I guess the big surprise here is Michel Otañez. MO signed at 18, relatively late, so he's pretty much filled out and ready to be what he'll be, his experience is such that he's yet to appear above Brooklyn, having been bit by the Tommy John bug five starts into his DSL career, missing over a season in recovery, and still trying to catch up. He throws hard, but at 96-97, with an occasional high peak at 99, it's not like he's a wunderkind. I think teams are adding guys lower and lower on the developmental ladder, who normally wouldn't have a chance to stick on anybody's 25-man roster for a season, because now the 25-man roster is a 26-man roster, and it's a little bit easier to hide a guy. But now they have to spend three years, trying not to have the waive the guy while he's still trying to get remotely close to the majors. Netherlander Shervyen Newton was left exposed last season, but the team has decided not to roll the dice again this season, despite (a) Shervy not being able to add anything official to his résumé in 2020, and ( having a pretty shitty season in his first taste of full-season ball in 2019. But he's a diamond in the rough, behind on his more refined baseball skills but athletically dazzling on defense in drills, showing impressive power for a lower-level middle infielder, and catching up on the switch-hitting. Everybody's losing developmental time during The Great Pause, and teams are scared and they're thinking that maybe prospects like Shervy ain't that young anymore. It's a key season for him, certainly. Still vulnerable in the Rule Fivey Draft are lower-level prospects from higher-level rosters who perhaps could do a convincing imitation of a big leaguer, but are less likely to be any more than a replacement-level player. These include Will Toffey (the bounty in the Jeurys Familia trade, Wilmer Reyes (a middle infielder with an incredibly Metly name who hasn't gotten out of Brooklyn, but wows 'em at workouts), and, um, Tim Tebow (an old lefty quarterback with a mesomorphic frame but a wobbly wing).

Cool, thanks! I couldn't find anything at midnight last night. So I guess the vulnerable guy is ... Will Toffey?

He's 25 and has been through about a half dozen organizations. He throws 99 and is as big as a house, but has never been a big strikeout guy. He's one of two Sam McWilliamses in minor league baseball, but neither apparently are related to longtime National League starter Larry McWilliams, though he was also a tall guy. There must be a lot of teams who saw some untapped potential if the Mets had to give him a big league contract. The Mets had the roster spot to spare. Worth noting that they seem to have added nobody else to the roster, despite today being the deadline to do so before the Rule 5 Draft. They have four or five more spots open I think.

I think he kind of looks impish. Like pointy ears and stuff. Apart from Terry, the only persons I've ever heard describe a tough situation as being "in a jackpot," or having one's "ass in a jackpot" are cops. Usually, it was with regard to being in a tough spot professionally. As in "My partner was seeing a hooker and now Internal Affairs wants to talk to me about it. That's some jackpot he left me in."

That may ultimately be the fallout. On a very versatile and flexible roster, Canó was one of Manager Luis Rojas' least flexible players, so the benevolent fallout of his disappearance certainly should be guys gravitating toward their better and more useful positions. But Mets Roster Central notes that such a move opens up a hole in outfield. That hole may well soon be filed by an offseason addition, but in the meantime, the primary candidate would be Mallex Smith, and since Robel Garcia has a slot on the 40-man roster and Mallex don't, Barney Robel gets the tap for the time being. With regard to the flexibility, the Mets could theoretically field a Smith/Rosario platoon, with Smith playing left against righthanders, McNeil playing second, and Giménez playing short. Against righties, Amed plays short, Gimenez slides over to second, and McNeil heads back out to left. I'm not necessarily advocating, but it does give a sense of the range of options the team currently has. Ouch, Mickey.

Don't you think that sort of thing always bites you in the dick? It's bad enough to have a troll in chief.

Them's two terrible ideas.

Every time I hear Chernoff's nae, I have to remind myself what his relationship to Mark is. To my memory, it was under the elder Chernoff that K-Rock went from an "FM Rock" to a "Classick Rock" format. The former had been stale for so long that the switchover was only somewhat discernible, but I associate it, and him, with the genre's surrender to history.

Without checking, I'm recalling our four Georges to date as being Altman, Foster, Stone ... and Theodore. Hey, I remembered them an alphabetical order. With checking, I see that they were all born before 1950 — a gilded age for Georges.

This is so very like stories of new CEOs taking over a company, and trying to put a new face on everything and turn over a new leaf, but they don't know what the old guy left to break until it breaks. It's like Bob Iger replacing Michael Eisner and only then realizing what a clusterfuck the new theme park builds were. Or it's a lot like what President-Elect Biden's life is going to be like in two months.

There's a long history of NPB pitchers doing everything they can before allowing a doctor to cut open their moneymaker. For a long time, the best pitchers did what they could to rehab the arm, rejecting surgeries that were long in practice with MLB pitchers, believing for years that they were a few weeks of rehab away from their arm being responsive, rather than miss time recuperating from surgery. I've got to believe surgery is more common now among Japanese pitchers (four of the top Japanese pitchers in America have gotten the TJ surgery), but they still come from a culture that challenges them to avoid it if they can, living with partial tears for as long as they can until the tear is complete. This also connects with young pitchers in Japan getting workloads (particularly as amateurs) that haven't been seen Stateside in generations.

You need to get back in court. You're losing it.

I'm just gonna yawn now.

Yeah, that's pretty much the facts.

MLB and the MLBPA have to swap horses.

My answer to this, is that Morton/Odorizzi is nothing like Wacha/Porcello. That's fine. You disagree. I didn't bring up Wheeler. You did. That's not glossing over. It just wasn't the subject. Edgy MD wrote: And here is the part where you suggest "New regime? Same as the old regime." This is the part that is tiresome. I can totally speak for myself. Type for myself too.

Yeah, maybe he's roided up the upper body and compromised his mobility. I imagine any part of accepting the consolation prize of Ozuna involves either (a) keeping Nimmo in center, or ( moving parts made more redundant by Ozuna's signing in pursuit of a strong centerfielder or starting pitching. In other words, he's nowhere near the fit that Springstone is. Scouting reports suggest that Pete Crow-Armstrong could be one of the better centerfielders in the bigs if he was put out there today. He's years away, of course, even if everything works out, and even then, might lose a step or two before his bat arrives. But it'd be sweet if Springer could hold down center until then.

I'm interested in a rotation of Tanaka, Wacha, Matsuzaka, Bevacqua, and Billy Wagner's alpaca.

This is tiresome. I didn't mention anything about Wheeler initially, because he wasn't the subject. I don't consider these players to be Wheeler's replacement or replacements. You do. That's fine. I considered them guys in the mix to pitch as needed. I don't really think in terms of replacements. There's always a call for more pitching. Picking the right ones and getting the best out of them is key. I'm certainly not going to defend those two as the right ones, or argue that not signing Wheeler was the right or wrong move. That's another discussion. I'm just trying to (a) pass on that the team is looking at these two players (Odorizzi and Morton), and ( starting a conversation on what to look for when adding extra pitchers so that they get more R.A. Dickey and less James Baldwin or whatever. I'm not looking to defend the Wilpon management. I wouldn't have signed either one of those guys. I think good scouting gets better guys than them for minor league money, and good development gets David Peterson in there from day one. And good deployment suggests not dickering for years about giving Seth Lugo is a chance to start. Is there any appeal in Odorizzi or Morton for the right money? Other folks seem more intrigued than I am. Get mad at them, Glossy.

He's very much the consolation prize in the George Springer race, so it's part of the game to at least buy a ticket.

Omar V. may be a definite no, but in another era, he might well be a lot of folks' definite yes. Eleven Gold Gloves at a premium position was serious enough that little more than a glance was necessary to review the offensive numbers. He could fall off the ballot after one vote, but he'll probably get in 20-25 years later through some iteration of the Veterans Committee. Most of his comps (which aren't adjusted for era, of course) are in, and the others have either gotten serious consideration or will be getting such. The Rabbit Maranville Club — bunch of great bunters, they are. A sub-.700 OPS is still a sub-.700 OPS, of course.
