Plawecki, my eyeballs, watching the slow-mo replay, the three guys in the booth, Jeep PitchCast, and GameDay all suggest Kevin got screwed. Ideally we have a pinch-hitter for McNeil.

Damn, Stu likes the low strike.

Do it for Wahl-E!

Nice to hear the booth throw the Jeep Pitchcast under the bus.

Slow thread. Slow team. Let's go, McNeilio. You ain't in the hit column yet tonight.

Pathetic? It's the best offensive line in Mets history!

Also coming home is the Mets' long-lost thirdbaseman. Well, the other Mets' long-lost thirdbaseman. I see plenty that could be counted on to be 2019 bullpen contributors. I don't see any that necessarily will, but guarantees aren't gonna come, especially with relievers. The key to a strong bullpen is a strong (and healthy) rotation.

The Mets limp home from a brutal beating in Washington to take on the second place Atlanta Braves, sitting only a half game out of first. The Mets somehow retain joint possession of fourth place, but remain a discouraging 36 1/2 net games off the division pace. Worry not, however. The Mets are poised to unleash Jason Vargas. And that's never a pleasant thought for the opposition. Mike full-tin-EV-ich goes for the Georgians. [youtube:uo52hm9k]-sxUX3CNjmg[/youtube:uo52hm9k]

Yup, Newcomb, and then True-Yankee Sonny Gray, pretty much losing his job and his reputation on the same night.

I wonder who are the low-level saps working at MLB that are going to be spending the next few weeks 24-7 going through the Twitter accounts of current, former, and future big-leaguers. I'm not sure how, after what happened to Hader, that four other guys have been outed as having similar skeletons in the closet. Dudes, clean out your closets. Current or former Met most likely to have been tweeting vile shit when he was 17? Gotta be Harvey, right?

Temptation is also there to think of him as a guy who can slot into any of three positions as you pivot to respond to changing circumstances. I suppose he'd be tempting as a thirdbaseman who can help out at first, but he's a bad bet as a secondbaseman (and never was a particularly good bet there to begin with). But even as just a corner infielder, Josh Donaldson is probably more appealing, and he's hurt too. Nonetheless, there's a lot to learn before then.

Jeff McNeil this season in the minors vs. righties: .376 / .440 / .710 // 1.150 Jeff McNeil this season in the minors vs. lefties: .238 / .324 / .333 // .658 I mean, sure, find a new manager. But not over yesterday's lineup.

The GCL Mets remain faceless, but not graceless. Anyhow, I got the faces of the coaching staff, and that’s not nothing. They lost a tough one today, 4-2, to the division-leading GCL Cardinals, dropping their third in a row, and moving them to a less-than-desired 4-6 record over their last 10 games. You know who’s a name that needs a face? Ramon Guzman, that’s who. A tall, lanky right-hander out of the Magical Kingdom of San Pedro de Marcoris, Ramon just wants to have something to do, and that something is record outs. Nailing down a 5-2 record with a 2.16 ERA through his first 7 games (4 starts), Guzzie is not a racking of the big strikeout numbers, or even keeping the walks out of his game, but he has stayed successful by keeping batted balls on the ground a la Doug F. Sisk, among others. Showing a little flash out of the big pen is fellow Dominican Malky Men, Malky, who is neither walk nor balky, has thrown 11 1/3 innings so far to the tune of a 2.38 ERA. This is actually up from the 2.13 number he put up last year in the Dominican Summer League. If nothing else, it should help the guy bypass Kingsport to land in Brooklyn in his next stop. He’s already 21, so he needs to be CHALLENGED!! But it takes bats. And you know who has one? Ronnie Mauricio has one! The top signee from the team’s 2017-2018 foreign prospect class has not disappointed. Not to get all chirpy (because Amed Rosario), but Mauricio the 17-year-old (also from San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic) has followed Andres Gimenez’ example of making a splash against players two, three, and four years older. Older still, even! Ronny could walk more, but .336 / .351 / .529 // .880 line will play. Now take a pitch or two and you'll be fine, Ronzoni! The Mets sit in second place in the Gulf Coast League East Division.. They’re 6 1/2 games off the GCL Cardinals' pace, but second place is still second place. It’s where you want to be on your way to first. I think the logic isn't elusive. It was to stack righties against Milone to try and optimize platoon differentials. We don't have to agree, but it's the way folks do it.

Syndergaard not only returned, but he held the opposition to under 25 runs. I think that means free pizza or something. Seven innings pitched. One run allowed. Nine strikeouts. No walks. Tommy Milone.

Yeah, let's not get caught in the trap of saying the jury is in on all (or any) of these guys. Jesse Orosco came for Jerry Koosman in the 1978-1979 offseason. He debuted in 1979 and showed nothing. He didn't become an effective big-league pitcher until 1982. In 1983, he was the best reliever on the planet, with 20 years of effective pitching ahead of him. Prospects mature when they mature, or they don't, and only years down the road is the relative wisdom of their acquisition clear. The most consistent key to effective relief is to need as little of it as possible. And when your starter gets bumped with two out in the first, that ship has sailed. But you know, I think we can say the jury is on Reyes' pitching.

God bless them, they're actually going to get up and do it again. Thanks. I confess it was The Old Mole at FB who pointed out the happy coincidence between the score of the Mets' humiliation and the title of Chicago's 1971 soul/metal classick. For a song that clocks in a 4:50, there aren't a lot of words.

Justine has been slacking off.
