  1. The schedule through the remainder of the season supposedly favors the Mets as compared to those teams we're fighting against for WC spots ... but not this weekend it doesn't, cuz while we're hosting the Nats Cards travel to Cincy for the weekend Pirates host Brewers Dodgers host Padres Marlins at Cleveland and Giants at Cubs (for four games, started last night) will be tough series for those teams.
  2. Josh got Smoked tonight in the 7th inning although Fernando then provided the team with some degree of Solace.

  5. Well, last night we got the bases-loaded 8th inning hit, tonight we didn't. Tonight the Marlins hit two routine GiDP balls but they were hit by their fastest players and so neither was turned. We hit two non-routine grounders that were turned into DPs because it was Loney & Conforto. Those weren't the only differences in the game, but they were biggies.
  6. At this point they don't have the 40-man space for Rosario and are running out of ways to create new ones. Nor do I think they'd go to him if they did as he's still just 20 y/o with <200 ABs above A-ball.

  8. Gotta like lineups where Kelly Johnson goes from cleanup, to 8th, the 3rd on consecutive nights. Don't like 'em so much when we're once again Cespedes-less.
  9. 7-2 since I laid down the 25-13 mark as the needed mark for securing a probable WC#2. So now it's more like a still tough but easier to swallow 18-11 goal. And we've only lost two major players to injury during that time which is, like, below average for this season.
  10. IIRC, Pryor also needed to be replaced, by Gregory Hines in this case, in HISTORY OF THE WORLD due to his drug use problems. That may have actually been the time he famously set himself on fire.

Dodgers wound up scoring three in the 8th then five in the 9th -- including a 2-out 9th inning Grand Slam by (who is?) LF Andrew Toles -- to pull out that second game. So while fans of the SFG were likely already thinking of being just 1/2 game out in the West as the Rox were leading 8-2 entering the 8th, they suddenly had to contend with a 1-1/2 game deficit again.
  12. WF's arm is strong enough for that side of the diamond but it's too scattered, particularly when he has to rush throws. Plus why burden Jose with his 2nd new position in two months? Basically you've got Loney, Flores, Johnson as a three-headed 1B/2B while Reyes + Cabrera + whoever [Reynolds, Cecchini?] cover the other side.
  13. He was one of the closers the Cards used (2011) when they had a different one every year*. It was by far his best ML season. Not great numbers this year but I guess he'll eat up some innings when others aren't available. Seems odd on the eve of several other pitchers being called up. A 31 y/o native of Mexico who'll be a FA at the end of the year. Listed at 6' 2" - 200 lbs, his name certainly isn't Fernando SalaD amirite folks? * StL closers for this decade (save leader for that year): 2010 -- Ryan Franklin 2011 -- Fernando Salas 2012 -- Jason Motte 2013 -- Edward Mujica 2014 & 2015 -- Trevor Rosenthal 2016 -- Seung-hwan Oh
  14. I think I like Wilmer better at 2nd. I don't trust his throws from 3rd ... and, yes, I realize the irony of saying this on a night where Jose made 2 errors.
  15. So among the season starting infield: - 1B went out for the season starting on May 21 after 145 PA - 2B is now out for the remainder of the season, last played on August 27 - 3B went out for the season on May 28 - 164 PA - the starting SS missed "only" 17 games and the starting catcher was out for 50
  16. Yup. Rubin is now reporting that NW will opt for surgery ... so ignore all that stuff at the top of the thread.
  17. Bastardo just balked in a run vs Cubs ... and then allowed a few more via hits. 5-1 Chicago
  18. SF won today, but the Dodgers have lost one and are in the process of losing the second (rained out on Tuesday) so there may be a new NL West team to pursue in the WC chase. Pitt losing 3-1 in the 6th, StL losing 3-1 in the 7th, and the Marlins have obviously lost already.
  19. That is, a discussion of Neil Walker's back, which is not quite the same thing as Walker is back. A "herniated disc" is the first opinion although, as always, a second will follow. Alderson calls it a "pretty routine" disc injury that is causing weakness is Walker's lower body, "but not significant enough to prevent him from playing". He goes on to dismiss rumors that it could be a career ending situation as "fabrication"; "I don't want people to become too concerned about where we are. I don't think it's as serious as it's been portrayed." sez Sandy. So, unless the second opinion proves more dire than the first by warning of further damage if he plays with his present condition, this is basically a pain management issue and Walker could be back in the lineup later this week if and when he feels up to it. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/198735808/neil-walker-should-be-ok-to-return-in-2016/

  23. This is a tough crowd for relievers. If the Mets disposed of guys after bad outings as often as demanded they'd be halfway through the roster of their Columbia affiliate by now looking for replacements.
  24. And now Matz will NOT come off the DL to make the start on Thursday as previously planned. The NYDN (Peter Botte) reports that Matz was ... shut down an outfield tossing session on Monday after one throw because he “felt a sensation” and irritation in his shoulder, according to Collins. “I am, yes,” Collins replied when asked if he was worried about losing Matz for a substantial timeframe. “His shoulder’s not ready to go, so he won’t be pitching (Thursday). “He needs more rest. He needs to continue with some more therapy. We aren’t going to have him throw probably for a couple of more days. We’re hoping we can throw him over the weekend and see if he can be ready next week.” Current plans have deGrom moved up from Friday to Thursday to finish out the Miami series with Gsvllman slated to open against the Nats And the hits just keep on coming. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/mets-steven-matz-won-return-dl-week-due-setback-article-1.2771945
