    Rule V'd away from the Senators in 1965, and thus was forced to be carried by the Mets all through the 1966 season. He did modestly well for a 20-year-old who went from A-ball straight to the big leagues, but that first MLB season was his last. You get an idea of just what sort of manner the Mets used him in when you see that team had an amazing record of 4–33 (.108) in games in which he appeared. And he got the win in three of those four. The quintessential Bill Hepler game may be August 17, 1965. Jack Fisher put the Mets in an early 7-1 hole to the Pirates. The Mets saw the writing on the wall and sent Hepler out to eat up as many innings as he could, and then the team shocked everybody by showing enough heart to come back for an 8-7 win as Billy threw four shutout innings and former Pirate Bob Friend finished up the last three innings for the save.

    Indeed so. I am impressed at how quickly he made it to the majors. He has had to shed a lot. He was a football star in high school, but gave up two-sport dreaming when he enrolled in college, and then he was a two-way star in college, but had to give up hitting when he joined the Mets. I hope he doesn't have to give up starting and become a reliever anytime soon. Also, I hope the Mets have put together a plan for how to develop a prospect as a two-way player. Shohei Ohtani has revealed decades upon decades of conventional wisdom to be misguided, and I hope our team is quicker and smarter than the others at adapting.

    We also have every opportunity, and all the data we need, to assign wins and losses on a partial basis to multiple pitchers. It is also quite easy to divide up the responsibility for earned runs among two (or more!) pitchers. But dogma has a way of persisting.

I do not object to this course of action, as the later innings are higher-leverage than the earlier ones, so there is a motive for pushing Jacob deGrom deeper into the game. It has been used, and while sometimes it is used effectively, it is also found to be unwieldy. You have to find three or more relief pitchers who (a) are regularly effective; ( are willing to put throw 100 innings or more; and © are happy to never earn a win, save, or hold, but still accrue losses. You have to be figure out how to maneuver if you have scheduled a quality starter a week in advance, but then don't want to use him if your opener has you in a hole. You have to do that every day. It can be done, and has been done, but it comes at a cost and the cost-benefit ratio has not paid off for any team or manager. Still, the real issues are not being addressed.
