Nothing can be laid all at anybody's feet. It's a team game and organizations can prosper while some guys in the organization are doing more harm than good. Some organizations can flail despite a handful of guys — even the manager — performing wonderfully. You sort out where these spots are, adjust, and move on. I'm not a big Mendoza fan. There are, in fact, things he does that drive me nuts. But I tend to suspect that many of those things are tied into organizational philosophy, and so not obviously fixable by replacing him. If the Mets do replace him, he will be fourth straight Mets manager to last for exactly two seasons — no more, no less (depending on how you count Carlos Beltran). While I am certain there are a few guys out there better than him (and certainly many worse), most of the things that drive me crazy have generally persisted across all of these managerial regimes.

Not all the drama this offseason will be Alonsonian. The Mets have Edwin Diaz signed through 2028, but the 2026 and 2027 seasons are both player option years at $18.5 million per. A pair of escape clauses. Neither his slider nor his fastball seem to be what they once were, but he sure did well this year with what he had, and he likely would prefer that success to lead to some more sweetener in his deal. I probably have this wrong, as it is late and I am tired, but I calculate 64 possible outcomes. Assuming a 50/50 chance of either team winning each game, the [MetsBlue]Mets[/MetsBlue] come out on top in 34 of the scenarios (53.13%), the Reds take the spot in 24 versions (37.50%), and the Diamondbacks triumph in 6 (9.38%). That adds up to 100.01% but rounding does that sort of thing. The Mets would look better if they held any tie-breakers, but, alas, they do not. Of course, it is not a 50/50 chance of either team winning each game. The Reds and Diamondbacks are facing clearly better teams, but as they are also teams safely in the playoffs, they have incentive to give their starters short workdays. On the other hand, the Padres could still climb to a higher seed, and the Brewers could still fall to a lower one, so maybe they play for reals.

Like Francisco Lindor, Liam Hendricks is a multiple-time nominee. Except he has been nominated SEVEN times. Each of the previous three years — 2022, 2023, and 2024 — the league has promoted Hendricks' advocacy, outreach, and support for the LBTQ+ community. The Binghamton Rumble Ponies took home the Eastern League championship last night. The team had a juggernaut of a season, winning the both the first and second half titles of the league's Northeast Division, earning a bye through the initial playoff round, and going straight to the title series, where they bested the Erie Seawolves, two games to one. The team was initially powered by a thunderous triumverate of Carson Benge/Jett Williams/Ryan Clifford — who moved around the field but generally served as the starting outfield — but their dominance only continued after the three were simultaneously promoted in early August. They won the first-half title by 10 games and the second half by seven, because they JUST DO NOT CARE. The team also benefited from outstanding performances by 21-year-old thirdbaseman Jacob Reimer (.279/.374/.479//.853 in 254 trips to the plate) and 20 (20!)-year-old infielder outfielder A.J. Ewing (.339/.371/.430//.801 in 132 plate appearances). Ewing put up that sexed-up line after blasting through St. Lucie and Brooklyn in the same year, stealing 70 bases in 81 attempts across the three levels. On the mound, the team benefited from a dynamite first half by Jonah Tong that you already know about, but also had knee-bending seasons from Jack Wenninger (12-6/2.92, striking out 147 in 135 2/3 innings) and Joander "Vander Meer" Suarez (5-2/3.05 in 82 2/3 innings). Ryan Lambert put up a 1.71 ERA in 42 innings out of the pen, struck out 64 guys in 42 innings, and generally made the opposition cry like babies. I'd like to report that it is all over but for Syracuse completing the trifecta, but despite the Orangemets ended their season on Sunday with a 9-0 win (five homers!), their awesome 46-29/.613 record left them three games out of the playoff money.
