  1. Yup. Take that, fates! —Jay Bruce

  3. And down goes Syndergaard. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: It's like he learned nothing from Harvey's pride-goeth-before-a-fall episodes.
  4. Three-run deficit? Definitely recoverable. The big mistake was walking Harper.
  5. It's a Reynolds Day. 6. This was Casey Stengel's philosophy, by the way. If a player you know can play isn't playing well, there's thinking that says you stick with him, keep him in the lineup/the rotation/his role. Your loyalty to him would be rewarded in his increased confidence, and that guy would be ready to go to war for you down the stretch. Casey had none of that. He believed a manager's loyalty to his players was important. But he exercised it differently. He thought you did what you needed to do to get the win, and so show loyalty to the other 24 players who prepared and worked to win the game that day. The 25th guy? Tough noogies if he had to pull you or bench you or pinch-hit for you? But how down can you feel? Your team won, didn't they? Through much of the fifties, is rotation was often two locks—Ford and Reynolds, perphaps—and two or maybe three guys who happened to be the hot hand at any given moment. His middle infield was an interchangeable as lego blocks, and first and third and one of the outfield slots were often in flux. Getting comfortable with the flux is a good trait.

  8. That's great. I always thought if you used relief aces the way they should optimally be used: putting them in tie games in the eighth or sometimes as early as the seventh, the best would be getting 20 wins to go with 20 saves.
  9. Just tuned in to the Las Vegas game and one pitch later, Amed Rosario hit his first AAA homer.
  10. I don't know what is to become of tomorrow, but tonight ... tonight we tango.
  11. It was about this time last year that Michael Conforto peaked. Having gotten off to a hot start in April, he moved up in a few weeks from the sixth slot in the batting order to the the third. He maintained a hot pace until the end of April, and then started rolling down the back end of the hill—and the lineup—come May. Ideally, when the Mets get their players back, he still looks like a potential #3 hitter in a good lineup, and Céspedes hitting fourth between him and Bruce is an appealing thought. Do you try and ease him back into that slot in the lineup, or do you just thank goodness that he's found himself and leave him right where he is?
  12. Just awesome. Feels great to love baseball again.
  13. Howie Rose: "JER-ris"
  14. If he keeps hitting like that, the crosshairs are going to seriously shift over to Granderson.
  15. We should have better pinch-hit options than René Rivera. No offense, René. Love ya.
  16. This game needs a whole lot of Josh Smoker.
  17. All three pitches to Ryan Zimbalist were middle in. It was not a healthy place to be pitching.
  18. Addy Reed. Would have liked to stick with Blevvy a few mo' batters. And Kapowie.
  19. Should've double-switched Blevvy into the game, so he could stick around and face Murphy.
  20. T.J. is somehow keeping his head above water.
  21. Let Rubbles come out for a second inning!
  22. Walker, I appreciate your commitment to testing Murphy's glove, but ...
  23. This is weird. A guy comes to a new position in the middle of a crisis, more or less does fine, earns the team's faith, but develops a crippling self-confidence issue in year two. Sort of like Murphy in left, way back when.
  24. I think we should keep Conforto.
