  1. Utley out-lasted Jimmy Rollins, and Jayson Werth, and Ryan Howard, and Shane Victorino, and Carlos Ruiz, and both cliff Lee and Roy Halladay (quite literally in that case). From that group, only Halladay is (was) older than Utley. The others were the same age or younger. Victorino, just the other day, did the one-day contract thing so officially retired 'as a Phillie'. I always thought that to be rather silly (seemed to have started in the NFL) but especially so in this case as Shane hasn't played since 2015
  2. Four hard-hit ones off of Gsellman -- that inning could have been a whole lot worse. One run since the 1st, no runs since the second. That, and bad bullpenning, is how you jump out to 3-run leads in the 1st inning 3 times and not win any of those. Gotta get through one more frame not to make this the fourth such disaster.
  3. We're going to get burned by this leadoff runner on thing before too long.
  4. Now THAT's an ominous stat: the one about the Mets scoring three or more runs in the 1st inning this season three times prior to tonight ... and then losing the game all three times! But now it's four and the Ro-ark is taking on water.
  5. 4 hits!?!?!! Isn't that like our quota for nine?
  6. If Friday the 13th were to be the source of bad luck coming down on the Mets, how would fans know?

  8. The call overturned vs the one not overturned. Coin must have come up heads once and tails the other because there was certainly not definitive either time.
  9. Thanks to some less than great defense, the Mets already have 3 total bases. But that was a HUGE fucking overturn (if such a thing can exist in a 1st inning) especially for a play which wasn't anything close to fitting the definition of "definitive".
  10. Well, this game was fun while it lasted. The odds of this offense getting three total bases vs Scherzer are low enough so the odds of three runs are virtually infinitesimal.
  11. Seemingly nothing out of the ordinary after a HR during a high scoring game at Coors Field involving DBacks' 3B Daniel Descalso and Rox hurler German Marquez ... except that it was Marquez who HR'd off of Descalso. The Rox were getting blown out in a game that would eventually end 19-2, so they went to the alternate bullpen plan early bringing in utility man Descalso [u:3ah0dj3p]in the 5th[/u:3ah0dj3p] for what turned out to be 2-2/3 innings (3 ER on 4 hits) before he gave way to catcher Alex Avila for the final 2 frames (2 scoreless, 1-hit innings) It was Marquez's first ML HR and the first pitcher-off-position player HR since 1986
  12. When Bartolo faced Boston last (Wed) night, he did so having thrown more ABs against the current Red Sox mgr/coaching staff (63) more often than the night's lineup (62). Alex Cora (19 ABs), 3B coach Carlos Fables (13), 1B coach Tom Goodwin (24), and former catcher Ramon Vazquez (7) had all faced Big Bart during their playing careers. Most of the lineup probably had to hear about him from their grandfathers.

  15. Martin takes ground balls at SS almost daily and was finally able to talk his way into the starting lineup there for one game this year.
  16. Fun fact of the day: The Toronto Blue Jays have started seven different Shortstops this season who hail from six different countries, and none of the six are the US of A Aledmys Diaz and Lourdes Gurriel - Cuba Gift Ngoepe - South Africa Yangervis Solarte - Venezuela Gio Urshela - Colombia Richard Urena - Dominican Republic Russell Martin - Canada
  17. Aaron Nola is hoping he can keep up with Corey Oswalt tonight.

  19. The last one of these occurred we had expired the day after I went to the DL. Not particularly surprised that no one else took up the assignment as I'm mostly just talking to myself with these, but if I was to give up talking to myself around here about 80% of my posts would be eliminated. -- Always nice to see the Yanx, who are playing a DH at the same time as the Mets, lose not just a game but one after jumping out to a 3-0 lead to the putrid Orioles. The O's (and the Royals too) are staying just above the .250 mark, aka: the '62 Mets level. And once they 'empty out' their rosters, who knows how low either/or of those teams could sink. -- Yasiel Puig to the DL which, considering how jammed up the NL West is, could be a big deal. Only 3.5 games currently separates all the teams not named Padres
  20. It was while Oswalt was in NO,LA that he aggressively defended Castro's Cuba even getting radio interviews out of it. He later moved to Dallas. Oh wait.
  21. Jesus Sucre sounds like one of those phrases I wasn't allowed to say when I was a kid. New Tracking Poll: -- TBR 2nd Deck HRs vs NYM hits that have made their OF'ers back up (3-0)
  22. Other polls to track during the game: -- hits by TB pitchers (1) vs hits allowed by TB pitchers (0) -- walks allowed by NYM pitchers (7) vs balls thrown by TBR pitchers (15)
  23. The poll for the day concerns TBR XBHs vs NYM balls hit out of the infield So far it's 3-0 in favor of TB (two 2Bs & 1 HR) as the Mets "offense" so far today consists of 2 GOs, 3 Ks, and a foul pop-out to the catcher.
  24. Bottom 9, 3 run lead -- I give us at least a 20% chance of winning this one.
