  1. I think that, as an act of protest, she should put up as many semi-nude selfies on the internet as possible.

He had previously lost to David Price in 2012 by just 4 points. The top three vote getters over all: Scherzer, Porcello, and Verlander, pitched together for the Tigers from 2010-2014

Imagine the shit we'd text, during games or otherwise, if we were to get a hold of such a super-secret number? Hey @Mets, your last trade sucked and tell Terry to quit bunting so much. Oh yeah, and my frickin' beer isn't cold enuf!!
  4. So do four teams trying to out-fox each other mean that he gets the fifth year on the contract he wants? Probably.
  5. He's done a few stints of managing at lower levels to date, but not a lot.
  6. A Boy Named Seo wrote: I know there are lots of factors involved, but are there any stats on runners getting thrown out at home? I've never seen any although at his point there can't possibly be a stat that someone somewhere isn't recording and tracking. Like you imply though, I'm not sure what kind of conclusions you could reach from just the raw number or even by percentage.
  7. I seem to have -- based on extremely UN-scientific survey results -- less 'Xs & Os' beefs with Terry than your average NYM fan, and sometimes I think all it takes is a longer exposure to out of town managers (as during playoff series) to make folks realize that all the questions they have about their own guy aren't going to magically disappear if/when he's replaced. That said, I'm not sure I would have guessed that he'd get five 1st and 2nd place votes especially coming in a season where there were three superior teams and one historic one. I guess I just assumed that Maddon was going to take this (and, yes, I realize that it doesn't include post-season) so I was really surprised that he got out-voted 2-1 at the top of the ballot.
  8. Biggest surprise - that Maddon lost to Dave Roberts while getting just half as many 1st place votes? OR - that Dusty Baker was named on more total ballots (26 of 30) than was Joe Maddon (22)? OR - that Terry got two first place votes and five in the top two?
  9. Glenn Sherlock is a 56 y/o native of Nahant*, Massachusetts, drafted by the Astros as a lefty-hitting catcher in the 21st round of the 1983 draft out of Rollins College in Florida (where he likely would have crossed paths with 'Mad Dog' Russo). He spent seven years total in the minors with Houston and with the Yanx, most of it at the lower levels, never getting the ultimate call-up. Following his final playing season in 1989 it was with the Yanx that he got his first coaching jobs as a bullpen coach in the early '90s. He moved to Arizona at their inception as a franchise (recruited there by Showalter one would assume) and has been there ever since surviving the numerous managerial and front office changes over there across 19 seasons. Even during this recent off-season purge out there in the desert where the manager, GM, and several coaches were removed, Sherlock was not specifically let go but I guess it became apparent that he was available and was seen talking to Sandy Alderson during the recent GM meetings. Just one of those classic 'baseball lifers'. * Yeah, I never heard of it either. It's a 1 sq mi town with a population of 3,410 on a peninsula sticking out in the harbor north of Boston.
  10. I read that something like 20-30 of the top 100 prospects are in the AFL this season - so it's not surprising that a neophyte like Tebow isn't exactly shining in that sort of company. That he's starting to look like he's at least making some progress is a decent sign. Still a long road ahead of him obviously, but he's maybe shown enough to have earned a shot at A-ball next year which may be more at his grade level even if he's going to be considerably older than the other kids in the class.

  12. Teufel Is Out At Third Probably because too many of our baserunners were out at home. Glenn Sherlock is your new one and ... is also the catching coach. No shit? Nice detective work. oe: D'oh!

  15. I wonder, given the theoretical choice of either/or right now, if GMs would choose Fulmer or Matz for their staffs over say the next five years? I suspect that Matz might still carry a majority in an anonymous type of survey although I have nothing specific to back that up.
  16. The only problem is that for whatever extra buzz they might create (assuming it creates any) they probably lose at least as much by eliminating a bunch of guys in advance, whether they be a distant 9th or a close 4th, while giving fans of the pre-eliminated crew disincentive to follow further. It would be different if there were some sort of off-season awards banquet and they wanted to make sure that all potential winners were present and not out on their off-season huntin'/fishin' trips. But instead the 'big reveal' usually winds up being a couple of guys in some MLBN studio somewhere with the winner (maybe) on a video/phone hookup from his living room.
  17. I don't like, or for that matter get the whole purpose of, this idea where they first narrow it down to the three "finalists" before revealing the winner. It's not like there was some intermediate step the top three had to pass in order to become finalists. This merely is an in-advance leak of the partial results of an already taken election and pre-reveals to all fans who may have an interest in someone else that their guy can't possibly win or even come close.

  19. Like I always say with these contracts, it's never the money that worries me it's the length and the length here is one year. If Walker suxx and/or is injured for the upcoming season then they have to eat it but if they thought this was going to screw up all the rest of their plans then they wouldn't have offered it in the first place. And if nothing else then he and/or Wilmer become Wright insurance.

  21. Baseball Prospectus is the first to chime in with their NYM list. The write-ups are all hidden behind the pay wall so we get nothing beyond the raw list plus a brief description that calls the system "middle of the pack" but also notes that there's some talent beyond just the top ten shows an improvement overall. A mixture of some familiar names and some less so. SS Amed Rosario RHP Robert Gsellman LHP Thomas Szapucki -- 5th round pick in 2015 out of a Florida HS. Split 2016 (9 starts total) between Kingsport & Brooklyn 1B Dominic Smith CF Desmond Lindsay -- 2nd round pick in 2015. 868 OPS in Brooklyn in 2016 RHP Justin Dunn -- the kid out of Freeport L.I. (by way of a prep school in Conn.) who was the 19th overall pick in 2016 SS Andres Gimenez -- a just turned 18 y/o Venezuelan who has yet to play in U.S. minor leagues OF Brandon Nimmo SS Gavin Cecchini RF Wuilmer Becerra
  22. They should be able to use Manhattan-born players too. And now batting (atting) for the nation of The Netherlands (erlands), ALEX (alex) RODRIGUEZ (driguez)
  23. From back on Page two of this thread: If a player takes qualifying offer he cannot be traded (without his consent) until June 15 of the following season, and that even if a player grants such consent, only $50K in cash can be exchanged as part of the trade.
  24. Today at 5PM (EST) is QO deadline time; players who have been offered the $17.2 mil QO have until that time to accept or reject. It doesn't appear that the Mets & Walker have had any substantive contract discussions concerning a longer deal so, for right now anyway, Walker has a substantial all or nothing choice to make.
  25. If your name is going to be Fritz Polka you damn well better be from somewhere in the upper midwest.
