1. If the union is split and some of the players are willing to come back to work and others aren't, we can play it like the wartime NFL and have a bunch of teams pair off and merge together.
2. Caught BNB streaming on Amazon Plus.
3. The two best sports films in US history both: 1. Feature Jackie Earle Haley. 2. Feature great, famous classical music pieces adapted for semi-ironic heroic scoring. 3. Feature teams shoehorned into the competition as an afterthought, with the Bears being the seventh team in the six-team league and the Cutters being team 34, starting in the back of a 33-team field. 4. Feature those teams only ending up in the competition as an afterthought only because of a bureaucratic bone being thrown to them. 5. Feature protagonist competitors who are aliens in their own town. 6. Feature probably a little too much comic hay being made at the expense of the gangly, curly-haired Jewish kid. 7. Feature just enough comic hay being made from the short kid who likes to punch. 8. Feature one (on the cycling team) and two (on the baseball team) stars carrying the rest of the sad sacks. 9. Feature the sad sacks having to step up and bail out the injured stars before the end. 10. Feature the redemption of a broken father figure, and you don't even realize it's going there until it does.
4. Is this a re-posting of old work or an update?
5. And, checking my work, Oliver had all of one homer off of Seaver, despite having the eighth most trips to the plate.
6. Al Oliver.
7. I'm remembering a TBA exhibition win that possibly featured an Anthony Recker walkoff grand slam. It may or may not have closed out a strong grapefruit season.
8. The Ballpark in Arlington, aka Ameriquest Field in Arlington, aka Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, aka Globe Life Park in Arlington, is actually now a former MLB ballpark. Sort of. The Rangers were set to cut the ribbon on their new home, Globe Life Field, this season, but like many planning a sparkling rookie year in 2020, the long trip to the majors has gotten longer, and the dream is on hold. I guess it's appropriate that the naming sponsor on the park is an insurance company. The ballpark will (allegedly) continue on as a soccer (USL) and football (XFL) facility but ends it's baseball career having yielded a 5-3 record to the Mets, hosting the Amazin's in 2003, 2011, and 2017. Maybe a history of only eight games makes memories harder to find or maybe it makes them more vivid. I associate the park with Jacob deGrom breaking down in tears after his second straight nightmare start in an otherwise wonderful 2017 season. It's hard to conceive, but replace this start and his one immediately previous against Milwaukee with average outings, and deGrom might be sitting on three straight Cy Young seasons. He somehow rallied from this nadir of mortality and reeled off winning decisions in his next eight starts. Without checking, I'm going to go ahead and declare that to be a career-best streak. Most of my other TBA memories are not Metly — Jim Morris making his cinematic debut in the person of Dennis Quaid, and Josh Hamilton accidentally killing a guy — but I'm sure you'll remind me of one or two. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/a4/93/8c/a4938c0d19696af49b37cad677d633d3.png>
9. Yeah, it'd be better to have corporate logos behind the action than in front of it.
10. I think about his baby faced wife Kari Ann all the time, though.
11. Well, Catwoman didn't get her own title for the grit, but for the zexx. Well, grit, too. Zexx, then grit. https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61hzh6V5dbL.jpg>
12. MAY 19, 2013 The Mets take a weekend series at Wrigley as that nutty Terry Collins goes with a Funky Sunday defensive alignment of Justin Turner at first and Daniel Murphy at second. Down 3-1 in the seventh, Juan Lagares yanks one out to left field off of Travis Wood with one on, to tie the game. Lagares had doubled earlier in the game and appears to have had Woody's number. Wood had homered earlier in the afternoon himself off of Dillon Gee. The Cubs stick with the the Tin Woodsman for one more batter but Murphy greets Kyuji Fujikawa with a homer of his own to lead off the eighth. Bobby P. comes on for Scott Rice to lock it down. The Mets enjoy a perfect inning from Greg Burke, who I have no memories of, unless you count knowing he's not Tim Burke as a memory. https://metsrostercentral.files.wordpress.com/2020/05/kaboom.jpg> http://leaptoad.com/mets/scorecard_graph.php?game=8245&font=1>
13. I can't wait to not see this.
14. Go get 'em, Art!
15. Anybody putting up a thread here, perhaps it would help, when you introduce a new film, if it isn't in theatrical release, letting the reader know what streaming platform(s) it can be found on.
16. Indeed, I think most here have acknowledged his general point is valid. They are essentially being locked out and asked to return to work under more hazardous conditions than the contract has outlined. Absolutely, this needs to go through the bargaining table. He just needs to have this conversation with his union brothers, though. As certain as I am that there are probably five or six people out there dying to see some Rays games, airing this shit out in public serves no healthy end.
17. Just a random name thrown out there. It seems that Coney Island has shown the effectiveness of housing ball teams as a side attraction for summer fun by the sea. So that's probably where I pulled the first two ideas from. Scarsdale is probably hardcore Yankee territory, but big-income residents+ progressive ideals probably is as fertile a spot as any to debut the She-Mets.
18. This is a good time to lay the groundwork for an all-female Mets minor league affiliate, and base them out of Scarsdale or Long Beach or the East End or something.
19. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: I think about Art from time to time. He wasn't the right manager for the Mets by any stretch but what got me was how defeated he was when he finished here. He may not have been Billy Squier but managing the 03-04 Mets was his "Rock Me Tonite" video. I don't think he'd even worked in OBB since the Mets fired him in the New York Post then let him hang around for a few weeks His Moneyball film portrayal didn't do his real-life any favors either. The book was fairer to him. It is notable how the Art Howe dead-man-walking precedent has ensconced itself in Mets culture. Jerry Manuel, Omar Minaya, and Sandy Alderson were all kind of fired before they were fired, also.
20. Total baseball lifer. Turned around a wrecked Yankee franchise. Should have stepped in and tossed Roger Clemens in 2000.
21. To be fair, you don't name a kid "Blake Snell" and not raise him to be an asshole, if you know what I mean.
22. Players should totally not be having this conversation through the press.
23. Oh, he has, just never as president.
24. I demand that Ben Grimm be signed by the Mets as their opening day catcher.
