  1. So the bottom 5th was another one of those deals where, w/2 outs, the pitching coach comes out to talk to his pitcher in trouble (walk- HR - walk). Two pitches later he gives up a hard single at which point the game is delayed as they come to remove the pitcher this time. The reliever then retires the batter on five pitches and we're back in another break. iow, probably around 7 or 8 minutes to see about the same number of pitches. When I'm running this sport, pitching coaches are banned from the field. Or, if they do come out to "settle down" their pitcher but he fails to retire the next hitter, he gets a week's suspension ... or maybe an on-field tasing, I haven't decided yet.
  2. Call it 'Yapping with Substance' as opposed to yapping for the sake of yapping which it what seems to be standard operating procedure in sports telecasts these days.
  3. If the LAD reliever doesn't snag that liner (and, let's face, that liner caught him) and turn it into a DP, that could have been a very different game in the late innings. I like Smoltz. I mean, sure he talks a lot, but so would anyone in that slot because network bosses abhor what they consider to be dead air (aka: no one talking). Not that I agree with that philosophy -- see the hockey/Mike Emerick thread-- but at least Smoltz isn't just spewing empty calories into the mic when he's filling the space ... although, as always, your mileage may vary.
  4. GAME 1 Considering how much TBR both touts and relies on its bullpen, I'm surprised they stuck with Glasnow as long as they did after it took him nearly 8 innings worth of pitches just to get through 4-1/3
  5. A Boy Named Seo wrote: I love Kerhshaw and Betts. Gentlemen and superstars. I'm all the way pulling for em. I would like to see Kershaw fare well and get at least partially out from under the 'playoff choker' label.
  6. I had pre-decided to pull for the Rays against either NL winner, or for either NL winner if it were against the Astros
  7. Cody Bellinger is "likely to play" in Game 1 of the WS despite popping out his shoulder during the celebration following his eventual game-winning HR in Game 7 of the NLCS
  8. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Braves will stew all winter on that dumbass baserunning Yeah, what a clusterfuck that was. Prior to seeing that I would have thought it was damn near impossible to go from a 2nd & 3rd/no-out situation to two outs and a runner only on 1st with no runs scoring. On the other hand, Turner just barely scraped Swanson's heel with that tag; if he misses that then they might not have gotten anyone there and they'd be the ones contemplating how they fucked it up.
  9. I've seen boat anchors smaller than that '13' necklace Acuna wears.
  10. Two hours = 4 innings. The culprit here has been a massive amount of pitches thrown by most of the (five) pitchers used thus far. Ian Anderson (ATL) - 73 pitches thru 3 innings Tyler Matzek - 27 to get thru 1 Dustin May (LAD) - 17 thru 1 Tony Gonsolin - 41 thru 2 Blake Treinen - 14 thru 1 3-2 Braves, top 5
  11. Whoever this replacement announcer is, he looks young enough to be Joe Buck's kid. Maybe he IS a third generation Buck, Skippy Buck
  12. Game 7 tonight at 8:15 Eastern, with Some Guy stepping in for Joe Buck (it's only Game 7, it's not as important as any NFL game) and John "I know everything and I'm going to tell it all to you" Smoltz on FOX. FOX is also running the game on FS1 in case the football game (and mandatory post-game mico-analysis) isn't quite over by 8:00 .. cuz, y'know, football games have more than their fair share of dead time too.
  13. How do I put this nicely about Dustin May? Let's just say that I don't expect him to be the next contestant on 'The Bachelor' or any of those other dating type shows.
  14. =bmfc1 post_id=48702 time=1603050461 user_id=73] True. They add :30 seconds of commercial time between innings ...
  15. Which, when you consider that the extra commercial times during post-season games add some 16-18 minutes over what it would normally run,, so both were the equivalent of 3 hours ... which sounds kind of good these days. Except that the games were 3-1 and 4-2, and both were only 8-1/2 innings, and that there were just a few in-inning pitching changes. Those are the type of games that used to run more like 2-1/2 hours or even less, so they've taken the same amount of action and just made them 45 to 50 minutes longer.
  16. So despite all the wackiness of this season and the playoffs-on-steroids experiment (at least I hope it's an experiment), this year's WS is going to wind up with no Wild Cards only division winners and will feature the best record in the AL matched up against either the best (LAD) or 3rd best (ATL) from the NL (SDP was 2nd). Houston winning the ALCS would have produced a first ever sub-.500 WS team, something that likely would have given ammo to both sides of the debate over expanded playoffs. - 'Stop watering down the playoffs ... lousy teams don't deserve to be there!' vs 'Hey this is great, your team can suck most of the year and still go all the way if they get hot at the right time ... so every game counts!!!'
  17. TB Rays baseball: Charlie Morton has a two-hit shutout going on only 66 pitches thru 5-2/3 ... and he's pulled for a reliever with runners on 1st and 3rd Out of the inning but they've still got three more innings to cover 3-1 TBR, heading for bottom 6th
  18. Kenley Jansen with the six-pitch/three-out save ... and so we'll see you in game seven.
  19. [referencing the time of game discussion from the AL thread] ... the gap between the manager signaling for a pitching change (first in-inning swap of this game) and the first pitch to the next batter: three minutes. That's half again as long as a mid-inning break in a reg season game. Knock out the extra warm-ups that come on top of the actual warm-ups and you could easily cut that gap in half. 3-1 Dodgers, end of seven. Game approx 2:45 long right now.
  20. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=48666 time=1602954073 user_id=68] Sometimes, I think that the main reason for today's length of game is batters and pitchers taking too long in between pitches. Just watch an old game from the 70s if you're able to. The pitcher pitches. The catcher catches the pitch and throws it back to the pitcher. And in about 10 seconds, the next pitch is delivered. I'm sure it's 30 or 40 seconds between pitches today. And that's with nobody on base.
  21. GAME 6 Max Fried is getting fried in the bottom of the 1st (as usual, I'm watching via a slight delay so I can FF through the dead spots). 3 runs including 2 solo HRs (Seager & Turner) and he's not out of the inning yet. (now he is)
  22. I honesty thought they had waived the mound visit rule, either for this season or at least for the post-season, based on how many committee meetings I was seeing in the middle of the field. But with so many pitching changes and so many exemptions (pinch-hitters for instance -- Whoa, we knew Lopez was on their roster but we didn't know they were going to USE him) there have been all night parades out to the mound without ever breaching the limits. And a bunch of these pitching changes have come with two outs (a work-around for the three-batter rule) followed by a quick third out which of course leads to a new break. So that's a mound meeting/pitching change [2-1/2 - 3 minutes]; then 3 or 4 pitches [1-plus]; then the between inning break [3 plus] ... iow, maybe six to seven minutes of clock time to witness three pitches!! That's not a sustainable business model.

  24. Also not convinced that Kershaw was left in too long. As the 6th started he had allowed 1 run on 4 hits. Acuna led off with an infield chop single ... and then came the two consecutive doubles which ended his night. When was the 'right' time to pull him? -- before the inning started? -- after the first double? -- surely not after the lucky chopper And when you consider that the parade of relievers after him pretty much just threw more gas on the fire, one could almost make the case that they'd have been better off taking their chances with leaving him in. If LAD wants to get rid of Robert's for the cumulative failures of the past half-dozen post-seasons that's one thing, but certainly not on last night alone.
  25. Except that Realmuto wasn't a FA two years ago. It was a trade that moved him from Miami to Philly. Bauer, a guy who has more than his share of detractors, was college teammates (UCLA) with, but didn't get along with, Gerrit Cole ... so that could make for an interesting rivalry.
