A four-run eighth this afternoon gave DSL Mets2 a squeaky little 8-7 victory over the DSL Brewers, as two hits and three RBI from Moisés Gonzalez lit the way. The win was only the fourth in the last 10 for the 18-23 Deuces, leaving them in sixth place among eight teams in The Dominican Summer League San Pedro Division, seven games off the pace. They take on Beermakers again at 10 AM tomorrow, so get to the airport and get your boarding passes now. You know who's worth getting on a plane for? Edinson Diaz is worth getting on a plane for. It's not just for his team-leading (among qualifiers) 1.37 ERA, but it's about how he has gotten there. In 19 2/3 innings, The Silver Hammer has allowed one walk, and struck out the grand total of three. THREE! Who'd've thunk that pitching to contact would ever work in 2019. But damn, it's working for Con Ed. How does he do it?! I don't know!! Get on the plane and find out!!!! But surely somebody is bringing the fire out of the bullpen, right? Well, sure. And somebody is frequently named Antonio Villalba, which I think means, "Anthony from Jessica Alba's House." With 27 innings under his belt AV Squad is only 2/3 of an inning short of the team lead in innings, despite not having started a game. Hey, that's how they roll down there in the DSL. But The Ant has done more than roll. He's ROCKED. He's pitched those 27 innings with all of a 1.00 ERA, having allowed but three runs while striking out 28. All Hail. But somebody has to hit. And that somebody of late has been outfielder Dyron Campos. Dyron is a name you'll soon see invited to Major League Spring training campos if he keeps doing what he's doing. Over the last 10 games, Dry-Run has been sizzling at the plate to the tune of a .351 / .368 / .459 // .828 figure over 38 trips to the dish. I know, you're thinking, "But where are the walks?" Well, Whatever-Your-Name-Is?, he's been doing that all season, you smarty-pants. His overall numbers add up to .333 / .401 / .434 // .835. Is that enough on-basin' for you? He's a teenaged Jeff McNeil is what he is. But everybody on the team is a teenaged somebody, and they want you to know that they are striving to be the best somebodies they can be. I heard he said "See you tomorrow" to Boone off-camera.

We're moving past the Kiner Threshold into Hack Wilson territory. Alonso now has one of the top-20 all-time home run totals for a Mets hitter in a single season, one of the top 15 all-time rookie home run totals, one of the to 15, and is now holder of one the top 794 all-time homer run record. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=16312 time=1563538987 user_id=68] This game was a microcosm of the Mets 2019 season: Alonso, the transcendent rookie, carrying the Mets offense, providing the key run production and then the dreadful bullpen blowing the game.

=G-Fafif post_id=16304 time=1563520426 user_id=55] Intensely questionable managing in the top of the 10th: second and third, nobody out, Callaway pinch-hits for Ramos for Lagares vs Will Smith. No way the lefty won't IBB Ramos, which he does. So you've burned your last RH bat and compound it by pinch-running Guillorme for Ramos, depleting your bench. Eventually, Dom Smith winds up in right.

Crawford is, and always has been, a heluva shortsop.

Man, if the opposing manager was really lining up the 2019 version of Pablo Sandoval against me at third, I'd be bunting all night.

Bases loaded and two out. I'm not sure McNeil saw a strike that whole at-bat, but nothing doing.

A terrible call at first by James Hoy.

Moronta in the Giants' bullpen looks like the ghost of Ray King.

Dug out after the leadoff triple. Time to strike back.

One more strike, Syndy!

I've been unavailable to type. It seems like the Mets are hoping one swing can give them a lead, but a full rally would be nice.

Gardner looks like he missed his nap or something. Thanks for trying to demolish the dugout, asshole.

Depending on this weekend, this could be a really weird period. Apart from the hard deadline — and can anybody explain what precipitated that? — there are six American League teams with no reasonable chance of the post-season, but only one in the National League. And the National League one is Miami, who have already dealt off all their veterans pre-emptively (though there's always Curtis).

My takeaway from the TIME cover is that the United States is deploying Gooden against Gaddafi. And Gaddafi is fucked.

Their qualities are very similar. Eerily so. If they weren't wearing the same insignia on their hats, the two shots could be two different perspectives of the same moment.

Among the new signees the Mets officially inked on July 2 was Jhoandry Gonzalez. You'll be less-than-shocked to find out that he's from Caracas. The whole centuries-old Western hegemony of H following O when following J is crumbling, and Venezuela is at the vanguard. A paradigm shift is before us.

Font has been up and down since 2012, and the thing is, though he's never really gotten traction in a big league career that has added up to 96 innings over parts of seven seasons, he's absolutely killed it in AAA. And I think if he can find a goin'-nowhere team to plug him into a rotation and allow him to take his lumps, he'll probably figure it out along the way an be a decent big league pitcher. We certainly saw him have some good spurts with the Mets.

Sheesh, they're going fast.

Fun fact: Bess appeared in the first episode. She was the force that turned Mary and Rhoda from bitter adversaries to BFFs. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ad/Bess_and_Phyllis_Lindstrom_Mary_Tyler_Moore_Show_1974.JPG>

A slow start to the second half made doubling Strawberry's number seem unlikely, and then he hit that thing he just hit.
