1. I'm probably misremembering, but I seem to recall Strawberry homering on opening day, like, five years in a row, including hitting the inflatable roof in Montreal on the first day it was there.
2. If only that were a question of time, and it was a good thing to take care of during the extended layoff. Unfortunately, it's a matter of taste, and I'm not sure the lockdown is going to effect that. But I certainly agree.
3. I'm really hoping they can finally do something about the Great Wall of Flushing.
4. I'm sorry. I've been without baseball too long and I'm confusing them with the WOR interregnum, with commercials for Glenn Beck in between innings. Mark Simone promos and shit.
5. =Ceetar post_id=35922 time=1587818633 user_id=102] what's wrong with CBS? it's fine.
6. What does you have done to it?
7. You're a Mets exec. The team is off the field, and the owners are pre-occupied with either selling the franchise or shoring themselves up enough to get through this season. Despite working from home and having to work with outside partners that are hard to get a hold of, you find yourself with an unexpected combination of time and freedom, and realize it's a good time to cross off one or two big tasks that just linger out there. Not baseball decisions really, but corporate/commercial/branding/partnerships-type stuff. Where do you start? Gotta get the Mets the fuck off CBS-AM, right?
8. I'm not getting this whole survey business. Does MLB really have that little idea of what baseball is and isn't that they have to throw themselves at the mercy of survey answerers? This is an an entity that actively encourages ballot stuffing.
9. I don't see how this eases the process of schedule making. They might as well have asked it as, "In order to abate climate degradation ..."
10. I read a lot about him in a book called High Heat. Earl Weaver submitted an intelligence test to all his players. They were minor leaguers, so they didn't have much juice to complain, but a handful got the gumption to march into his office and ask wtf? He'd sit them down and re-assure them. "It's nothing personal. I'm probably not even going to look at the results and I have no intention of sharing them with anybody, but it's not fair to ask one guy to take the test and not everybody." They'd sit there for a moment in confusion and then say, "Oh ... I get it. Dalkowski." I think Dalkowski had his only good minor league period under Weaver. The manager had told the pitcher to not throw anything but fastballs unless he heard Weaver whistle, which was the green light allowing him to mix in breaking balls. He'd only whistle two or three times a game, but the other players could supposedly feel the happiness radiating off of Dalkowski when he heard it.
11. Looks like Cubs in the north, Reds in the south and west, and a little bit of Cardinals in the southeast. https://cartocdn-gusc-b.global.ssl.fastly.net/naterattner/api/v1/map/naterattner@662a1411@62c7fc536942815655e208f60c6f4a17:1552774723247/1,2/4/4/5.png> https://cartocdn-gusc-c.global.ssl.fastly.net/naterattner/api/v1/map/naterattner@662a1411@62c7fc536942815655e208f60c6f4a17:1552774723247/1,2/4/4/6.png> https://seatgeek.com/tba/articles/where-do-mlb-fans-live-mapping-baseball-fandom-across-the-u-s/https://seatgeek.com/tba/articles/where-do-mlb-fans-live-mapping-baseball-fandom-across-the-u-s/
12. The funny part was that, no only did they get 16 WAR out of Darling, four more out of Terrell, and 30.3 out of HoJo, it wasn't even in exchange for Mazzilli. It was in exchange for the right to hang on to Mazzilli until the Mets needed him again. The real load on that team was Kingman. The Mets would have been a better team with Mazzilli at first, but Kingman had little trade value. And his continued tenure at first helped set up the Hernandez trade, so that was another hidden win there. Plus, the Mets got a future long-time announcer and short-time hitting coach. And don't forget Tim Burke!
13. Every good Tommy Lasorda rant starts off with him being reasoned and measured, flying off the handle, taking a step back, recognizing that he's flying off the handle, making sure everybody knows that he knows, and then flying off the handle again. It may be why he's one of the greatest "dumb" managers of all time. It's clear that his hand never quite leaves the stick. Compare that with, say, Hal McRae melting down, which was kinda sad, because his wings were in a tailspin and he didn't even know the stick had broken. There's a reason Tommy Lasorda managed over 3,000 games.
14. Man, you never realize the things you're gonna miss.
15. Funny that nobody voted for Dave Magadan.
16. Nancy and Bud. I'm SHOCKED.
17. I read that this morning. Strangely rendered digital artwork. A cool depiction of Shea in the background, but the Swoboda figure in the foreground — with the small, thin number — is more suggestive of the Cubs' look than the Mets'. I want to nonetheless congratulate them for depicting Ronnie in his original 14, rather than his more typical 4, but then I look at a the name-on-back in 1965 and it's all wrong. https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/9CvxCrB1gbcMGEUR1q42jA--~A/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjtzbT0xO3c9MTI4MDtoPTk2MA--/https://media-mbst-pub-ue1.s3.amazonaws.com/creatr-uploaded-images/2020-04/d994c940-83fe-11ea-9fff-c62697e06451>

J-Rod don't have those kinds of deep pockets. Cohen does. And from what I can tell he has a big hiney too, along with $13 billion or so. Yes, but there's the backdoor way. Put together a team of famous dudes that the league would be happy to associate with. They tap into their personal wealth a bit, but largely use financing and hidden partners to pay for the bulk of the team. That was the Kranepool proposal and that was basically the Jeter strategy and why his group had to debut on an austerity budget.
19. =metsmarathon post_id=35595 time=1587499390 user_id=83] honestly, if arod puts his name on this thing, do you really think he'd be okay with floundering? image and perception seem to be important to the man.
20. Cohen played for the Mets as a child? I agree that a Cohen return is a more likely scenario that an Alex Rodriguez purchase — not that MLB wouldn't be intrigued by a pair of would-be Latino co-owners.
21. While it included some florescent colors, I'd call that design more "neo-Deco" than "psychedelic." The team names look like the giant names of 1920s movie palaces.
22. I understand. And you're right in thinking that making billion dollar decisions based on such attributes almost always works out well. But somehow I still have my doubts. I can't quite put my finger on why.
23. A Trumpian man-child who believes his own bullshit, with a desperate need for affection, and beyond that, redemption — plus his lifelong-Yankee-fan, maneating wife. Both are nouveau-riche, publicity hungry, and desperate to stay relevant past their sell-by dates. I can think of a thousand ways they could fuck things up worse.
24. I got Nimmo 2018 going .294 / .446 / .569 // 1.015 in 65 plate appearances leading off the game (a split OPS+ of 172), and .277 / .414 / .553 // .967 in 174 plate appearances leading off an inning (a split OPS+ of 172). Ashborough in 1962 went .284 / .424 / .365 // .789 in 92 plate appearances leading off the game (a split OPS+ of 132), and .343 / .458 / .429 // .886 in 212 plate appearances leading off an inning (a split OPS+ of 149). But as much as OPS misrepresents the relative value of OBP and SLG as equal, when it should weigh on-base percentage more highly, I think that would be even more true when judging the relative performances of leadoff hitters, so I think they should appear closer to equal than the split OPS+ figures suggest.
