  1. =LWFS post_id=34045 time=1585090106 user_id=84] If you're going to lose him for a season, this is the season to lose him. Basically, if they play at all, they're playing 1/2-2/3 of a season. So, practically speaking, you've got 20 starts ...
  2. Carl Everett
  3. And so that basically eats up the remainder of his NYM tenure. He'll be a FA at the end of 2021 and the odds of him actually pitching by the end of 2021 are small. So unless they're big on signing a (then) 29 y/o pitcher coming off both the worst season of his career AND reconstructive ligament surgery, there's a good chance Noah threw his last pitch for the Mets last September.
  4. I think that might be Columbus from back when he was a MFY farmhand.
  5. There's a new book out on the making of CHINATOWN which, according to the review I read, claims that the writer, Robert Towne, originally had a happy (or at least happier ending but that Polanski, not surprisingly a much darker personality given the number of deaths within his own family, insisted on the darker alternate conclusion we all now know: "The girl dies, that's it!" Towne, still alive at 85, was pissed off enough over it to never work with Polanski after that although reportedly much later admitted that, with hindsight, the Polanski-dictated ending was better. But other than that, both flicks had the noir feel, private eyes in a mid-20th century urban setting, powerful insiders getting away with whatever they want while swatting minorities out of the way, and of course questionable parentage involving a main character.

  9. More than a bit of CHINATOWN in it, eh?
  10. Frayed Knot wrote: It could be worse, the BoSox have (supposed) ace Chris Sale missing the early part of the season while he recovers from pneumonia (dude, the old folk's home called and they want their disease back) plus a Taiwanese pitcher who can't attend training camp because he's currently under quarantine to make sure he doesn't have coronavirus! No reports yet of either whooping cough or tuberculosis but I'll keep checking. Chris Sale now needs TJS What a disaster that deal is turning out to be for Boston. Two good seasons to start even though he seemed to wear out by the end/playoffs* in both. And now he's missing 2020 plus a chunk or more of 2021 and then who knows. He'll be 33 by 2022 with three or four seasons (the always popular vesting option) to go at that point at north of $100 million. * 7 playoff starts in 2017-18 but totaled just 25 IP in those and allowed 16 ER
  11. The correct answer is Howe. And if you want to cite a technicality that he didn't really jump to another team in the same league, he wound up lasting so long with Houston & Hartford of the WHA* -- SEVEN seasons following his **Twenty Freakin' Five** with the Red Wings -- that he was with Hartford when they were absorbed into the NHL for his final playing season. So his final total was 25 NHL seasons, then six in the WHA plus one final one in the NHL. And he somehow managed to make it to age 88 * We use to call it WHA Hockey?, as in WHA' Happened?!
  12. Ding and Ding on both Willie & Hank The Orr guess is the right sport but wrong answer. Bobby O had bad knees resulting in his last full season coming at the ripe old age of 26 and he was out of the sport entirely at 30, so not close to 20 seasons for him.
  13. With all sports on hiatus at the moment, I believe Tom Brady is currently the ONLY topic being discussed by sports yakkers so of course even a baseball quiz involves him. Brady, about whom you may have heard is about to join the Tampa Bay Bucs, will become the 4th player in history from among the four American team sports to play: - at least 20 seasons with one team AND win a championship with that team AND win a league MVP w/that team ... and then change teams Two of the other three are baseball players. And then for bonus points you can guess the fourth dude.
  14. Vic Sage wrote: FK, it's interesting (at least to me) that we had the same idea about who to include (with us having identical lists) but different philosophies about how to rank them (at least toward the bottom). We both weighed ABs/IP/G appearances as criteria for inclusion, but once having included a player, i chose to list those who made a net positive contribution in more limited opportunities over players who had a net negative impact in many more opportunities. IOW, once I decided a player should be included on the list of 30, their greater (-) WAR weighed even more heavily against them the more they played. Hadn't realized that we had the same list. I make it a point not to look at other lists until I complete my own. That whole quantity-vs-quality thing has long been the biggest question mark in this project and the one subject to the greatest range of interpretation. I've generally tended to side over the years with the idea that, while it would be nice if the short-term success story had been given more opportunities to shine, the fact is he wasn't and so his contributions were limited. On the flip side, the idea that a replacement type of player being an upgrade on struggling regular is more one on which to judge a GM or a long term strategy of building a team than it is for this project. That Diaz & Familia weren't good in 2019 (and certainly not as good as hoped but we're not supposed to be grading on a curve here) isn't in question. But just their everyday-ness means they also had more than a few good outings as well, something that a September call-up would have trouble matching in only a dozen or so innings. I'm going to review my list before ending this thing next week -- **closing next Wednesday night for anyone who wants to add and change** -- and may change of few things, particularly on those where I differ widely from the general consensus. Or a I may not change anything at all, but I'm open to considering. As things stand now: SEAWOLF is low on Vargas & Panik compared to the consensus, higher than the rest on Familia, Lagares VIC SAGE is low on Diaz, high on Wilson & Nido GWRECK is low on Diaz (no score at all) while having Font higher than most EDGY is low on Avilan (with or w/o the accent) while high on several short-termers: Mazza, Rivera, Santiago CEETAR also left Avilan pointless in favor of the likes of Pounders, Mazza, Rivera GFaFiF likes Brach less than most but R. Davis more so FK is low on both Brach & Guillorme, high on Wilson, Lagares & Familia If anyone does change their list in any way before next week, put those changes into a new list; I won't necessarily see those changes if you just edit the old one.

  17. Will the clubs be training together? -- Probably at some point Are the clubs currently training together? -- Nope. It would be kind of goofy if the seasons open with regular season games played in spring training style ... -- Likely to be some changes (28 man rosters for a time?) but, now that everyone was mostly ramped up it's not like the players are going to use this off time to go back to their off-season job of selling men's suits like in the old days. Pitchers can throw on their own and most everyone has access to a batting cage and/or live arms. Maybe two weeks together starting in early May and it should be no problem.
  18. Officially now no earlier than mid-May From mlb.com On Monday, Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. conducted a conference call with the 30 Clubs of Major League Baseball. Following last night's newly updated recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) restricting events of more than 50 people for the next eight weeks, the opening of the 2020 regular season will be pushed back in accordance with that guidance. MLB will keep fans updated on decisions regarding plans for the 2020 schedule in the days and weeks ahead. The Clubs remain committed to playing as many games as possible when the season begins. We will continue to monitor ongoing events and undertake the precautions and best practices recommended by public health experts, and urge all baseball fans to follow suit. MLB extends its best wishes to all the individuals and communities who have been impacted by the coronavirus.

  20. I was going to close this on (original) opening day, so let's stick to that date anyway. That means any additions, changes, arguments, counter arguments, or lawsuits need to be in as of one week from Wednesday (3/25)
  21. On the pitching side there's no question about who is going to be top dog and little question as to the relievers being behind the starters deGROM - nuff said Wheeler - 1/3 run lower in ERA as compared to Syndergaard in essentially the same # of innings Syndergaard Lugo - a lower WHIP even than JdG Matz - same # of starts as the other starters but 35-45 fewer IP Wilson - a few too many walks and only a half-season of work, otherwise would be higher Vargas Stroman Gsellman Diaz Familia Avilan Seawald - wasn't good but was also unlucky to a ridiculous degree [sub-1.1 WHiP] Avilan Brach - getting some awfully high votes for a guy w/14 IP for the season Font And the lists combined: 30 - deGROM 29 - ALONSO 28 - McNEIL 27 - WHEELER 26 - SYNDERGAARD 25 - CONFORTO 24 - LUGO 23 - JD DAVIS 22 - MATZ 21 - ROSARIO 20 - FRAZIER 19 - WILSON 18 - RAMOS 17 - NIMMO 16 - CANO 15 - VARGAS 14 - STROMAN 13 - DOM SMITH 12 - GSELLMAN 11 - DIAZ 10 - LAGARES 9 - FAMILIA 8 - NIDO 7 - AVILAN 6 - SEAWALD 5 - HECHAVARRIA 4 - BRACH 3 - PANIK 2 - FONT 1 - GUILLORME
  22. Gatherings of 50 or more people should be canceled or postponed for the next eight weeks in order to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, according to new guidance from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “This recommendation is made in an attempt to reduce introduction of the virus into new communities and to slow the spread of infection in communities already affected by the virus,” the agency said. Now this sounds like nothing more than a suggestion at this point and will shirley be subject to review as conditions change. But even if it remains nothing more than a recommendation, it'll be tough for a big and public operation like MLB to just openly say; 'Yeah, we're not listening to you', and eight weeks would put us in the area of mid-May.
  23. NY Post (Sherman*): "The Commissioners Office and Players Association agreed Friday to close all spring training sites and ask players to return home, a joint decision that strongly suggests that MLB's absence will be marked by months not weeks." https://nypost.com/2020/03/13/mlb-shutters-spring-training-among-coronavirus-reactions/https://nypost.com/2020/03/13/mlb-shutters-spring-training-among-coronavirus-reactions/ * Ceetar: "He's a hack"

At least with all the holes in their schedule due to these college conference games canceled, ESPN might finally find some time to speculate as to where Tom Brady will wind up.
