Jim Beauchamp and Félix Millan.

I'm a big backer of Schilling, asshole though he may be.

That's the two teenage shortstops whose signings the Mets announced on July 2: Andres Giminez and Gregory Guerrero, and subsequently shipped off to the Dominican Summer League. Guerrero merely held his own. I mean, he put up an unimpressive .611 OPS, but he was the next-youngest active guy in the system. But Giminez, who turned 18 on September 4, simply lapped the competition, throwing up a .992 OPS, despite being among the youngest himself. That was good for fifth-best among the hundreds of players in the DSL, and the guys who did better were two or three years older. His numbers even included three homers, at a power-starved level. I'm guessing he jumps all the way to Brooklyn next season, with Guerrero at Kingsport or the GCL.

If we go by 15 total ballots cast, the Crane Pool has elected three Hall-of-Famers: CandidateVotesPCTVladimir Guerrero15100%Jeff Bagwell1387%Tim Raines1387%Edgar Martinez1067%Ivan Rodriguez1067%Manny Ramirez853%Barry Bonds747%Trevor Hoffman747%Roger Clemens640%Jeff Kent533%Curt Schilling533%Larry Walker533%Mike Mussina320%Lee Smith320%Billy Wagner213%Fred McGriff17%Gary Sheffield17%Sammy Sosa17%Matt Stairs17%Casey Blake00%Pat Burrell00%Orlando Cabrera00%Mike Cameron00%J.D. So, how many have submitted ballots here. I'm one. The problem with these polls is we don't get a denominator. I guess we can just use the highest number as a denominator. Or put up polls in which the first selection is "Check this box if you are voting." Stinks.

Mets retain Teuf Stuff, naming him roving minor league instructor and team ambassador. Mookie Wilson knows your pain.

Long-term contracts to Jayson Werth and Ryan Zimmerman are a big part of the anchor keeping the Nats from going over the top these last few. I'd be surprised if they came in with seven years for Céspedes, but I'd imagine there'd be buyer's remorse almost immediately. Plus, they'd be forced to dump Werth for pennies on the dollar or move Harper to center. Plus, they haven't locked up Harper yet. They aren't the team I fear. San Francisco, maybe.

Man, that's terrible. Great that they went back to Waco and lived out their lives where they went to high school.

I suspect as much too. With regard to the above, I understand that going back to a free market is a pretty radical departure from the place we are now. But I'm hoping the game can turn in a more just direction, and I think saying "thus far and no further" on labor price controls is a terrific first step, and I think wealthy pros standing up for poor amateurs is great.

And it's really not constructed the way it's always been. It just seems to have been this way during our living memory. But even then, the changes over the last few decades have been dramatic. It's just that the men in charge insist that the changes have been progressive and benevolent and regulated for the best. For the common good. I just don't think that most of them are, but rather are beneficial for a small club of billionaires. And I'm certainly going to bat against the idea of a plan that protects the money of this club by screwing poor but talented teenagers in foreign countries out of the leverage their talent can buy them and their families. That's not progressive, and it's not protecting competition. It's assaulting it.

Well, limiting American baseball to 30 relevant baseball teams is also anti-competitive. We really should have hundreds, and back when America was named "the American past-time," we did.

And Hahnie being Hahnie has launched him into second place. Ralph Branca, beloved Brooklyn righthander, figure on the wrong side of one of history's most celebrated homers, and Bobby Valentine's father-in-law, passes at the age of 90. [tweet] [/tweet]

Centerfield wrote: Out of curiosity, do you also oppose clubs having player control for 6 years? Yes. If clubs want to control a player for six years, they should get six-year guaranteed contracts. I would disagree that competitive balance is essential to make the sport compelling. Nothing is more compelling than little guys finding their game and taking out the big guys. But a fair marketplace would take away the shackles of the anti-trust exemption. There would be no such thing as small market teams or large market teams because there would be no such thing as protected markets, which are also an offense to true competition. British football teams cluster around London, so the teams from the smaller markets ("Go, Sheffield Wednesday!") are at no disadvantage because the larger markets are fragmented. Same with Japanese baseball teams, clustered around Tokyo. Truly competitive American baseball should have six teams in the New York area, and three in New England, making being the only team in Pittsburgh or Kansas City a pretty good deal.

Whether creating a competitive balance or controlling costs (yup), both are anti-competitive behavior that, in any other industry, would lead to an indictment from the Federal Trade Commission. Duan, I believe put it best: marketplace competition is the gospel the US preaches to the world, but we run our sports leagues as cartels, which has the rest of the world scratching their heads, preserving the marketplace for the haves, locking-out the have-nots.

Yes, indeed, Mr. Now-Tied-for-Fourth, but I must insist that we name positions as well as players and years with our answers! This will come into play! I covet nothing of the Yankees. The draft is anti-competitive and un-American, and it should offend anybody who thinks about it. Whether it blesses them or curses the Yankees in particular isn't really relevant.

Well, it's two years. 730 days in which something can go terribly wrong instead of 1876. And well, it's a plan B. I'm guessing the Mets are willing to go for five years, if push comes shove, but how hard and how high relative to the other suitors is the rub.

I think it's great that the union is standing against an international draft. The union has rarely stood for the rights of amateurs getting screwed when signing their first contract. Keep punching back. Take out the bonus limits. Chip away that the domestic draft. GO-GO-GO!

Creepy and sick and somehow, a second Rougned Odor in existence. And he's apparently a sex criminal.

Nice job, evuhbody! But I have half a mind to shut down this board and giving the valuable prize to 86-Dreamer, who has not only pulled off the unlikely feat of shooting exactly once in each round and hitting on all three shots, but also would be festooned with degree-of-difficulty points, had such a scoring mechanism been woven into the contest, for coming up with JOHN VALENTIN! Give that man a Schaefer! JOHN VALENTIN! Mets have a PR nightmare in Jeurys Familia. The Phillies have one in Pistachio Girl.
