    Last pitcher to shut out the Yanx 1 - 0 in the 'post-season'? ... Don F. Drysdale in 1963. The 'Twin D' (as Howard Cosell used to call him) shut out was (not surprisingly) a CG as he out-dueled Jim Bouton. Don't want to say it's been a while but Drysdale's been dead for 33 years.

    After games like this I think back to all the non-baseball fans I've heard over the years who insist that low scoring baseball games are boring. They think it's boring because they think 7 - 0 (or 3 - 0) football games are boring.

    Rays are 8th in MLB in OPS and 12 in RS/G, both above average obviously but also not like they couldn't use an improvement in CF. I mean, it's not so much that he's on a team so much as it's that he started 3/4 of the time on a good club, played a CG in most of those and was switched into a game late in another 15, amassing 500+ PAs for the season.

    Yeah, it's not like Mullins 'found it' since leaving the Mets: .205/.284/.344 // 628 in 2026 And you can partially get away with that kind of line (the slug rate is decent) if you're also a dominant defensive CF but, even IF he was that at one time, those days are pretty much behind him now.

    The final entry in the four game slate scheduled for Saturday October 3rd will be on not FOX but FS1 at 8:30 EDT (7:30 local) Padres will throw (not literally) lefty Robbie Ray at the Brewers who was a deadline pickup from SFG. The 35 (yesterday) y/o has had some nice seasons in his 13 year career but a 5.02 ERA/1.53 WHIP in his 9 games since the trade to Sandy Eggo Brewers counter with 'Les Mis', aka: Jacob Misiorowki and his consistent 100+ heat, his likely CY award, and his 1.80 ERA which is just a statistical rounding error from being half what Ray is sporting (3.59) this season. Regular season: Brewers (103 wins) 2 - Padres (91) 4

    Game 1 tees off on Saturday 10/3 at 6:30 EDT on TBS Certainly now a bad year for the recently-turned 36 y/o Gerritt Cole -- 22 starts, 3.61 ERA, 1.10 WHIP coming off UCL surgery which killed all of 2025 and the early part of '26 for him even if below his last full season in '24 when he won the AL CY -- so he'll toe the slab for NYY Rays counter with 31 y/o righty Drew Rasmussen who's now turned in back-to-back terrific seasons for TBR including leading the AL this year in both WHIP (0.913) and K/BB ratio (5.44) with 174 to 32 over 30 starts/172 IP Regular season record: TBR (98 wins) 7 -- NYY (93) 6

    Little rest for the (sort of) weary as the Braves jet it to the left coast to start their next round less than 48 hours after needing three consecutive games to dispose of the Phillies. Game 1 - Saturday 4PM EDT (1 PM local time), FOX The Braves will throw the always popular TBD to kick things off while the Dodgers counter with newcomer Tarik Skubal Regular season: LAD (100 wins) 1 -- 5 vs Braves (94)

    Saturday 10/3 [1 PM EDT on TBS] in a best-of-five to determine the best of the weak half of the AL bracket. For the White Sox, Hagen Smith -- a 22 y/o (LH) rookie with 18 G / 1 start under his belt -- gets the game one start. Somebody to follow quickly afterward most likely. vs Parker Messick, also a lefty, for the Guardians -- a 25 y/o statistical rookie (7 games in '25) and serious RoY candidate [32 GS, 186 IP, 2.56 ERA, 1.06 WHIP] Cleveland spends 162 games proving that they were (one game) better than the White Sox ... and now they get to do it all over again in a three-of-five matchup. Regular season: CLE (85 wins) 6 -- CHW 7 (84)

    Plus the 6, 7, 8, and 9 PM start times you suggest would require not two but four different channels so multiple networks with at least two options each. In this case that would mean no NBC exclusive for Round 1. I agree that they could stick the starting times closer together to where there's a bit of overlap from Game 1 to 2, and then from 2 to 3 etc. But they're also trying to keep the late-afternoon/early evening time unclogged as possible since national, and particularly local, news programs are solid money making slots for affiliates. That's why the early afternoon game was on the network but the 5 PM slot was Peacock only. Meanwhile, with the Padres also winning last night, that's now 14 series out of 20 best-of-three series that were two game sweeps and either 18 or 19 of the 20 where the winner of game one went on to win the series depending on the outcome of today's Braves/Phillies.

    But the networks are going to lose viewers from the overlap. They're the ones who don't want it and they're not going to pay MLB as much if they insist on structuring things that way. From a fan p.o.v., sure I'll watch my team to the exclusion of others. But that doesn't mean I don't want to watch one or more other games as well and it's tough to do that if the starting times are so close together. Bottom line is: with a potential 12 games in three days with this current opening round format, somebody's going to be upset no matter what you do. I remember many years ago, back when WC rounds were semi-new (so '90s some time), Francesa throwing an on-the-air fit over early playoff games even partially overlapping. 'Baseball is so stupid, he ranted, you wouldn't see the NFL doing things this way!!!' Yes, Mike, the NFL is so fucking brilliant that they somehow managed to figure out a way to schedule 11 playoff games over a five week span without having two or more conflict. Such genius in that league you wonder why MLB can't learn from it.

    It's like Boston's entire season was that 32 - 5 stretch from June 25 thru August 7th Prior to that they were 32 - 46 and they went 23 - 24 after that point [55 - 70]. And that before & after team is the one they've been looking like these last two days.

    At least we've advanced from the day when coaches and announcers (particularly in football) used to say, 'It's not an injury, it's just a concussion'. And then there was the always popular, 'Oh he just got his bell rung'. In fairness, we didn't know as much then as we do now (and those who did know tended to keep their mouths shut). Now of course we know that a concussion IS an injury, it's a brain injury and at least they're taking them more seriously as compared to back in the day.

    Not content with a three man booth, networks now routinely go to three-man, and now they've set up a permanent guy on the sidelines so it's essentially a four man booth even if one of them isn't physically in the booth. So you've got the p-b-p man, Joe Girardi, Lou Merloni, plus Anthony Rizzo somewhere in the expensive seats. I almost always prefer just a two-man team but TV never subscribes to the less-is-more theory. Their mantra is too often, bigger-is-better, and really big is better still.

    They certainly don't want too much overlap with each game robbing/being robbed of eyeballs from the game just before and just after it. Anyway, ChiSox take care of business in two games. It only belatedly occurred to me that this matchup is a replay of the 2005 World Series. So Houston still hasn't won a playoff game vs CHW

    'And we'll see you in Game Three' OK, so that doesn't have quite the ring as Jack Buck's call back in '91, but no sweep in this series anyway. Game ended on a K/ABS challenge with two on. Realmuto had about an 80% successful challenge rate over the season and this one justnipped the zone. Francisco Alvarez, of course, would have run out of challenges six innings earlier.
