If you are going to claim "Great minds think alike. You're not one of us." is somehow not directed at people reading your posts, but at people who will never read your posts, I do not know what to say. If you are going to claim "I would like to see some late game winning rallies for a change. You wouldn't?" is an honest question that I should take seriously, but somehow not read any contempt into it, I do not know what to say. I will just open my parachute and drop out of this thread.

Of course you have. You have THREE (now FOUR) sig lines at a time and frequently include one or two (two at the current time) which derides fellow posters as unintelligent. Why? I don't know. No, it would be nice, but I would like to see some late game winning rallies for a change. You wouldn't? Later Of course not. Please don't ask me stupid questions. I just don't agree that I am spoiled because of something that happened 40 years ago. And they have had some late game winning rallies. They haven't won after trailing after eight. But they have won after being tied through eight. They have won after being down in the eighth, rallying then, and taking a lead. They have won after rallying to tie in the eighth, and then taking the lead or walking off in the ninth or later. And then there is the seventh. And the sixth. A late rally is not exclusively a rally that occurs after trailing after eight. And if we do not get what we want, then we don't. The idea that anybody has been "spoiled" and somehow maintained unreasonable expectations hasn't haven't gotten more realistic about despite four decades of reality may apply to somebody, but not myself or anybody I have met. And it is disingenuous to suggest this is about what "I would like to see." Who wouldn't? That is very different from being spoiled.

When a starter would falter in the middle innings, he would be brought in with men on base to end the threat before the team (hopefully) started to build a bridge to Edwin Díaz. He had been failing in this role of late, and along with the middle-inning falterings that precipitated his entrances, he has had as much to do with recent struggles as anyone on the staff. José Castillo has given the team good innings in both the majors and minors. It will be interesting to see if he gets a similar role or it goes to one of the others. It would be nice to get starters through the sixth consistently enough to not need such a role. I am very much not spoiled.

The 2025 Mets are 61–2 (.968) when leading after eight innings. The two losses were: April 25 against Washington, when the Mets rallied down from three nothing with four runs in the eighth. Ryne Stanek was sent out to protect the one-run lead, and gave up a triple and a single to tie the game. After a groundout, AJ Minter was brought in and yielded a game-winninghit to James Wood.June 3 against the Dodgers in LA, as Huascar Brazobán came in with a one-run lead gave up a game-tying homer to the first batter (Max Muncy) on a 1-2 pitch. José Butto came in for the 10th and Freddy Freeman drove in the magic runner with a one-out double. The Mets have blown some leads of late, but they have tended to be in the middle innings.

I imagine the outcomes under such a narrow set of circumstances would look pretty random, thought not meaningless. The distinction between a team that is playing .050 ball in such circumstances and a team that is playing .020 ball (or .000 ball, for the Mets) may or may not be a difference maker. The Rockies as leader, on one hand, make no sense, as they are having a terrible season, but on the other hand, kind of do make some sense, as they play in a stadium where runs are plenty.

Anecdotally, we had a poster consistently arguing that José Reyes should have been called up earlier, which is fine, but he would not entertain any notions or evidence to the contrary. I am guessing that was you, no?

Unfortunately, while our forum goes back to the late Bobby Valentine era, the archives only go back to 2005, as some sort of massive data crash at ezboard destroyed the first few years.

Kade Morris (the player traded for Paul) started well in AA this year (2-3, 2.79) before going to AAA Las Vegas* and getting battered (4-6, 6.17). A lot of players get knocked around on their first trip (and subsequent ones) to the PCL, but that ain't getting it done anywhere. As for specific memories, the main ones are the lawn gnome-like beard he showed up to camp with, which got immortalized on picture day**, and winning his first two starts on a western swing as the Mets clawed their way back into the race***. * It is still weird that players are playing in AAA Las Vegas hoping for a promotion to MLB Sacramento so they can be established with that team when it comes time for them to move to the big time and relocate to Las Vegas. ** If Johnny Lunchbucket was here, he'd say that Blackburn hadn't earned the right to express himself so flamboyantly and ostentatiously. So, presumably, would Crash Davis. *** Those wins were against Anaheim and Colorado, but still, the Mets kinda looked smart for a week there.

I would not write that I could do something that I could not do.

If this is the surgery where all or part of a rib (or more than one)? is removed, then yeah, it's hard to think of anybody who has returned to the same level afterwards. Matt Harvey is naturally the main cautionary tale. He was rarely ever good after surgery for TOS, but for all I know, this is a completely different procedure.

I can show a Himalayan mountain of evidence that refutes the notion that Reyes was MLB-ready the day he came up. To state that he was as if it is an established fact suggests that evidence is not what you are looking for at all.

I cannot speak for most Mets fans and I would suspect that you cannot either. Of course his performance is evidence that he could have performed well sooner. What it isn't is conclusive evidence. Unless you have three exact clones of the same player, and call each one up at a different time and then measure the three outcomes across time to the ends of their careers, keeping 100% of all other factors even, this remains unknowable. And that is why this is the way of madness.

Of course there are people who were called up too early. Of course there were people who were called up too late. And there are probably even a few called up at exactly the perfect time. And of course it is unknowable who these people are or were. To the extent we know anything about whether this guy or that guy received the right or wrong timing, we only know in deep retrospect, and what we learn is far from definitive. And that is why this is the way of madness.

Well, I would encourage reversing field.

But he wasn't done there, as he landed in the Pioneer League, playing for the Billings Mustangs. That's far from Main Street in the professional baseball pecking order, but hey, the cost of living is probably relatively low. But even in his three starts in Billings, he still didn't appear to be fooling anybody, walking 11 in 8 1/3 innings on his way to 10.80 ERA. And somehow, compared to his recent performances, this was an improvement. But once in a blue moon, the guy must somehow throw a magic pitch that makes people think he has something that isn't showing in the numbers, because now he's back in affiliated ball with the Mets, returning to the Florida Complex League. It is so curious how often a guy suffers some sort of hand trauma from a hit-by-pitch or sliding incident. The manager and trainer or trainers go out there and give him a thorough examination, but he is allowed to stay in the game, only to be removed the next half inning and hit the IL by the next day. It makes me wonder why they bother examining him at all if they leave him in the game while he's still hurt. MANAGER: "How do you feel?" PLAYER: "Aaah! I don't know. I'm just trying to shake off the throbbing and see." MANAGER: "Well, we're going to let Felix examine you and see how you're doing." TRAINER: "Can you grip my hand?" PLAYER: "Yeah, I think so." TRAINER: "Tighter." PLAYER: "How's that?" TRAINER: "Do you remember when we first met? PLAYER: "I thought you were such a snob!" TRAINER: "And I thought you were a daddy's girl." PLAYER: "You barely said anything to me!" TRAINER: "How could I? I was scared of you?" PLAYER: "Of me?!" MANAGER: "So what's your read, Felix?" TRAINER: "Just got a run through a few more things. Diego, let's have thumb war." PLAYER: "One-two-three-GO! Oh! AAAAH!! I jus ... Ah, you win!" TRAINER: "Want to do two out of three?" MANAGER: "Can we get ON with this?" TRAINER: "OK, Diego, show me the church." PLAYER: "Uhn." TRAINER: "That's good. Now show me the steeple." PLAYER: "AHHH!" TRAINER: "Great, now show me the people!" PLAYER: "Here they are!" TRAINER: "You're hi-LAR-ious!!" MANAGER: "Look, can he stay in the game or not?!" TRAINER: "Yeah, he is good to go." 　　Trainer and manager jog back to dugout. Play resumes. MANAGER: "That was close." TRAINER: "What was close?" MANAGER: "His hand. I thought he was really hurt." TRAINER: "Oh, his hand? His hand all sorts of ****ed up. If we x-rayed it now, it would look like a maraca. He'll be out six to eight weeks minimum. Probably more." MANAGER: "Then what the **** is he in the game for?!" TRAINER: "Well, why waste a player? It's just his hand. You can take him out next inning. He doesn't need his hand to run the bases." MANAGER: "THAT'S HOW HE GOT HURT IN THE FIRST PLACE!" TRAINER: "And maybe he'll magically get better while he's out there. I'll examine him again when he gets back to the dugout." MANAGER: "PLEASE DON'T!!"
