dinosaur jesus wrote: The thing about game scores is, they were never meant to measure how well someone pitched, but how impressive he was. A shutout's a shutout; if you don't allow any runs, it doesn't matter if you struck out 20 and allowed 1 hit, or allowed 12 hits and didn't strike out anybody. But the first game is definitely more impressive than the second. It's definitely biased in favor of more recent pitchers, as far as the highest individual game scores. But overall it's actually biased the other way, since pitcher's used to pitch more innings. So deGrom's game is better (game score-wise) than Seaver's because a complete game is more impressive in 2016 than in 1969?

I tended to think building an article by starting with testimony offered on his family's behalf in a lawsuit and taking it a face value was sort of irresponsible. Cole was a baseball player with a halfback's body and if I remember, the thinking of the time was that, if things broke nicely for the Mets, they had a guy with a Kirby Puckett-type skill set. But he was widely ranked as the Mets second-best outfield prospect at the time, and their top outfield prospect was Alex Escobar. So Cole was probably a long way from a sure thing.

I lefthand think pinch hitter/part-time starter/defensive specialist is a fine role for Loney. It'd mean having a guy with only one position on your bench, and that's a luxury, but it'd only be for about three weeks until the rosters expand. And Kelly Johnson becomes your fifth outfielder instead of your sixth infielder. And if nobody else gets hurt (or traded), it'd mean folks get their wish of a De Aza-free roster.

I'll again vote no.

Didn't you go for Syndergaard for Ian Desmond back in the day? The team traded like 19 prospects for big league talent last season. They're going to have to pull up on the stick eventually. I think I can live with the team not having a big name #5 starter for a bit. GIVE NIMMO A CHANCE!

To look at this objectively, however, I hesitate to place this so high. I didn't know there were multiple ways to calculate Game Scores, but Baseball-Reference gives him a 91 and not a 97. I'm not sure how or why his 9-inning/0-run/1-hit/1-walk/7-strikeout performance should outrank Tom Seaver's 9-inning/0-run/1-hit/0-walk/11-strikeout performance of July 9, 1969, for instance.

They still have a "recent four-game losing streak." Heh-heh.

I'd be hesitant to make too much of Céspedes' comments.

Almost seems like it was conceived in a secret Wilponian lab somewhere — designed to make De Aza haters explode! But that isn't, as you say, all. No sir. We also have a rehab assignment and a new teenager, the youngest Met in the system (as we move close to having our first Met of the nu millennium). Best description of Greg Luzinski: "Such a bad outfielder that Lonnie Smith was used as his defensive replacement." And they won the World Series that way!

Cool. I've enjoyed Rick Foucheux and Naomi Jacobson in the past. My wife trained with Foucheux.

Brilliant.

You are now entering Complete Gamesville, Population 0.

Welcome to the ninth inning, Jacob deGrom.

There's some more two-out hitting. All five runs have come with two outs, some after there was two out and none on.

Good time to get Cspy out of the game.

No way. They're two-out warriors. That said, BiFL. Meanwhile Cody Asche damn near hit a pop-up that turned into a homer.

So when did deGrom get the hair bobbed? 'Cuz it's working for him.

deGrom can be reasonably said to be rolling.

That double steal may just take the bat out of Cspedes' hands. OE: Yup.

The Mets are two-out RBI kings. Scoring a run after having two outs, the bases empty, and the pitcher up is found money. And now they have two on for Cspedes, so they may not be done yet.

If they have faith he can perform, I have no problem forgiving his alleged trashing, which was really just forcing himself to say that he's happy to join the Pirates.

Bobby Valentine fancies himself an energetic leader, realizes he's an extinct fossil.

This team record had been in place a few years. All-Time Mets Steal Leaders 1) Jose Reyes: 371 2) Mookie Wilson: 281 3) Howard Johnson: 202 4) David Wright: 196 5) Darryl Strawberry: 191 6) Lee Mazzilli: 152 7) Lenny Dykstra: 116 8) Bud Harrelson: 115 9) Wally Backman: 106 10) Roger Cedeno: 105
