Fixed. Sheesh. How did that become unpublished, man?

Can't figure out what's wrong.

Terrific seven-pitch first inning by 'Gaard. Nimmo takes the HbP from Martinez, who is starting off a little wild.

I figured it was honoring Rusty.

Hate to see them empty seats for the ceremonies, man.

Great to see Bill Shea's wreath out there.

Oh, dear.

Keef sat with the media this morning to remember Rusty. I posted it to the Crane Pool FB page. Tough but worthy watch. (wolf beat me)

I wonder if Washington will see fit to honor him in some way also.

Whoah. I think I didn't even look past #7.

That crazy Mickey confounding tradition and batting what looks like a cleanup hitter second, and what looks like a two-hole hitter cleanup. Also breaking a streak of three opening day starts for d'Arnaud. Mike Matheny has a surprise of his own, starting José Martinez at first, moving Carpenter across the diamond to third, and leaving Jedd Gyorko on the bench. A great apple polisher. The ideal of what a ballplayer-citizen could be.

I've been taking some leave. It's me and the Mets today.

No tribute seems enough. My first clear baseball memory is him wrecking the his shoulder smashing into the wall in right in the 1973 post-season, and throwing underhand later in the series.

Woo-hoo for Phil Evans. Good for him. Who doesn't root for a 15th round draft choice making his first opening day roster? I'll tell you who. The born-a-Mets-fan New Yorker undrafted free agent whose job that was before he Evans and Tommy John conspired to steal my thunder. I'm T.J. Rivera, and I'm an infielder/outfielder who has inexplicably been felled by a pitching injury. The timetable of recovery may be shorter for non-pitchers, but I'm expected to miss at least a third of the season, and then there's rehab, and then there's waiting for an opportunity to open up. An opportunity that I had waited for for years, and successfully seized, before my UCL went rippedy-rip. T.J. It stands for Tommy John. Bittter? A little, man. But the future is still out there. What does it look like? You tell me. And his jumps from third to the outfield. The shorty stop is Elvis Andrus.

Looks like the Evans activation hasn't been officially transacted yet, but certainly all sign point to it being a fait accompli. Phil deserves a lot of credit, being removed from the roster, but coming to camp with a lot of his excess weight shed, and beating out several guys who were on the roster (Cecchini, Smith, Guillorme), at least one latecomer (Brentz), and a versatile vet (Kelly), to say nothing of the gaggle of pitchers who were vying for his spot. I'll change his number tomorrow. 28 is great, although it'd be fun if he wore 6 so the seven people who own a Nick Evans jersey could get new life out of it. The Pirates are getting killed at the waiver wire. Jack Leathersich both got claimed by Cleveland, who also reclaimed Rule V pick Jordan Milbrath.

Battered Bastards of Baseball Crane Pool action here.

My guess is that, at least half the time, they were doing something far dumber than cleaning the gun. Barney Fife stuff. Practicing their quick-draw, juggling, posing in front of the mirror. As far as death, there are certainly cases of handgun suicides where somebody dresses the scene to make it look like a gun-cleaning accident, either to spare the family further grief or to collect on insurance.

Surely, the Cardinals have announced Martinez for the opening day bump, no?

I can't speak to football, but yeah, he totally did.

The more I check this guy out, the more I realize that Bryce may be the best example of the contemporary American-born ballplayer out there. Beard, church, fishing, hunting, golf, tattoos, trucks, Republicans, power, whiffs, and shooting himself in the leg. Plus, his name is Bryce. Marrying a fellow jock instead of a minor league blondie is the one place he's deviated from the program.
