Pete Alonso had a stolen base. Ryan Cordell had a stolen base. Edwin Nuñez had a stolen base. Amed Rosario had 0 stolen bases. The team finished with a grand total of ONE successful sacrifice bunt. Billy Hamilton, welcome to the Mets record books. The Mets enjoyed what I imagine to be their first season without a single managerial ejection. Congratulations to Luis Rojas. Congratulations too to Dave Racaniello for coming very close to being the team's first ever bullpen catcher to receive an ejection. Juan Lagares appeared in two games, wearing two different numbers, and then received a DFA followed by a release, but never took a plate appearance.

The Cleveland Slavs. The Cleveland Fellers. The Cleveland Marketeers. The Cleveland Chapmans. Yeah, Spiders is looking better and better.

Nicknaming to underscore your locality's most lucrative tourist attraction is a really minor league practice.

Yeah, I was thinking DH's should possibly count as bench players in 2020.

Gibson, Zabriskie, Gary Thorne, Mike Loop, Ray Knight, and Bill Robinson. Having the Mets on your résumé must have shone pretty nicely during a December 1989 hiring spree.

Hunter Pence represents a real high-point for Met-fan creativity.

Absolute news to me is that Ray Sadecki had retired and was staying with the team under a "quasi-coaching status."

Monday and Johnstone also both knew how to make gold.

Who had the lesser offense? The 1965 Dodgers or the 1988 Dodgers?

No, the card just flashed into my head and I got worried and checked to make sure Jenkins is healthy. Bill James did a short essay about Gibson and Jenkins being with the Globetrotters at different times. Jenkins' tenure was more of a gimmick, but Gibson, unsurprisingly, could really play. It seems odd that he missed that there was a third MLB Hall-of-Famer with a Globetrotting background.

Gibson and Brock were both Harlem Globetrotters. Are you sure about Brock? I know Ferguson Jenkins was a Trotter. In fact, after hearing the bad news about Gibson, this card sprung to mind. [fimg=400]https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0903/7868/products/20161123_121434_1024x1024.jpg?v=1527169760[/fimg] Seaver's joke about his Hall of Fame pitcher's weekend was that Gibson and Koufax were called the #4 and #5 pitchers at the table because they were the only two without 300 wins. I don't know if that's conflated with the story above where he didn't let Gibson sit down, or if Seaver really liked to repeatedly bust Gibson's balls on the same subject.

Terrible. Gibson was part of the private dinner Seaver would throw every year at the Hall of Fame weekend, with Sandy Koufax, Gaylord Perry, and Warren Spahn. To hear him tell it, when folks came up to him at card shows to tell him how cool his reputed fierce and violent competition temperament was, and he had no idea what they were talking about.

What do you think might lie beneath the surface? He occasionally plays golf with his brothers after promising his wife that they'd go antique shopping. His favorite author is Tom Clancy and thinks the posthumous novels with Clancy's name on them but written by some other dude are just as good or better? Maybe his pastor goes a little too far with incorporating "You know you're a redneck if ... " jokes into his sermons, but David just cracks up every time anyhow.

They also have in their possession a later from from Rose, who advised the Mets not to waste a draft choice by selecting him in the re-entry draft last week. This would totally be on exhibit if I curated the Mets Hall of Fame and Museum.

Bobby Orr looks positively Seaverian in that shot. Amazing that he was as good as anybody in the league from 19 on, but he was done at 26. Also pretty cool that the two greatest Orrs both brought glory to Boston, though neither was from there. Benjamin took over just as Bobby's knees broke down.

Oh, and good job including short-time Met, but Wifey Watch-legend Matt Reynolds.

I just think Topps and others like to do their best to sell the illusion that the photo was taken yesterday, and the guy on the card could be the exact same guy out on the field right now. In future years (hopefully) the mask or gator will tell the cardbuying pre-teen that this shot is old and the publisher is cheap.

I wonder if future cards are going to be unable to use shots from2020, because of the giveaway maskware.

It's about the money, obviously. If you don't sign Marizzy, for instance, you're sure going to need somebody like him. But you're ready to give $6.5 million to Chirinos? That was an easy no for me. Brach seems like an easy yes.

I confess that I enjoy knowing what the odds are.

I wasn't sure if he meant the owners of the other MLB teams or the Mets minority owners. I'm not clear if Mr. Cohen is buying out them as well. Since about 90% of them are members of the Wilpon family, corporate subsidiaries of Sterling, or Cohen himself, it's probably not going to complicate matters much either way.

Lots of free agents. Lots of room on the 40 (and will be more after the likely removal of Ryan Cordell). A few decisions to make on options, but none of them seem particularly high stakes.
