  1. Well, I count 170 living former big league managers. That should be accurate, give or take a few. That number should go up by about five after the season ends. Amazing to find among them was original 1962 Mets coach Solly Hemus, still going strong at 94. Solly managed the Cardinals in 1959 and 1960 before being let go half way through 1961, and has been waiting 56 years for another shot.

  4. Stanton seemed to pull up and catch his breath halfway through the pursuit of that fly.
  5. Please don't go to Robles.
  6. Welp. There goes that lead.

  8. I thought Aoki's double-flap helmet was only going to be for a day or two, but here he is weeks later, and he's still rockin' it. He's not even a switch hitter.
  9. A cooler managerial name than Moose Stubing? ¡Viva El Tappe! When the managing career ended, he could have made it big as a Mexican wrestler.
  10. What a plate appearance here by Laggy.
  11. Power and OBP. He's transitioning to old-guy skillz.
  12. Good inning, Jeurys. [youtube:ceks9eap]Lrle0x_DHBM[/youtube:ceks9eap]
  13. Familia again? How about getting McGowan some work?
  14. Hard-hit balls that whole inning.
  15. DEAD FUCKIN' CENTER for d'Arnaud.
  16. It seems like the Reyes we used to have liked the low pitch, especially batting lefthanded. This guy we have now likes it up.
  17. Are they really gonna pull Lugissimo after five? Are they saving him for the post-season?
  18. I'll take the under on the six homers.

What's the material difference between "retread" and experienced? If this is about having lost all faith in Sandy Alderson and wanting somebody who goes against him, isn't any hire he makes something to oppose?
  20. For an Alderson puppet, Geren sure didn't feel any strings stopping him from jumping to another organization for the same job.
  21. Washington Nationals: Alejandro De Aza, Daniel Murphy, Ollie Perez. I'm guessing ADA won't(?) make the post-season roster. Mike Maddux, Met from the glorious 1993-94 era, coaches the pitchers. Chicago Cubs: René Rivera is one of four backup catchers for the Cubs. I'm thinking his veteran's veteraniness gets him a 50-50 chance to make a post-season roster. Los Angeles Dodgers: Hirsute Justin Turner is joined by Gentleman Curtis Granderson. Randolph-era utilityman Chris Woodward coaches third. That's all fine, but if you root for them, you are rooting for Face Buttley. Arizona Backs-of Diamond: No former Mets are on the roster, but Dave Magadan and Ron Gardenhose are part of the coaching corps, as if that could make up for Fernando Rodney. Colorado Rockies: This isn't a very Metly team. Boston Red Sox: 2011 punching bag Blaine Boyer is working out of the pen. Hit-and-miss Addison Reed joins him there, and they occasionally go out for a meal and talk Mets with reserve outfielder Chris Young and assistant pitching coach Brian Bannister. New York Yankees: Feh. Cleveland Indians: Well traveled sidearmer Joe Smith, once converted from catcher as a Met property, currently brings his mercenary arm to bear for the Indians. They also boast of outfielder Jay Bruce, first base coach Sandy Alomar Jr., staff assistant Scott Atchison, and currently have my heart, I think. Houston Astros: Tyler Clippard deploys his goggles for his fiftieth team in the last three years. Juan Centeno sits at the bottom of the catching depth chart, but could see post-season action because one never knows. Colin McHugh missed the first half of the season, but seems to be rounding into form. Carlos Beltran is DH'ing and looks to be making his last magical trip to the post-season. Former Mets personalities-of-one-capacity-or-another Dave Hudgens, Brent Strom, Gary Pettis, and Carlos Munoz all answer when the coaches are called to order. Milwaukee and St. Louis are still trying to grab that second Wild Card spot from Colorado, while that spot is wide open in the American League, so root for the Mets you want to root for. Just don't ignore the Scott Atchison factor.
  22. But Mookie.
  23. Oh, I think the Wilps want to do fan-pleasing moves. I just think the means by which they listen to fans and the times they choose to acquiesce to fans have been ill-considered. So they alternate between kowtowing to the dopiest fans and ignoring all fans altogether. I think Alderson has been a benevolently detached figure in this regard.
  24. I imagine Pedro Lopez would consider himself to be on the inside of Alderson's circle. He predates Alderson, but Sandy's been signing off on him long enough. He also has seen more of Smith and Rosario and Nimmo than any Mets manager.
  25. So far, I've found 165 living ex-managers. Interviews are going to take a while.
