    Well, it was a 2-1/2 hour delay so you're not going to re-start a pitcher after that much down time and already 64 pitches under his belt for the day, particularly not one as valuable as Skenes. The Pirates eventually lost it in the 13th inning after scoring just two runs over four innings of ghost-runner ball. Their final batter, Joey Bart (who should be playing for San Francisco), K'd with the tying run on 3rd and the winning run on 2nd to end the game. The loss dropped them from tied for 1st all the way down to 4th place just 1/2 game out of last ... but that's what happens when all five NLC teams are separated by just 1-1/2 games in the standings.

    The Mets have out-hit the Cubs 21-19 over the first two games of the series while being out-scored 16-4. They're also leading the series in 15-10 in LOB, a figure which doesn't include the seven baserunners they self-erased via 4 GiDP, 2 CS, and once getting caught trying to stretch a single into a double. Just sayin'

    Sometimes it's tough to get a good read on a player, even a good and long lasting one, when he spends (virtually) his whole career one league, two divisions, and three time zones away from us National League guys here on the east coast. And, aside from their WS year in 2002, the Angels post-season history during Garret Anderson's time consisted of just five series [2004, 2005, 2007, 2008] in which they lost four and had a combined W/L record of 5-15. So much for national exposure. What I remember most from him was that he hit doubles by the bushel, He led the league twice (49 & 56) while racking up 522 for his career [50th best]. His biggest flaw that he rarely drew walks so his excellent .293 lifetime BA was part of a comparatively paltry .324 OBA due to a walk rate that was less than half that of an average batter. For the California/Los Angeles/Anaheim/Orange County Angels he holds the career franchise mark for Games played, ABs/PAs, Runs Scored, Hits, Total Bases, Doubles, and XBHs, and is 3rd in career BA behind only Vlad Sr. and Rod Carew.

    He allowed one run on a Walk - Sac Bunt - IW - bloop infield single - K - F9 in his last outing. It was the only run he had allowed this season. Today was his 2nd run/4th hit over 8 appearances/7.2 innings. He also has a 2.23 ERA/0.9 WHIP in 37 games since his return last season. iow, we have bigger worries than him right now.

    Wrong song. 'Waiting for the break of day' is the opening line in the song 25 or 6 to 4 by the band ... wait for it ... CHICAGO! It also alluded to the fact that, following not only three night games but three late ones from the west coast, this series was to consist of three mid-afternoon games. And then it came close to working on a third level as 25 or 6 to 4 looked like a strong possibility for the final score there for a while in Game 1 (the 4 part was correct) until the Cubs stopped trying to tack on more runs out of both boredom and a desire not to miss their dinner reservations.

    Take a picture of the current standings cuz, thanks in part to the first two debacles in Wrigley, the entire NL Central is over .500 right now. And if that isn't enough of an oddity, Cincy & Pitt are leading the way. It's all pretty bunched up so things can change quickly but I'm betting that no one was betting on that at any point in the season.

    Maybe what they need after a few Hollywood Nights is some sunshine in Chi Town and a Saturday in the Park. The last place (NLE) 7-12 Mets take on the last place (NLC) 9-9 Cubs on Friday - Saturday - Sunday with all three games at 2:20 EDT Friday sees Kodai Senga vs Edward Cabrera [3 starts, 16.2 IP, 3 R, 10 H] who had spent his whole career (2021-25) with Miami until an off-season trade back in January. The 28 y/o Righty has good numbers this year although his history isn't as kind. In ten GS vs the Mets over his career Cabrera pitched to a 5.09 ERA w/lots of baserunners, thanks mainly to 33 walks (plus 4 HBP) in just 40.2 innings. Of course that was prior to the Mets adopting their current strategy of going to the plate with a rolled-up and damp copy of Good Housekeeping in their hands in place of traditional wood bats so current mileage may vary.

    Insurmountable Lead Alert: Dodgers have two, Mets runs in the three games don't yet add up to two.

    Yanx have given up 21 runs to the Angels in three games (they have a fourth game Thursday afternoon) but won two of the three with both wins coming by scoring three times in the bottom of the 9th. Tonight it was bases-empty/one out in B-9th when Jazz Chisholm popped up in the IF. But the SS & 3B played I-got-it/you-take-it and it fell untouched. The Angels never got another out. About the only positive thing for LAA is that Trout has homered four times in the three games so maybe the 34 y/o (35 in August) has some juice left in the tank yet ... until the next injury occurs anyway.

    Didn't even come close to making that 9th inning interesting. The Dodgers notched three hits and three walks (plus one IW) but they twice paired a walk and a hit to score a run. The Mets, far too often, do the one baserunner per inning thing (when they're even getting baserunners at all).

    We got get this kid some runs. And he's only at six innings worth of pitches (thru 6-2/3) so no need to yank him yet unless this next out takes a while.

    Let's test this out ... The Mets have now gone 42 straight games without a two run, tie-breaking double. Hmmmm, now quite a fool-proof strategy apparently.
