  1. As mockable as some of Trump's picks are going to be, it's not like Ambassador jobs haven't often been handed out to various public figures short on connections to diplomacy but with plenty of connections to those with connections. Being a Kennedy, or at least related to one, was always a good path while Clinton was occasionally given to streamlining the process by simply auctioning off various posts to the highest bidder. In this case I'd bet that BV's at least somewhat passable command of the language puts him well ahead of most of the previous dozen or so ambassadors to Japan while his occasional penchant for pissing people off may actually be less than your typical diplomat. IOW ... Why the hell not!
  2. Yeah, that's been the problem with the whole deification of Jeter thing, that the worshipers have taken a legit HoF'er and still somehow managed to over-rate his importance. I'm already dreading the talk, sure to come up four years hence, about how HE is finally the one above all others who deserves to go in unanimously which, given the coming era of open ballots and the specter of public shaming that could go along with it, may actually happen. And as much as I hate the whole narrative (stemming largely from DiMaggio's time) about how no one should ever go in unanimously, the idea that he alone should be the one to break the trend is distasteful enough for me to temporarily jump on that wagon and hope that at least a handful of voters do as well.

The Padres entered today with just 33 guys on their 40-man roster and, by the time the dust had cleared this morning, wound up with each of the first three in the ML R5 draft, one pick of their own plus they acquired each of the next two in trades. Not a coincidence, I don't think, that the two teams most prominently breaking things down this year and making the decision to start all over -- talking here about the Padres and the ChiSox -- were the same two who tried going from zero to sixty in the shortest time possible a couple of years back via FA picks and deals for "name" players.
  4. Another LHP, Adrian Almeda, goes to the Angels in the 2nd round of the AAA phase ... and that's it. The Rule 5 Draft has left the building!
  5. Survived the 1st round of Rule 5 unscathed. Two more rounds to go plus the AAA phase of the draft - although most of those picks will be 'Pass'. They've phased out the AA phase. (4 of the first 10 picks = Yanquis)

(5 yrs/$86M, with limited no-trade... and, because he was traded in-season, no loss of qualifying-offer first-rounder). Pretty good set of transactions for the Yanx overall. - trade shit [crossout]pro[/crossout]suspects to get him on account of his imminent suspension - pay him for about 1/3 of a season under his original contract - trade him away at the deadline for lots of good prospects - get him back at the cost of nothing except money because you had traded him away previously Of course there was the small matter of the deal that sent him away signaling to their fans that they were throwing in the towel on a season where a playoff spot was still very much in reach, and now the question of whether a closer can be worth $17+ mil/year or that he won't blow up (physically or otherwise) during the next five seasons.
  7. Certainly a cheaper and longer-term alternative to McCutcheon as Eaton is signed thru 2019 with reasonable options for '20 + '21 He'll be their CF moving Turner back to SS Giolito's a big price to pay, Reynaldo Lopez being included takes one of their in-house bullpen options out of play, and while the third process Dunning is a ways away but was their 1st round draft pick in 2016 - but ya gotta give to get.
  8. One under the radar note from this week's winter meetings is the revelation that all future HoF ballots will be made public.
  9. Edgy MD wrote: Also, with regard to Ian Desmond, player movement that fills a(n alleged) need in one place can open up a new need elsewhere. So now Texas is down an outfielder, with relief pitching to trade. And as if on cue, reports are out there that the Mets & Rangers have been seen chatting earlier today. No specifics beyond that.
  10. re: Desmond: 1st base?!?!! That's weird. His bat played real well when he was a SS (except for 2015) and again last year as a CF, but his 30 y/o numbers were, at best, so-so for a 1B and I certainly wouldn't want to be locked into them for his age 31-35 seasons. Now it's Denver, Colorado so he'll hit well enough for sure, but there are a glut of 1B-men out there right now (hence the plunging market for Encarnacion) which makes this even stranger. The Wade Davis from KC to the Cubs in exchange for Jorge Soler is apparently complete.

Damn, that Desmond signing is going to cost the Rockies not just a draft pick but the most costly draft pick you can surrender under the current rules, #11 overall !!
  12. The late Bill King, long-time broadcaster of Oakland A's games (and Raiders football and Warriors basketball) is this year's Ford C. Frick award winner.

  14. Carlos Gomez (mentioned briefly somewhere around here as a NYM possibility) winds up with a one-year deal back with the Rangers which is where he finished out the final six weeks of 2016 following his release by the Astros. For whatever reason he was much better in northern Texas than he was in the eastern part of the state.
  15. BA's Q & A on the heels of their NYM Top-10 list.
  16. I think I have Brachitis.
  17. The BoSox capped their Thornburg/Sale afternoon by signing Mitch Moreland to a one year deal. Moreland, who won two Gold Gloves as a 1B with the Rangers, will apparently play there full-time in Boston moving former [crossout]SS[/crossout], [crossout]3B[/crossout], [crossout]LF[/crossout], [crossout]1B[/crossout] Hanley Ramirez to the Papi-replacing DH slot.
  18. Hmmmmm, I would have thought that a logical move had they landed Sale but curious otherwise as it leaves the Nats w/o a LH starter: Scherzer, Strasburg, Roark, Ross and presumably Giolito
  19. Sale to the BoSox!!! sez Kenny Rosenthal
  20. Lefty Specialist wrote: Doing that will make it hard for them to acquire McCutchen, I would think, because I think one or both of them was in any Pittsburgh deal. Oh I'm sure it's certainly a case of either/or for the Nats. Curious, what would you guys reckon is a hypothetical NYM equivalent to Giolito/Robles/lesser stuff? You are encouraged to include TEBOW if deemed necessary. Matz + Rosario?? .. although both are more established/further along as compared to Giolito/Robles.
  21. Giolito plus OF prospect Victor Robles (probably a top-30 overall prospect) and then some lesser stuff on top of that. Or at least them's the rumors.
  22. In RH set-up reliever news, the Boston Red Sox traded their starting 3B-man Travis Shaw plus two prospects to the Brewers for Tyler Thornburg Thornburg, just turned 28 and with three seasons of team control remaining, is coming off a very good season of 2.15 ERA and a sub-1.00 WHiP [0.94] including 13 saves over 64 appearances -- but that also brings his grand total of good ML seasons to one as his combined seasons and partial seasons of 2012-15 were a respectable, though hardly outstanding, 3.18 ERA / 1.30 WHiP Shaw, 27 in April, burst into the BoSox 3B job in mid-2015 when Pablo Sandoval crashed and burned although then crashed himself during the second half of 2016. One of the prospects, 22 y/o SS Mauricio Dubon, is ranked 7th among Boston prospects by BA
  23. Is Papelbon blacklisted No, just annoying and lousy.
  24. Brach's most three seasons' worth of stats: 179 appearances (all in relief); 22-8; 2.61 ERA; 221 IP / 162 Hits; 235 K / 88 BB Rate stats: 6.6 H/9; 3.4 BB/9; 0.8 HR/9; 1.13 WHiP Walks are a tad high but everything else in there is nice. LHBs hit better against him but no severe L/R splits: 688 OPS-Against vs 622. Looks like he 'found' whatever it is that makes him effective right as he left SD for Balt in 2014 as those seasons were a significant step up from his three partial years out west where being a 42nd round draft pick probably didn't earn him a lot of time or patience to straighten himself out. As mentioned above, from Freehold NJ by way of Monmouth U., he'll turn 31 in April and comes with two seasons of team control.
  25. Well the Nats are going to need some kind of closer so it's not strictly an either/or thing of Sale [u:2383w8yh]Or[/u:2383w8yh] a guy for the back end of the pen.
