  1. The Smoltz stuff started because Smoltz himself let on publicly that - if the Braves decide it would be in their best interests to move him - he could be agreeable for the right deal rather than use his veto power over any deal. So Glavine apparently went running to NYM mgmt urging for such a deal. Newsday had something on this today - while also saying how it almost certainly won't happen. IOW, this is not totally a M&MD-invented concept, but it's also not something on the front burner. I have no idea what Atlanta would want in his return - but we can be sure it would be a shitload.
  2. OK, I've had these old stats kicking around that you can use as a Benitez/Wagner comparison. It's from the period that included Benitez's NYM days ('99-'02) although does NOT include his final half-season of '03 - which was actually his worst stretch. IPsSv/OppSvPctBAAWHiPK/9ERASlgAW-LBenitez297.3139/15788.5%.1751.1012.292.63.33515 - 11Wagner240119/13785.6%.1861.0011.962.70.33112 - 12 As I've said many times before, Benitez and Wagner were virtual statistical twins during that stretch. Of course many Met fans were under the impression that ALL closers were better than Benitez and so any one would represent an upgrade - but we all know how much the 'Grass-is-Greener' theorem pervails.
  3. On Wright's double in the middle of the game. Delgado ran from 1st to 2nd like he expected it either to be caught or go out. By the time he started really running it was too late to send him. A question about it will likely produce the same "it didn't come up" response as your earlier one. Wasn't the biggest story, etc. Eddie C asked Willie about it on the FAN pre-game show. More like; 'Did you think Delgado would score there?' He said he thought initially that he could score but that he clearly wasn't far enough along by the time the ball got back into the IF. Sounds like he either didn't think Delgado was loafing or just didn't see it.
  4. Double-Digit Game Lead in the East!!
  5. ]Was there any resolution to the question of why Valentin chose to hit left-handed in that spot? Hammond is a change-up specialist. He wouldn't be the first guy to prefer to bat from the same side against it. I remember guys batting that way against Franco and also Dusty Baker specifically sending up LH batters to face him.
  6. ]he was just standing there with his hands on his knees every pitch. He was like that before every pitch - but then got into "running position" as the pitcher went into the stretch.
  7. ]A sidebar of this series is early favoritism for Manager of the Year, tho looks so far like Narron's get the edge there Maybe, but I can't believe he took Dunn out so early. I know he's a rotten fielder and all but I thought he was doing us a huge favor. Turned out that his spot came up in the 9th and the Reds were w/o their best power/OBA guy with runners on 1st & 2nd/2-outs. Aurelia PHed and got the squib hit to 3rd.
  8. Fuck the cycle, I don't want to hear about that right now.
  9. Oh, and add Valentin's ill-advised scramble in the 2nd inning to the laundry list of outs given away. What's he trying to do, get thrown out for the cycle this week?
  10. We gave that one away in a bunch of different ways - in addition to the obvious one. - too many LOBs (duh!) - they took extra bases on us (is Beltran EVER planning on hitting a cut-off man?) + many LoDuca passed balls - and we took very few on them: Delgado c/should have scored on Wright's 2B, Reyes getting caught off on the liner (where ya goin dude? you got Franco in front of you!) And yeah, I woulda sent Beltran running at some point also.
  11. Sure the numbers will vary. Those particular figures were MLB avgs for '99-'02 and you could make the argument that with Reyes on 2nd and Beltran/Delgado/Wright coming up that the pcts would be higher across the board. The main point, as you mention, is that it's the 1st inning, not a late-game situation where the addition of 1 run can tilt the odds of winning the game dramatically in your favor. I'm not arguing for a 'never-bunt-ever' strategy.
  12. - because 1st base is always the toughest competition - because he played mostly in Canada - and because voting is a flawed process I got around to voting last night. It won't make a bit of difference (I have no patience to sit there and vote the max 25 times you're allowed) but I just wanted to strike a blow for those having good years but are getting ignored for various reasons and are getting their asses kicked by often less-deserving MFYs & BoSoxers, AL: 1B - Hafner 2B - Loretta SS - Tejada 3B - Glaus OF: Sizemore, Wells, Rios (had to write him in!!) C: Mauer NL: 1B - Pujols (if he's still injured then someone else takes it) 2B - Utley SS - Renterea 3B - Wright OF Beltran, Bay, Holliday C - McCann
  13. ]far more important that he put his team in a position to end that inning up 1–0, as opposed to taking a chance at a rally… Except that the problem is a bunt only barely accomplishes that. MLB avgs show that a team getting a runner to 2nd w/0 outs goes scoreless in that inning 36.8% of the time. Get him to 3rd with 1 out (successful bunt) and that number drops, but only to 33.8% Meanwhile, the drawback is that while you're (slightly) increasing the odds of scoring 1 run, at the same time you're also increasing the odds of scoring only 1 run - and doing so by a bigger margin. Having an inning of 2 or more runs there drops from 28.3% down to 18.3% Maybe a big - or even semi-big - inning there is what we needed to get past Arroyo and playing conservatively with a our speedy lead-off on 2nd blew the best shot we had at getting that.
  14. Sure there is, it's right next to Bridgehampton, Westhampton, Southampton, Hampton Bays & East Hampton
  15. In contrast to the always-under-control Steve Trachsel who claims he was telling himself to calm down and not to take that feeling to the mound with him by the time he was rounding 2nd base on his trot.
  16. More MacLane: 'Southpaw Evan MacLane suffered his first Triple-A loss in seven decisions Thursday. The soft-tosser is a combined 9-2 between Binghamton and Norfolk this season. He has a career .714 win percentage (35-14)' also 'Lefty reliever Royce Ring extended his scoreless innings streak to 19 Thursday. Ring has taken over the closing role with Heath Bell’s promotion to the big leagues. His fourth save came Tuesday in 1-0 win against Pawtucket and ex-Met Matt Ginter' -- Adam Rubin
  17. I look at it this way: While I'm watching I'm hoping that the Yanx look bad; that they lose a Mussina-started game right on the heels of losing a Unit-started game; that a 1st-baseman they have no hopes of landing for at least 5 years makes them his bitch while Steinbrenner berates his people for "allowing him" to play elsewhere; that Mariano blows the game after pitching two innings which also blows his availability for the next game. And then if it doesn't happen ... well I can still justify that it's OK because it helps us. Either way; I WIN!!!!
  18. June 20 vs Akron: 7 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 3 BB, 6 K (W) 3-1, 2.48 From Adam Rubin's Met blog: A scout who watched 2005 first-round pick Pelfrey suggested that while the righthander’s fastball matches up favorably with big leaguers, his slider and changeup need work.
  19. Yanx tied it up at 7 then went ahead 9-7. So then Ryan Howard has a chance to turn a monster night into a FREAKIN MONSTER night comes up with 2-on & 2-out as the winning run ... and grounds out to end the game.
  20. Trachsel - 3.0 Reyes - 0.8 Nady - 1.8 Delgado - 1.1 Sanchez - 1.0 Valentin - 0.7 LoDuca - 1.6
  21. And if you want someone to blame for the Yanx "falling apart" once they come up against our division, look no further than Ryan Howard for tonight. - A 3R HR breaks a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 1st - Then, after the Yanx had tied it 3-3, he hit a 2R bomb (both off Mussina) - The Yanx then caught up and tied the game a 5 when Howard stroked a 2-out/2-RBI triple off lefty specialist Mike Myers who was, of course, brought in just to face him. Heading for the 8th inning it's 7-5 Phils - and Ryan Howard has all 7 RBIs
  22. Who bats second? - I don't really care. Castro's too slow obviously but almost anyone else can match LoDuca's speed and OBA. Plus, we've managed to find someone for the (25% of so) games that Castro's caught this year and the lineup certainly doesn't fall apart. The notion of 'moving runners along' is nice but somewhat over-rated - even for #2 hitters. 2/3rds of the time (the pct Reyes does NOT get on) there's no one to move up anyway and, even when there are, I'd rather have hits as opposed to trading outs for a runner advancement in most situations. And besides, all I'm really talking about here is moving those Castro starts from the 20-25% realm into maybe the 35% area. As mentioned, maybe it would also help stem the LoDuca 2nd-half fades that he's had over the years.
  23. ]I can't believe what I'm hearing here. I hate the MFY's as much as anyone else, but rooting for them to lose is a far, far distant second to me rooting for the Mets to make the playoffs. I'm just genetically pre-disposed to root against the Yanx - I just can't do it*. And, yes, given the choice of Mets & Yanx winning pennants vs both losing out I'd obviously pick the former over the latter. I guess some of us are just tempting fate by feeling we can win this year even without help for this 3-day period; hence my chicken-shit answer that I'll grant the Phils as many (but not more) wins in this series as we get in ours. * I even tried early in my life to root for both but failed miserably. Nor did I jump on the bandwagon (which a sizeable minority of Met fans did) when the Cone/Straw/Gooden Yanx were breaking through in '96. I still blame those "fans" for causing the MFY late-'90s run.
  24. "And I'm not sure in what way Castro is comparable to LoDuca." More power for one ... despite LoDuke's off-the-wall shot in inning 1 here. Castro can hit a bit (albeit in smaller samples) and is a better thrower than LoDuke (IMO). On edit: cross-posted with Edgy above -- but check out those ISO (isolated slugging) numbers: not quite .100 for LoDuke & nearly .200 for The Dictator.
  25. OHernandez - 3.8 Beltran - 1.5 Reyes - 1.0 Valentin - 1.0 Wagner - 0.5
