The Athletic's Will Sammon tweeted over the weekend that Mets owner Steve Cohen said on a broadcast, "We're going to add certain voices to the front office that are going to be helpful." Sammon noted that he "added that it doesn't have to be a GM, could be other ways to support." That makes sense for a team that will wind up around 15 games under .500 and more than 20 games behind the division-leading Atlanta Braves. Presently, David Stearns, 41, runs the show. He serves as the President of Baseball Operations and General Manager. He interned with the Pittsburgh Pirates while working to graduate from Harvard. Since graduating, he has worked with the Mets, MLB Central Office, Cleveland, the Astros. In September of 2015, he became the Brewers general at just 30 years old. He finished second in MLB Executive of the Year voting in 2018 and that offseason, he added the President of Baseball Operations to his GM duties. He stepped down from baseball operations for Milwaukee after the 2022 season to take an advisory role with ownership. But all along, it seemed quite clear what was happening. It was just a matter of time before we would join the New York Mets. Steve Cohen had reached out to the Brewers a few times but were told no. When Stearns' Brewers contract came to an end, the Mets hired him the next day. In other words, as much as many Mets fans wish the opposite, especially after Pete Alonso came back to Shea this past weekend, Stearns' job is safe. Bringing in help will be very important. While Cohen said it doesn't have to mean a new GM, it could. I would guess it will mean several additions, assistant GMs, advisors, etc. One name that has surfaced is former Twins President of Baseball Operations, Derek Falvey. Michael Marino, a national baseball writer tweeted that the "Mets have identified former Twins President of Baseball Operations Derek Falvey as someone of interest as they look to expand their front office." When Derek Falvey, 43, left the Minnesota Twins organization in late January, there was no question that he would have plenty of opportunities in his future to be a team's GM or President of Baseball Operations, as he was with the Twins. It likely would be more about when he wanted to get back into the grind. After the 2011 season, he was promoted to co-director of baseball operations, a title her shared with none other than David Stearns. Falvey joined the Twins in October 2016. He was hired as an executive vice president and chief baseball officer. In 2024, he was named president of baseball operations and also took on business operations too. Falvey certain had mixed success with the Twins. His first year was all about observing the current state of the Twins organization as a whole. He really started implementing changes after the first season. They were able to put together a strong analytics department, they encouraged more collaboration between groups (such as amateur scouts and player development, etc.), they started using the most advanced technology available. The focus at first was about spending on infrastructure. Frankly, when Twins ownership allowed him to spend, Falvey was able to be very creative. In 2019, they signed Nelson Cruz and the "Bomba Squad" set the MLB record for homers in a season. He signed hundred-million players (Josh Donaldson, Carlos Correa). He and Rocco Baldelli led the Twins to their first playoff series win in 2013 when they swept the Blue Jays. And then Twins ownership told Falvey that he needed to reduce payroll by $30 million the next year, and then more the next year. At the trade deadline in 2025, Falvey traded 10 players. Most Twins fans, if they're being honest, would agree that the trades were all good with the exception of one. Falvey and the Twins "mutually parted ways" at the end of January 2026. SNY's Jim Duquette also tweeted that Royals special assistant Tom McNamara is also under consideration. His career in professional baseball began as a player with 50 games for Low-A Bellingham in the Northwest League. That was the end of his playing career. He immediately transitioned to amateur scouting for the Mariners. He was a crosschecker for the Brewers. He was a professional scout with the Padres. He became the scouting director for the Mariners. And now he has been a Special Assistant to the GM with the Royals. Certainly other names will surface in the coming weeks and months. Some will be legitimate. Some won't. Mets infield prospect Mitch Voit was the 38th overall draft pick in the 2025 draft out of the University of Michigan. He was the highest draft pick out of Michigan in 25 years. Voit grew up near Milwaukee and attended Whitefish Bay High School. The 21-year-old looks to become the second person from his high school to go to the big leagues. The other is Cubs manager Craig Counsell. The Counsell family still lives in Whitefish Bay. His eldest son Brady Counsell was one year ahead of Voit in high school. He went on to the University of Minnesota for three years and then spent a season at Kansas. He was the 10th round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2025. Jack Counsell was a year younger than Voit and when his time at Whitefish Bay came to an end, he followed Voit to Michigan. He spent the 2024 season with the Wolverines and has played the last two Big Ten seasons at Northwestern. Back to Voit, he was a starter for Michigan right away as a freshman. He hit .267/.338/.439 (.777) with nine doubles, a triple, and seven home runs. In addition, he pitched 36 innings over 19 games and was 4-1 with five saves and a 3.25 ERA. The next year, he hit .292/.373/.572 (.945) with 20 doubles, two triples, and 14 home runs. On the mound, he made 10 starts and went 5-3 with a 5.49 ERA over 62 1/3 innings. However, in July of that year, he had elbow surgery which ultimately ended his career as a pitcher. As a junior in 2025, fully focused on hitting, he hit .346/.471/.668 (1.140) with 17 doubles, four triples, and 14 home runs. The Mets liked what they saw enough to make him the 38th overall pick in the June 2025 draft. He ended the season with 22 games for St. Lucie. He began the 2026 season with 76 games in Brooklyn. He hit .242/.349/.396 (.745) with 12 doubles and 11 home runs. He also had 36 steals. In late July, he moved up to Double-A Binghampton and really took off as a prospect. In 29 games, he hit .347/.430/.517 (.947) with 12 doubles, a triple, two homers and nine stolen bases. He had multiple hits in 11 of those 29 games including five of his first eight games. In that eighth game, he went 5-for-6 and was hitting .594/.658/.969 (1.627) with seven doubles, a triple, and a home run. He had six walks and four strikeouts. He was also 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts. The Mets and prospect ranking sites were really liking what they have seeing of Voit as well. Here at Grand Central Mets, he jumped up to the team's #4 ranked prospect. Others noticed Voit too and liked what they saw. I know that his AA numbers were eyepopping, but we have box scores. We know they're real, even if some could argue that they were A.I. or something. Add TMZ to the list who have researched the topic. Organizations are signing more and more players from independent leagues, many in-season. I thought I'd start this forum thread for other minor league signings throughout the season. According to the Hagerstown Flying Boxcars, RHP Jack Weisenburger has signed a minor-league deal with the Mets. The 28-year-old was the 20th round pick of the A's back in 2019 out of the University of Michigan. He remained in that organization through the 2024 season and reached AA. He has been used mostly as a reliever in affiliated ball. In 2025, he pitched for Hagerstown and went 1-11 with a 5.66 ERA. He made 32 appearances, 15 starts. In 103 1/3 innings, he walked 54 and struck out 106 batters. He played in Mexico this winter. He has not pitched for Hagerstown yet in 2026. I assume he's a depth piece to eat innings at Double-A.
