Yeah, that rule seems to be written to easy to work around. It's more of a guidance, I thinks. Hey, Borenstein just made a catch!

The good news is that Tim Tebow is on the "extras" list for today's game.

Hi, I'm Mickey F. Callaway. I'm a pitching coach-turned-manager. I've never held the big chair outside of a Division III college program. I'm either a breath of fresh fucking air or in way over my head, depending on where you are in your med cycle. I'm promising a pro-active approach to caring for pitchers, accountability, and lots of love. You've never seen love like this. (This obviously doesn't apply to sharks.) How's it all gonna shake out? I don't want the record, necessarily, because only so much is within the scope of a manager's control, but how are my efforts going to be manifest for better or for worse in 2018? Jacob deGrom Injury/Malady: Lower-back stiffness. Current Activity: A "throwing progression" and a minor league contract for A.J. Griffin. Prognosis: Day-to-day. Yoenis Céspedes Injury/Malady: Mild shoulder soreness. Current Activity: Rest. Prognosis: Day-to-day. Dominic Smith Injury/Malady: Strained quad, confirmed by MRI (stands for "Muscle Rip Indicator)." Current Activity: Gradual return to baseball activity. Prognosis: Sounds like at least a week.

I was thinking that too. And then I left it in there wondering if somebody might point it out if I had it wrong. Swapping teams and numbers and kind of swapping faces too, I guess. Addison usually looked a little dorkier than that but I guess it's him.

You guys have some very nihilistic expectations of me.

I'm not sure. Maybe he's a mason. https://gordondonovan.photoshelter.com/gallery-image/April-29-2017-Threshers-vs-Mets/G0000pGVTyrcAnBk/I00008Q671KuO9P0

Well, the deal has a hefty vesting option that could escalate it to two years and $16.5 million.

A.J. Griffin is a puzzler. The Vegas rotation to open the sason seemed to be Robert Gsellman / Seth Lugo / Corey Oswalt / Mickey Jannis / P.J. Conlon, so he initially slots in as the Vegas swing-man unless/until attrition kicks on or he knocks Oswalt or somebody to the pen. I wonder if they've had a week to look at the condition of the back end of their rotation, and got the idea that they will be calling on Vegas' starters sooner, rather than later. A.J. Griffin fact: The A.J. stands for Arthur Joseph, while the A.J. in A.J. Ramos' name stands for Alejandro. A.J. Griffin fact #2: A.J. hails from El Cajon, CA, the same town that produced Grant "The Dread Pirate" Roberts. The town name sounds like it means "The Testicle," but in fact means "The Drawer." At 35, Jonathan Albaladejo rebounds back to the Atlantic League having tossed up an almost respectable 4.50 ERA during 52 emergency fill-in innings for Las Vegas. I'm Jamie Callahan, and I'm the first of three arms that came over from Boston in the Addison Reed deal. In fact, of all the pitching the Mets piled up down the stretch last summer, me and Incrediboy are the only ones to have appeared for the big team so far. Don't be surprised, be ready or something. Yeah, it ain't September, and most everybody is healthy, so to stay a Met, I have a fight on my hands, but it's like that. I'm a former second round draft choice by the mighty Boston Red Sox, went to camp last year with them in fact, and I like the hard stuff, using the fastball to set up the splitter and the slider. I also like to work with the tongue outside my mouth. So David Wright is on the field in spirit. That's what I bring to the table, now what's the table going to look like in 2018? The heat and the tongue, which, yeah, impeded my speech a little bit. [youtube:48ta2mr3]OL7mHzYQU78[/youtube:48ta2mr3] But so what? My heater's gonna to do the talking for me, right?

They battled like battle bots, but go down with the bases loaded and the Brooklyn Cyclones' first baseman at the plate.

Crazy finish here as the springtime Mets are in a 7-7 tie with the springtime version of the World Champs.

What kind of Spring Training name is Mike Hauschild? Shouldn't that be "Housechild" or "Hauskind"? That's sort of language mashup may fly in AAA, but it's not gonna cut it in the bigs.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: Costas has become insufferable? I haven't heard much of him or McCarver lately to have any opinion on their insufferability, but I've certainly heard that a lot about McCarver. I don't know that I've heard it about Costas. Really? It seemed I had tolerated him a lot more than most. He lost a great many New York Mets fans when he mocked the team for celebrating a walkoff victory back in 2013.

Ron Darling moonlights with the MLB Channel. It'd be cool if we get Cliff Floyd. Not so much if we get Bob Costas. Once upon a time, Costas was rivaled only by Tim McCarver among the most independent and intellectual baseball broadcasters. How they both became insufferable is a story and a half.

Man, that sure gets the pitching staff's salad factor back up. With deGrom and McGowan shedding their locks, things were getting dangerously straight-laced. A.J. instantly looks like the Met most likely to have an LSD lab in his basement.

Right. "Planning is everything; the plan is nothing," Eisenhower was quoted as saying. I think the idea behind the quote was that once the chaos of battle ensues, even the best plan will fall apart, and true planning involves preparing your troops to be ready for that, and even expect that, and know how to pivot confidently when that happens. The layout now allows them a lot of space to be nimble. Where I see a small hole hole in that space though is from the righthanded side. If Flores doesn't bounce back, T.J. won't be ready until mid-season, and maybe neither Gonzalez nor Smith get it done against lefties. But that's a lot of IFs. Maybe that's where Wright comes in. Maybe Evans. Maybe sometime in his tenure, Frazier sees some time at first. ROOM TO BE NIMBLE. It's a workable motto.

It's the Twins who signed him, no? I kind of like what the Mets are doing. They could get caught with their pants down at first, but I see the sense. I feel good about them getting more production at first than the Twins. My fear isn't that Gonzalez is washed up or that Smith isn't ready. My fear is that Flores will lose his mojo after 2017 ended with him fouling a ball into his face and smashing his nose. I'm flinching at my desk just recalling it six months later. I'll be watching him closely this spring to see if there are any lingering effects.

A lockup of aces, but Mets otherwise traveling light. Always nice to look at the standings and savor a 1986ian .667 winning percentage. Céspedes is the easy choice for PotG (2-3 with a three-run homer), but take a long, thoughtful look at the Rafael Montero's line (two innings, no baserunners, four strikeouts). In the great tradition of Mickey Mantle and Eliott Maddox, Tebow's ankle injury is the result of an unfortunate interaction with a sprinkler head.

Jack Hamlton, who joined the big leagues the same year as the Mets in 1962, became the Mets' swingman in 1966, and ultimately moved on (for Nick Wilhite) as part of Bing Devine's ongoing selloff in 1967, has died. He sadly remains etched in history as the man who derailed the career of budding star Tony Conigliaro, hitting him with a pitch that compromised the eyesight of the Red Sox shortstop. He died in Branson, MO, which hopes to someday displace Hilton Head and The Villages as the final residence of America. [fimg=400:egqiia4u]https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w8ShXsC7VYg/ULhT7SlWIxI/AAAAAAAAjwU/nEu7ozmUqFE/s1600/jack+mamilton+(2).jpg[/fimg:egqiia4u] In retirement, Jack plied his trade as a Branson restauranteur. I believe his joint — Pizzazz (158 Pointe Royale Dr, Branson West, Branson, MO 65616-3406) — has closed, but I'm sure you can do a drive-by on your next tour of Mets shrines.

Dominic Smith is suffering from a strained right quad, almost certainly sustained on that dynamite stretch he performed yesterday. He has an MRI (which stands for "a Met is Really Injured") scheduled. Also Juan Lagares: strained lefty hammy, day-to-day. Tim Tebow: sprained ankle, day to day, taking batting practice. Jay Bruce: plantar fasciitis, day to day. Longer-Term Dudes Michael Conforto: dislocated shoulder, aiming for May 1, hitting against soft-toss pitching. T.J. Rivera: torn UCL and Tommy John surgery, aiming for the second half, should begin throwing shortly. David Wright: spinal stenosis, disc fusion surgery, rotator cuff surgery, actively rehabbing, allegedly back to his playing weight, return is anybody's guess.

Yoenis Céspedes is breaking the seal on 2018, presumably batting second to get him a better chance at a third trip to the plate.
