gary is schooling Keith about Exene Cervenka, John Doe, and X. Trying to turn Keith on to "Fourth of July."
  12. Coming to the plate with a swiss-cheese bat is almost always a bad idea, Eric.
  13. We had a thread about 'em. I can't find it. Already, the brand new Columbia Fireflies have their first no-hitter, a combined jobbio by Thomas McIlraith (six innings, two walks, six strikeouts), Alex Palsha (two innings, four strikeouts) and Johnny Magliozzi (one inning, three strikeouts, PHWAM!), ably assisted the whole way by catcher José Garcia. You have to like how the dominance increased late in the game. Click the link for interview snippets from the principles and the manager José Leger. It came in just their third game! More generally, the Lightning Bugs sit in second place among the seven teams in the South Atlantic League's southern division, at 10-7, two games behind the detestable Charleston River Dogs. Studding up for the Flies so far are second baseman Vinny Siena (who didn't go to Siena, but followed LJ Mazzilli at UConn), hitting .356; and third baseman David Thompson, with eight extra-base hits and 18 RBI. Starting pitcher P.J. Conlon has gone 2-0 in his three starts, with a 1.08 ERA. Closer Tyler Bashlor has struck out 10 in 8.0 innings and posted a 1.13 ERA, while saving two games. This team's Tyler factor is decidedly high. 14. 5 2/3 innings and 82 pitches for deDaddio. Short leash, Terry, but I see what you're doing.
  15. And Duda gets it done with the deep fly.
  16. No, he's coming right after him.
  17. Braves go to the pen against Duda, but don't go to any of their three lefties. Nor do they walk him. I'm guessing this is a pitch-around.
  18. Aaron Blair's family thinks he did just great.
  19. Not a lot of game followage here, as we are tied in the sixth but have first-and-third with one out. And Confort bounces one over the wall for a double! Two-one, Mets. Wilmer needs to get untracked. Somebody help the Wil.
  20. I don't think he was fired for making a controversial or political point. (The Network used to have Rush Limbaugh on the payroll.) I think he was fired for making a political point in a nasty dehumanizing manner, one that was embarrassing to his employer. As locked in as folks are to their political sides, there IS a way to talk about an issue like the North Carolina law. That it's also a gross departure from the position of his employer is certain relevant, but it could be manageable. I tend to think that satire has way too outsized a place in our culture and in our discourse, and we've gravitated toward thinking that anything satirical is credible. Curt Schilling sure has. I've had a co-worker (VP level) forced to resign for far smaller transgressions in his social media life. (Come to think of it, I may get in trouble myself for a post from yesterday.)
  21. Lose the goatee-n-stache, Logan. You're too handsome to be looking like Tim Byrdak.
  22. McDowell to Weber: "Why don't try the curve, 'kay?"
  23. Mets knocking Weber out of the league.
  24. This guy does not look like a big league pitcher. Everything straight and up.
