  1. Yeah, can you imagine what Ricky and the boys could do with this song at The Tropicana? I don't know if you realized that parallel when you made that comment, but amazingly, this song also features the ever-innovative Steve Gadd on drums.
  2. If he's a top 10% hitter (and I'm curious where that comes from), he's a top 10% hitter that's rotting on the bench while earning beaucoup $$.
  3. That's the first official statement I heard confirming Céspedes was hurt.
  4. Yeah, I don't like the erase-the-guy-forever rule. Guys with 50% or more should return to the ballot the next year, guys with 30-49.9% should return in two, etc. So maybe five years later, voters would get a new chance to look at Lofton, or my favorite one-and-done snub, Lou Whitaker.
  5. If Lugo was to go, the Mets would be looking for somebody just like him in return — a guy who can hold down a rotation spot until the featured starters return, who can continue in that role if the rotation doesn't reform, who can plug into the bullpen if it does. Basically, they're a team at the back end of the league's ERA rankings who can't afford to be shedding young controllable pitching that is modestly effective currently with the potential to improve or break through to increased effectiveness. As for Reyes, the plan seems to be to keep him around to continue mentoring Rosario. So I wouldn't be preparing to lose him. It's not unthinkable that he could be back in 2018.
  6. So, was Céspedes' exit purely about double switching, or was Terry concerned about his legs after he circled the bases? I'm happy to see them sneak back into the fringes of the race, but realistically, if it takes Little League homers to beat the floundering Pads after they've already started selling off parts and are throwing pitchers at us who are just up from AA and A+ ... well, it's hard to project sustainability from that.
  7. Reyes' nice little run suddenly brings Barry Bonds into play. All those guys ahead of him below are Hall-of Famers, except Stovey, who probably should be. Amazingly, we lack stolen base data for Stovey's first six seasons, so he likely had far more than is recorded. Stolen Bases, All-Time Dudes 33) Barry Bonds: 514 José Reyes Projected to End of Season: 509.49 T34) Fred Clarke: 509 T34) Harry Stovey: 509 36) Ichiro Suzuki: 508 37) Luis Aparicio: 506 38) Paul Molitor: 504 39) José Reyes: 501 T40) Willie Keeler: 495 T40) Clyde Milan: 495 =#FF8000]José Reyes at Start of the Season: 488 42) Omar Moreno: 487
  8. Both Wild Card leaders lose today, so the Mets gain a game on each. Giants helping us out by TCB against Pittsburgh, too.
  9. Another night in San Diego, another poopy-pants save.
  10. If this is ultimately a win, I wanna see, "Rivera, T.J.: S (1)" in the boxscore.

  12. This may be Seaweed's best game of the season.
  13. Taking the two-run lead on some
  14. Don't you walk Myers in that situ ... oh, right, Sanchez.
  15. Grandy hits a Texas Leaguer off the Texas Leaguer!!

Ronnie has previously identified Hodges as the guy who'd spit tobacco juice on all over his new shoes. Doesn't seem too anxious here about fingering the anti-reader. In that book 'The Arm' that was out a couple years ago on the issues surrounding the UCL and TJ surgery, one of the pitchers featured because he was going in for his second go-around on TJ was reliever Todd Coffey (kind of an Edgin looking character who used to sprint in from the pen when summoned). Anyway, he comes across as this same kind of dumb jock by telling his daughter that if a book's any good it'll get made into a TV show or movie so there's no reason to read it. You might think that attitude had improved a bit since Ronnie's time but apparently not. Other guesses: Ellis Valentine, Mike Torrez. Would this be 1982 or 1983?
  18. Let's send this guy back to the Texas League NOW!!!!
  19. Well, this has been a stinko inning.

  21. Padres must be desperate if they're running there. That guy was a dead duck. Yeah, go ahead and use your challenge on that one, Andy Green.
  22. Hey, check it out! Oskcar's old secretary Myrna is sitting behind home plate!
